The Official Gears of War 2 Catch-all

I had quite a few "wow thats stupid" moments during Gears. There were some things that just weren't explained at all, that made progressing without figuring the "trick" out literally impossible. Things like being able to cool the turrets off faster by pressing RB wasn't explained anywhere until I picked up the mulcher much later in the game, yet it was absolutely necessary to know during the rig sequence.

I missed it entirely. In fact, this is the first I've heard of it. It sounds like useful info. :)

I got through the rig alright without knowing how to cool the guns. That thing can take a lot of those mortar hits.

Yea, that's insanely useful to know, especially in multiplayer.

So... how do you kill people in multiplayer again?

Because emptying a clip on them doesn't seem to work...

God I suck.

Over the weekend, RichyRambo, ShotgunPhil, me, Funkenpants and Darth Lampshade made it through 50 levels of Horde on normal difficulty. It called for great teamwork and communications. We asigned zones and roles to everyone.

I had a freaking great time.

It was or at least the inital time your on a trokia, because I learned about it right away from some prompt in the game but maybe it was random when it appeared.

Reminds me of Hamburger Hill we used to do in Ghost Recon 1 and 2, no?

More lab musings:

In the lab I found a note talking about a female patient. It mentioned something about baldness and joint swelling being symptoms of "her condition." Given that the Locust Queen looks considerably more human than any other Locust, is it possible the the COG created the Queen? Some of the other notes and Nyles' rants mention things like the "future of humanity" which lends weight to the idea that the COG either created the Locust or was working on some sort of Locust-human hybrid (which could explain the queen). I still don't know how to reconcile this with the ancient-looking Locust architecture, or the physical similarities between the Locust and many of the other subterranean critters.

Also, weren't the Berserkers in the first game supposed to be Locust females? This could also point towards the Queen not being pure Locust, unless they're like bees and only one female becomes a Queen and the rest turn into big blind monsters.

...and don't ask me about the Lambent stuff, I have no idea. Especially the scene where one Lambent Locust dies and the immulsion flows out of his corpse into the other nearby Locust - is it alive?

Yeah, depends on what difficulty, of course. On Insane, two mortar hits and you are done.

Played Gears 1 campaign about 20 times. Helped several goodgers finish it out.

I'll probably take you up on that. I started playing some on Insane, and it is just brutal by yourself.

That looks like a lot of fun.

There's your problem right there, you're trying to kill people with the ancillary ballistics attachment of the chainsaw.

It's been fun playing with some of you last night.
I've been very quiet cause i don't understand everything you said and probably cause i'm a little shy to speak in english.
Anyway it's been fun, and heu! Sorry again Danjo to have shot you even if you were in my team

God, even Rabbit pwned me with his stupid chainsaw while I was desperately trying to reconfigure his face with a shotgun.

I think I need a therapy.

OH! Zaro is the little, red, pixel-cowboy. I didn't put two and two together.

A bit less open, but yeah, same kind of teamwork required.

Too many unanswered questions, a non-ending, and more cheesy lines ("ten sh*t-loads!") On the other hand, this one was actually a coherent story progression, unlike Gears 1, and had some really interesting and memorable moments. Huge step up from Gears 1, in terms of narrative, but they could have done with more explanation and an ending with some finality.

Gameplay-wise, final boss was nothing, but beyond that it was fantastic. Graphically mind-blowing. I liked the variety in the gameplay, from light obstacle-coursing (worm), to rail shooting, to classic Gears stuff refined. I loved the tall thin screechers, they were very fun to fight, as were the Grinders and Chargers. Sad that no Berserkers made a return, even once. My favorite weapon was the Shield-and-pistol with the magnum-ish pistol. Great fun.

Also, the box-carrying scene was fantastic! Even though it only lasted about a minute, it put a huge smile on my face and what an interesting idea it was, and how well implemented it was.

Felt like a Ouija board over XBL. "Are you turning it?"

"I'm not turning it! You're turning it!"

With work and other responsibilities I hadn't gotten around to playing much GoW2, I played Act1 on hardcore today. Available gaming hours went into left4dead and fable2, but playing today made me want to play more and soon! Love to play coop and/or horde with you guys. So friend me up! My gamertag is the same as my forumname...

Re machinegun cooling with RB -- seriously, it's near damn impossible to use MGs in multiplayer without cooling.

Re torture and stuff --

if you remember Tai rescue scene -- he had some wicked-looking hooks and loops screwed into his back. The Locusts really hack humans up.

I hoped to see some form of a Locust laboratory in the bowels of the Hollow. I haven't finished the game yet -- defending Jacinto now -- but I think it's fair to expect that there WON'T be such a scene.

I am figuring the following:

The Queen is:

... the test subject known as Ruth, as documented in one of the collectable Journal items. Dr. Niles notes that her nails are growing at a very fast rate even as her hair disappears. My guess is that she evolved into some posthuman form -- a successful Sire experiment. When taken to Mr Kadar she somehow wound up with the Locust, and they accepted her as their queen. She is NOT a Locust, however. She was taken alone with Dr Niles's team even as the Sires were left behind in stasis because he consider her his "child". And now the Queen wants to conquer the surface.

The tortured humans are:

... the Queen's attempt to produce more people like herself. That would explain the whole thing. Maria had patchy hair, and her pale skin was similar to that of the Queen. Dom understands that she's not just tortured -- she's transformed. That's The gruesome plugs on Tai's back made me think of the hoses/tubes attached to Sires' backs. Tai was not "broken" -- he decided to rather blow his head off than not being human anymore. Marcus then says that "he WAS a good MAN".

I like that explanation, Gorilla. That would make a lot of sense.

What I love is how it is absolutely nothing like multiple Science Fiction books and movies, or Starcraft.

Thanks, man

The last piece of the charade remaining is why ....

...flooding the Hollow turned out to be a bad idea (as Adam Fenix radios in after the credits roll). The new screenshots of the new MP maps I saw somewhere feature the Imulsion sloshing around right on Sera's daysurface. It's a safe bet to surmise that the seawater flushed Imulsion out. All kinds of freaky things are now to be expected...

... so perhaps we're going to deal with the Lambent humans in GoW3.

*cough*

Patch is out now.

* Adjustments to make Public matchmaking faster, especially in the single player party and the four player party case. Some of these adjustments should be felt immediately and some will play out over several days as our update enables us to reduce player segmentation by reducing the number of servers required to do matchmaking. This will increase the number of possible matches available for you to join.
* A tweak that should prevent us from losing some of our additional detailed stats data that we gather for gearsofwar.com. Due to the large number of concurrent matches, our stats gathering servers were not able to collect data for every single match played. The Xbox LIVE leaderboards are 100 accurate but our existing stats web pages may have some missing data prior to the update.
* A fix to address the issue where some players were unable to start the story-based campaign if Xbox LIVE was down or unavailable.
