Mechwarrior 4 Free!

Can someone maybe post the .torrent files somewhere? I can't even get their MTX setup file to *start* downloading, let alone start the MW4 download..

Here's the one for the main 1.8 Gig download.

Not a big fan of MTX (it seems very fickle and unpolished; prone to freezing on my old PC), but if this is what it takes to revive the MW4 community, I'll cope.

I look forward to seeing you guys in-game over the weekend!

I don't know what's going on but I appear to just be a seed machine. I tried to limit my upload to 10kb/s and all I got in return is an entirely unresponsive download client that crashes on restart. Why can't I just torrent it like normal people!?

If you look in your "Program Files/Mektek.net/MTX/temp/games/torrents" directory you'll find the .torrent files for the install. You can then open it with a real client and download it that way. The MTX software is garbage.

Thanks for the location it's appreciated becuase the software was garbage and wouldn't let me download.

Grr! Link to download leads to a 404 error for me.

Yeah, nothing from MekTek is loading at all now. Officially hosed, piped, wanged, slammed, etc. I left it running overnight, not sure where it got in the downloading process.

Seeing as it's a front end for a torrent client, with some automation for patching. I have to wonder if MTX is part of the agreement with MS/S&T to release it. Apart from "hey guys I can code this really awesome distribution app", I really can't see why they they didn't simply release standalone installers for the game/patches, I can see many other options for this that would have worked out better for what is essentially MW4 and a mod.

^The main reason they went for MTX, besides plugging their other work (AT1), is to make updates to MW4 more easily accessible. They are going to keep adding content; they have another dozen mechs and weapons already developed and currently undergoing testing, in addition to gameplay mechanic changes. From that perspective, creating a standalone torrent program/update-checker is a great idea on paper since even beginners can understand it.

Sadly, MTX is rancid. If it weren't so unstable, maybe it would have worked out... but in it's current state, we would indeed be better off with a simple installer.

Somewhat related: MekTek has been down for about six hours now. I'm assuming it crashed due to traffic... which would be fine if more than ten people had successfully downloaded and installed the latest versions of MTX and MW4.

Paraphrasing a shack comment, but if you're intelligent enough to understand MW4, you're intelligent enough to understand patching a game. I'll grant them that it's good to try and make something that will accomplish autopatching, but IMHO they need to look objectively at MTX and right now it doesn't give a good experience.

Looking at how mods get distributed there are many other ways to accomplish it, a browse around moddb will do. A main installer and a patch installer to take you to the latest version. One solution that springs to mind would be a launcher that pulls a version number from a server, compares it to what's currently installed and if there's a new version available points you in the direction of a webpage containing the file(s) you need to download (www.example.com/mw4/patch.html?game_...). The other thing that gets my goat is turning your machine into a torrent seed and not being up-front about it

Wouldn't surprise me if the delays were in developing this MekTek garbage. What a poor pile of programming this thing is.

Agree this has been a real bummer so far. I did manage to get the download to complete last night and the install to complete. I now get the prompt to install the CD which I assume means it needs to patch - but that's impossible since their site has been down. That MTX client is just a disaster. Hangs - unresponsive - crashes. Just seems completely unnecessary. Feel bad complaining about something that's free though.

So more help in avoiding MTX is needed for patching? never fear!

The first patch can be downloaded with a real bit torrent client from this link.

After you install that, the second one is here.

Is there somewhere special we should install to so that it will work with their MTX crap for updates when they get it cleaned up?

edit: oh, I see, it just downloads their wacky .mtx files. That works.

A .MTX file is a renamed .ZIP

Interesting. So this software can probably be entirely worked around. Gonna try that now seeings as MTX is totally dead.

Curses. Some resources are just zipped up in the mtx file, others need to be "patched" using that stupid installer, but because it's pulling resources from a site that's totally hosed at the moment, it doesn't work.

The upside is, unzipping works, and I'm able to launch the game, but I believe the patch is probably what allows for higher resolutions to be used.

I missed the boat downloading from mtx. the torrent links have been a big help, thanks.

I'm unzipping the main file now. hopefully i can get it installed.

Edit: Success! now hopefully I can get this patched.

Edit2: Even more success. I can't find a server but I think i'm up to the latest version.

Move the .torrent files and the .mtx files for the patches into the subdirectories in the mektek.net folder in your program files. Once you've done this, the craptastic MTX software will see them there and be able to install them with only minimal amounts of pain and frustration.

It is indeed the .20 patch that will allow you to use widescreen resolutions, although I still had to manually edit the config to get 1920 X 1080 to work.

Thanks Elycion! I was able to get the patch .mtx files downloaded using your torrent links. Stupid MTX won't work at all for me right now though (just complains that it can't connect to the site. Tells me I must not have an Internet connection. Silly software).

I'm trying to extract the patches manually now - see what that gets me. Honestly I really don't want to play MW4 this badly. I think getting it running has become my current "Game of the Day".

Downloading now. Can't wait to check it out.

I'm downloading all the files through utorrent and that's working, but am I reading right that I need something else from the mektek site to install and patch the game when the other files are done?

I haven't tried multiplayer, but single player works fine with just the files from the torrents. Just extract them to a directory and you're good to go.

I see that a lot "Just extract the torrent files to a directory and you're good to go." I must just be dense because it's still prompting me to install a CD. Of course, I got the big download done and MW installed before mektek's site threw up. I just had to get the patch files from the torrent. Anyone figured out what goes where specifically?

Yeah, can we get a step by step guide to getting everything working without MTX, that's simple enough that even Rabbit could follow it.

Has anyone found a mirror so I can bypass the crappy torrent DL? Is this even worth downloading if I have the physical disc already?

No, you really can't. While the primary install will work without MTX, one or both of the patches require MTX in order to install them. Without the patches, you'll get the "Insert CD" failure message, and you won't be able to select widescreen display resolutions.

The best I can offer is to tell you to use the download links I provided to actually acquire the torrents using a decent client, then move the files into MTX's temporary directory where it will then do the installs for you. Even then, don't be surprised if MTX chokes and needs to be restarted 3-4 times to get it done properly. This thing is a monumentally crappy piece of software.

This means you've only got the 1.8 Gig primary install file, or at best that plus the first patch. It's the second patch that will actually remove the copy protection.

I can't get it at all cause it is a torrent and I'm on a campus that blocks torrents. Also, This software sucks. I just wanted to reiterate that.

... really? I downloaded the main file and both patches from torrents after MTX went down. I just overwrote the main files from the patches in order and it runs. I didn't try to hop on a server because I couldn't see anything so maybe something is screwed up. It runs without a cd, though.

So do you put everything in the torrents/ directory (torrents and mtx files)? I keep getting "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.mektekdev.com" which is obvious enough, it's down. But if I go to "games available" it doesn't see any of the stuff I've downloaded. I tried putting the mtx files in temp/games, and in temp/games/torrents, but no luck.

Yeah, apparently if it can't talk to the website it completely stops functioning. I have it all installed fully through the MTX program yet I get the same error connecting and empty list.

You may be right, I'm going off the dozens of reports I read about the patches not working unless you use MTX to install them. I certainly can't rule out the possibility of dozens of people on the internet being idiots though.
