Mechwarrior 4 Free!

You may see it as µTorrent.

Their official torrent is working great. For some reason the original file from the temp folder wouldn't work. I want to open my present now!

Sheesh, I'm not used to these PC shenanigans! This seems awfully complicated. Apparently I've downloaded some gigabytes of something and it's perhaps installing something now. My old, old Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold joystick (bought for Heavy Gear II, I think...) seemed to install plug'n'play style, can't wait to get that torso twisting. A man needs four triggers and an 8-way thumbstick on his stick.

Edit: I can't believe that I didn't get a single error message, booting up the game and plugging in my joystick, which hasn't been used... since the original IL-2, I believe.

I decided to make a short online gameplay showcase of MechWarrior 4.
If you were looking for a reason to try it... well, here you go:

Is there any way to play this game in 720p or 1080p? My computer's connected to my TV, and neither resolution seems to be available. 4:3 resolutions aren't displayed well by my screen, unfortunately.

Do I need a Mektek forum account to get the game? I'm trying to navigate their website but its very confusing. Most of the documentation is about how and what patches to install.

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=426 seems to offer a way to get custom resolutions.

Most programs will work. uTorrent is one of the most popular. Just install and open the torrent files, basically.

Listen to the pirate.

I resemble that comment!

Thanks, I'll try it out.

I finally got it working over the weekend. When set on Ultra High graphics, I would get driver errors and it wouldn't run. Putting it down to just High made it run ok. Wow I always remembered the graphics being pretty good, hate when these old games crush my shiny memories.

I don't know which of these would qualify as 720/1080p, but these are the following resolutions available in the game:

(listed in the same order they appear in the in-game drop-down menu)

640 480
800 600
1024 768
1152 768
1152 864
1280 1024
1400 1050
1600 1200
2048 1536
1280 768
1280 800
1366 768
1280 854
1440 900
1440 960
1600 900
1600 1024
1680 1050
1920 1200
2560 1600
3840 2400

Worth noting, you have to choose these from the in-game Options menu (can't choose them from the out-of-game settings program). Also, the menus are always at 640x480; only the actual in-game combat changes to the resolution settings you chose. Finally, I've never tested any of the widescreen resolutions, but I've heard some of them stretch the game slightly (they were added by MekTek). You'll have to test it and see how they fare.

Unless I'm mistaken (I could be, I was registered and logged in when I downloaded the game), you don't need to register for the forums to download the game. All you need to do is go to http://www.mektek.net/index.php?pid=13 and download the appropriate files.

If you're doing a fresh installation (haven't downloaded the free version yet), I believe you can avoid using MTX by downloading the following files:

Mechwarrior4: Mercenaries MTX FULL Install (version .0021)
MTX Extract and Patch Utility: Latest Download (v.0.0.1.5)
Winpatch - Non-MTX Patching Method: Mechwarrior4: Mercenaries Patch (version .0021 to .0022)
Winpatch - Non-MTX Patching Method: Mechwarrior4: Mercenaries Patch (version .0022 to .0023)

All of the above should be in the link I provided.
You'll need a torrent program like uTorrent for some of these files.

MekTek really needs to make this easier to install. They did a bad job explaining what you need and what you don't.

Please tell me if I listed the proper files. It's been a while since I installed the game; I might have missed something.

So I take the full install file. Run it through the extract and patch utility then apply both patches one after the other?

bunches of resolutions

Saw those, but sadly most do not qualify (1366x768 and 1600x900 being the two exceptions, but my tv won't display those over hdmi). My Panasonic plasma needs either 1920x1080 or 1280x720. I think I can get 1366x768 to work however if I use the vga input rather than hdmi. Graphics are old enough that any loss of quality won't be too noticeable, so I'll give it a try.

Correct... or at least, that's how they explained it. I used the older MTX method (a lot more frustrating), so I've yet to try the simpler approach.

Please tell us if you have success with the method I described. With the MW4 playdate coming in a week or two, it's important that we establish a "this is how you do it" plan-of-action.

Have you tried running the game in windowed mode at a near-match resolution (such as 1280x768)? If you use Alt+Enter to switch to Windowed Mode, you should be able to avoid any funky resizing errors. It might not be perfect, but it could be a decent alternative for your dilemma.

also worth trying. Prob try the 1680x1050 since that would fit pretty close to my 1080p Windows resolution.

Thought i'd try this again to see if the MTX software was working any better, and it is. This time I managed to actually download the game and got as far as the installation but then it was missing a file (texture.mp4); so I figured I would try downloading it via the torrent and installing it via MTX...same thing.

Guess i'll try again in another month.

I got it all updated and tried it out, works pretty well, but I realized quickly I'd need to spend a million years remapping keys.

Soo... I finally went and got the ol' Sidewinder Pro out of storage.

Holy crap, I forgot how awesome these games are with a real joystick (and force feedback!). I'm gonna love having some time to sit down and play.

Arise thread! After digging up Mechcommander 1&2 and reading about the new mechwarrior game coming out I've been craving a little battlemech action. The last game I played apart from demos is Mechwarrior 3 waaay back in the day.

Are there any goodjers still playing this? And if so, does the MTX software work any better these days? The installation and patching process was really complicated when they first put this out, but it seems like you can just do a one step install from MTX now.

MTX hasn't gotten any better, but you can get torrent URL's for the game and patches here and use the client of your choice to download them.

Too late I guess. I used MTX to download and install. Now I have to patch the game I think. The client is still a piece of crap and regularly freezes for no apparent reason as if it had a recurring stroke or something. You click a button and it just decides to do nothing for 20 seconds. Bizarre.

EDIT: Got the game running, can I get rid of MTX now?

WOW I am terrible at this. Can someone please recommend me a workable mouse and keyboard control scheme? I managed to set torso rotation to mouse control so I can at least point and shoot at stuff, but the sensitivity is all wonky.

Also who decided to make the default mech skin hot pink?

EDITEDIT: Found it.

I'm still struggling with the mouse controls. When I set mouse to control Torso instead of Turning it seems that it sets different acceleration for X and Y movement.
