When you cry manly tears of manliness

I just finished watching Avatar: The Last Airbender (cartoon series) a few days ago, and the last 4-part episode got me a few times. It was mostly tears of happiness for the way they resolved the character's plotlines, and I couldn't believe how attached I had gotten to some of them. Great series, although quite silly in many parts, my sense of humour was very compatible to the show, unlike my possibly-pod-person-wife .

My daughter points out that no one has mentioned the scene in Despicable Me where he

Spoiler:

reads his own story book to the girls at the end.

So adorable, and so weepy.

I saw that on my flight over here, and there was a hell of a lot of dust in my seat during that scene.

There are quite a few such moments in that series: When Aang loses Appa, the vignette in Ba Sing Sei with Uncle Iroh, and several others. Great series, really.

the vignette in Ba Sing Sei with Uncle Iroh

Oh dear god. Yes, I believe that one has been mentioned in this thread before. Made all the more sad because the extremely talented voice actor died from esophageal cancer. Their replacement was never quite right. Iroh was my favorite, and I think the voice acting hole left by Mako's death caused his character to be featured far less in the final season.

In the new guy's defense, he did audition for the part and was chosen with consent from Mako. Apparently, he'd covered for Mako before and he vouched for him. He actually voiced part of the episode in Tales of Ba Sing Sae and I didn't notice.

I noticed the second time I watched it, because I knew what to listen for at that point. But the first time, riding blind? Yeah, didn't catch it.

I did think it was funny that Iroh only grunted for the first 6-7 episodes of the third book. It was almost painful how hard they were trying to develop him without speech.

I know it was mentioned back at the beginning of this thread, but I just re-watched Iron Giant over the weekend.
The whole scene between "You stay. I go... No following," and "Superman" just get's me every damn time.

It's been years since I subjected myself to that, but...yeah...Iron Giant takes manly tears to the next level.

I get pretty teary eyed at almost all of the LotR, Firefly, BSG, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Saving Private Ryan, Glory, and Pixar movies scenes already mentioned.

Here are some of the worst offenders, in no particular order:

Saving Private Ryan
At the very beginning where Ryan, and his family, are walking through the graveyard. Knowing why he keepss walking faster and faster until he finds that one particular headstone, makes that scene intensely powerful for me.

LotR
Boromir's Death.
That ending sequence when the Elves are leaving in their ships.

BSG
Scar - Starbuck's toast to the fallen pilot's.
Passage - Adama visiting Kat, in the sickbay. Starbuck putting Kat's photo, on the Wall of Remembrance.
Sometimes a Great Notion - Dee's suicide.

Firefly
The Message - The funeral.

Band of Brothers
Lots of tear jerker moments, but the one that floors me every single time (even just thinking about it as I write this, starts making me have to blink), is at the very end of the series, when the real-life Maj. Dick Winters quotes a a letter written to him; "I cherish the memory of a question my grandson asked me the other day, when he said: 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' Grandpa said, 'No... but I served in a company of heroes.' "

And lastly...

Taking Chance
My feelings about this movie are very similar to those expressed by the folks who saw Grave of the Fireflies. Great movie, in every respect, but so very emotionally draining.

If you rent it from Neflix (can't download it unfortunately), I highly recommend you have a large box of Kleenex within reach throughout the entire movie. We're not talking about just one, or two scenes, of manly-tears. More like, turn on the water-works every five minutes, for 77 mins. Oh, and it's based on a true story, as well. If that makes any difference.

So. I just finished The Road. Goddamn bleak. But being a father, I couldn't help shedding a tear or two. But that paled in comparison with the dread some of the scenes instilled. Damn.

I actually just finished this as well, and while I didn't really care for it very much, there are some brutal scenes like

Spoiler:

The baby in the fire

That shocked me too.

I suppose I can understand how you might not have liked it, but The Road really moved me. I'm just not sure I've got enough in me to read it again...

Still Vin Diesel's best acting job in that movie.

Saw Tangled today. Great movie. And some super happy and heavy sad moments both had everyone in the theater swinging one way or the other, near tears. Great movie. Best non-Pixar Disney movie I've seen in a long time, might replace Aladdin as my favorite.

The room was definitely dusty when I watched Mary & Max.. Best claymation movie I've ever seen, and available on Watch Instantly.

Jurassic Bark

The scene in Cinderellaman where he ends up begging for money to get his kids back. Gets me just about every time.

Listening to Christmas music at work tonight. I managed to keep from totally losing it, but only just.

Take care out there brother. We're wishing you (and all the service men and women) a safe tour and a fast flight home.

I came REAL close right now watching it's a Wonderful Life when all the townsfolk came in with money to help George.

As did I. Such a sensational scene.

Yeah. I just got off the phone with my son on the other side of the world. Managed things while he was on the line, but then I had to hide in my room for a while, and uh, look for a sock I thought I lost in the bed last night under my pillow.

Toy Story 3. The end of it before driving off. For some reason I always get some dust in my eyes. Amazing coincidence.

My goddaughter got me Despicable Me for Christmas. My eyes started to water when...

Spoiler:

...Gru kisses the girls goodnight and Margo says she loves him.

And am I the only who thinks it's weird that after appearing stark-ass naked in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jason Segel and Russell Brand do a kid's movie?

I had no idea of who was in it watching it through, but damn do I love that movie. 4 kids made the perfect excuse for buying it on Bluray

Watching it right now. George just got thrown out of the bar...

I bet they did their voice work completely naked.

Two-month resurrection...

Just finished the most recent episode of This American Life, titled "DIY". I won't spoil it, but at the end there, things got dusty in the car.
