Minecraft

I made good use of the customizer but sadly it does not include any options for stone. Maybe I'll send him an e-mail and ask him to add it?

So here's a dumb question - all these texture packs and so on have files that you can extract, but all I have is a minecraft.exe file. The readme on one talked about a minecraft.jar file - what? Do I need a different version of the game now?

It will be under C:UsersUsernameappdata
oaming.minecraft in Vista/Win7, be sure to turn on view hidden files under View -> Folder Options -> View

%appdata%\.minecraft is easier and should work on anything XP and later. Plus it won't matter if hidden files are shown.

Request timed out.

Yeah, I just tested myself and saw that didn't work. My router had ICMP replies disabled. Try now and you should get a response.

The ping worked but still can't connect to server.

Fixed. I updated my router firmware and while it reset afterwards it seems the firewall wasn't allowing any access. A full power off brought everything back inline. Sorry about that guys.

Nice. Time to build/destroy.

Anyone else here use cactus like barbed wire for your perimeter?

Just did it last night. I love going out in the morning and picking up my free loot. I'm working on adding a river to the defensive network.

One comment... You all seem to agree that cobblestone looks like crap and natural stone looks great. I disagree. Natural stone bores me to tears, does not look remotely 'castle like' and is more work than its worth. Ultimately, I think I'd quit playing if I had to build with it.

I'm loving the Painterly Pack, especially how all the different kinds of items and armor have unique appearances, except there's one small deal breaker for me: the stone is WAY too dark! When I'm digging up or down I need to place a torch every other square or I can't see what I'm doing. Anyone know an easy way to get back the original stone texture, or at least a lighter one?

Painterly Pack has a customizer you can use to download alternate textures. Maybe that will help? Alternately, you could do a little picture editing before you import painterly and lighten the color.

I built a cactus forest on the outside of my fence. Now all I do at night is run around in circles around my wall (on the inside of the fence) and watch the hostile mobs run into the cacti until they die. Occasionally though, they will get right up against the fence and since you can't plant right next to the fence, they are safe from the cacti. Then I just stab them through the slats with my sword.

This is most useful against skeletons because the skeletons will attempt to back away from you if you try to stab them. This often results in your having to take damage whilst chasing them down. Having a cactus behind them prevents them from doing this effectively.

Anyone have any useful walkthroughs on texture editing?

This is awesome!

Well, he could have pulled the downloads at least, doesn't keep those who are playing out but would keep out new moochers. But as you say, lemons to lemonade. People are trying the game risk free for now, and I think it's going to be good for Notch.

Definitely. Everything I had heard about this game up to this point had convinced me that it was not for me. Now, I'm at work and fantasizing about playing this game. It's been a while since I've had that from a game. I want him to fix it, though, so I can get sounds and other features.

I avoided the game for ages, then one day just cracked, and wished I had months ago.

And one thing that doesn't get spoken about often enough is the music, it is seriously awesome.

Notch should definitely put that on his Minecraft main page, front and center. People want to know what the game is and that tells them.

Even if I do think all the Inception-music ripoffs are played out.

Notch already has it featured on his blog.

Here's an Australian video (TV?) segment reviewing Minecraft

Would this be a bad time for me to note that I'm pretty sure mobs (with the possible exception of chickens) can't go through doors even if they're open?

I've had zombies go through open doors. I think a skeleton once.

Water, on the other hand, will not go through open doors, I was surprised to learn.

Man. It's like you don't know anything about science.

I had an idea for a lever-operated flooding mechanism, but the water would not go through the open door. And there's really nothing else a lever system can do.

Reskinning Minecraft.

I also found this Minecraft Texture Switcher that looks cool but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

And here is a more detailed explanation for installing and uninstalling texture mods from the MC forum.

Thank you, clever id. Your forum name is both accurate and informative.

I recommend a blend of Mixcraft and Painterly, if you feel like pulling out the Gimp. A little copy-paste work gets you a long way with the textures.

Alright you F2P people, I just heard there wasn't sound if you just grabbed the latest exe as it doesn't download the resource files currently. I've uploaded my resource directory

Grab this file, extract it to %appdata%\.minecraft and restart Minecraft.

Heh, when I started it up just now, the pulsing yellow text was "Consummate V's!"

So I was digging, doing some straight-down kinda mining, and ran into these:

IMAGE(http://imgur.com/Sq4lL.png)

I can't dig through them. Is this the bottom of the world or some new material that I haven't seen before? Do I need a metal pick to get these?

That's bedrock, aka adminium. Nothing breaks them other than an admin in a multiplayer server.

And yes, that is essentially the bottom of the world.

Just for reference, here's what you need to break what:

Stone and Coal broken by Wood and up
Iron broken by Stone and up
Gold, Redstone and Diamond broken by Iron and up
Obsidian broken by Diamond.

Gold picks have the same characteristics as Wood.

I use PrtSC + Paint. Blow the image up to 135% and photobucket it.

I'm sure others use more sophisticated methods, though.

I am to please. If I can ever stop playing the game I should try making a texture mod.

Question: What are you guys using for screen capture? Good old fashion PrtScr? FRAPS? Something?

edit:(I'll sig that.)

Thanks Liquid! Now I can find out what it's like to explore a mine with sound. Maybe I'll be safer as I run around tunnels? Maybe not get scared out of my pants when I get hit from behind out of nowhere? Who knows!

Grandfather Mantis, you are a saint to the people. Without you, we would wither and die.

Oh dear no, the surprise and the following adrenaline shock will be much more intense when the camera jolt and health loss is accompanied by a loud *TWANG*.
