Has anyone ever found an apple? Seems like the only thing to do with gold (apart from making crappy tools or gold blocks for building) is making gold apples. Which you can't do without regular apples.

Only from a dungeon chest once. I've found a lot of dungeons, too.

I've found a handful of dungeons. 2 or 3 zombie ones, 1 skeleton one, 1 or 2 spider ones. No creeper ones as of yet. Not sure if they exist. Never found an apple.

Found 1 record but now I can't find it. Not sure what happened to it. I think it may have been destroyed at some point when a creeper blew up my storage chests. I'm sad now, I wanted to build a record player and listen to it

Just grabbed this due to the impromptu free weekend...

The copy of Morrowind I got with a video card purchase came with the construction set. Basically the tools to allow you to modify the game.

I spent a couple weeks making an apartment, a backstory for the guy who lived there, and detailing it, down to giving him a fully equipped kitchen, with meats lying on the counter on sheets of paper, next to knives, a fully set dinner table, and a ton of other stuff no one in their right mind would bother with.

I hate to copy Penny Arcade's joke, but I think I'm in trouble here.

I wish I still had that Morrowind apartment, but it got lost during a hard drive upgrade.

I picked this up for the free weekend as well. Might have spent 8 hours with the game today...

I think I maybe need to buy this.

I hate paypal though. Won't he let me buy it using my cc?

I just jumped into my first big cave system; there was one skeleton in there. I got down to the bottom and dug towards the sound of water, eventually locating a big natural waterfall going way down into the earth (I saw lava at the bottom); another fork led down to two creepers, and more stuff I can hear behind walls. I'm going to turn back now and set up a fortification up top to keep all these minerals I found in the event I don't make it.

That's the first glimpse I got of my main headquarters heading back from the cave. I'm relieved I was able to find it.

I think somebody mentioned he's in the process of looking for an alternative payment provider after that whole debacle with paypal earlier.

My sense of timing apparently hasn't improved with age ... just when I get interested enough in this to give it a try, the server gets flashmobbed and I can't register an account. Just to add insult to injury, there's a "play free while it's down" offer that apparently only applies to Windows users Twiddling my thumbs impatiently for him to get it back online...

So today a pig jumped through my window and before I could react he jumped back out! My new MO was to wrangle him back in and make him my best friend in the world. I messed around with him a bit and then remembered I had FRAPs running in the backround. This is the story. This is the rise and fall of Mr. McPorkenstein.
(NSFW I curse a bit and Gaald randomly says sh*t)

...I need to sleep more. I also find my transition from just messing around to being legitimately pissed off at this pig somewhat funny.

Does anyone know how water works in the single player, I was trying to channel a spring to form a moat but it only runs for 4/5 blocks and them you have to dig down another level.

You do realise you could have dug away the front of your house, THEN push him inside and built it up again afterwards instead of trying to fit him through a 1x2 doorway...right?

You need lots of water. It only travels a distance of 7 tiles on a flat surface. To make still water (if you want that), you'll need to fill every other square with a spring. Dig a 2x2x1 pit, and put water in two opposite corners. That'll give you an infinite supply to draw from.

Ha. I do the same thing. The space immediately around my base is a virtual forest. I take the extra minute to remove all the leaves from a tree I cut down to make sure that the sapling I plant in its place can immediately grow. Oddly, I've found the hoe is the best tool for quickly removing the leaves.

I've found burning the leaves is the most efficient way to get rid of them. Also on the wood note, I like to use it for ceilings in the 'living' areas of my castle, and definitely for my furnace.

Anybody else find obsidian disgustingly boring to work with? I am considering hacking that into my single player game simply to avoid the irritation.

Lava moats are awesome.

Sheep are dying
Pigs are frying
I bask in the warm lava-glow

Zombies are sighing
Spiders are shrieking
Damn those skeletons and their bows!

Anyone else here use cactus like barbed wire for your perimeter?

One comment... You all seem to agree that cobblestone looks like crap and natural stone looks great. I disagree. Natural stone bores me to tears, does not look remotely 'castle like' and is more work than its worth. Ultimately, I think I'd quit playing if I had to build with it.

I'm with you for the most part. I don't mind stone, but a combination of the two looks best to me. If I'm building an exterior wall, I'll have body of the wall be cobble and the walkways of stone.

Other folks: I wasn't aware of the disdain for cobble around here, is that the case?

I have also been taking advantage of the free weekend and been enjoying the hell out of it. Can't wait until I can give that man some money.

I initially thought the free play was a stupid idea, I'm coming around on that now.

I'm loving the Painterly Pack, especially how all the different kinds of items and armor have unique appearances, except there's one small deal breaker for me: the stone is WAY too dark! When I'm digging up or down I need to place a torch every other square or I can't see what I'm doing. Anyone know an easy way to get back the original stone texture, or at least a lighter one? Otherwise I'm going to need to uninstall the pack. It makes it impossible to explore caves and that's what I signed up for.

Only problem is you can't go high up at night. If that thing explodes, it takes out the entire world.

Dear Notch,

Consensus seems to be that it's too dark and noisy. I don't mind it that much either.

From what I understand it wasn't his idea. Something broke and people were playing for free anyway. He simply turned a great big honking lemon into great big honking lemonade.

Well, he could have pulled the downloads at least, doesn't keep those who are playing out but would keep out new moochers. But as you say, lemons to lemonade. People are trying the game risk free for now, and I think it's going to be good for Notch.

I'm a bit concerned though. People who got in early and, less early, understand that the game is an alpha and know what that means. People coming in through Penny Arcade may not understand that there is something in development that comes before the beta, especially when the word 'Beta' has become synonymous with 'demo.'

Looking at blog comments highlights this, I hope Notch has a thick skin.

I thought it was that people couldn't play at all? Since the authentication server is his web server the update DDoS kept anyone from logging in so he just removed that until he gets a real infrastructure. I could be mistaken.

Seems like the F2P is going to work really well for him, giving a demo of the current game finally. It was a little scary when I realized that without authentication if I wasn't connected to the server anyone could just log in with my name and have admin rights. Luckily the mod I use updated to include IP restriction before one of the great unwashed figured to use the domain name for their username.

Just did it last night. I love going out in the morning and picking up my free loot. I'm working on adding a river to the defensive network.

Painterly Pack has a customizer you can use to download alternate textures. Maybe that will help? Alternately, you could do a little picture editing before you import painterly and lighten the color.

So here's a dumb question - all these texture packs and so on have files that you can extract, but all I have is a minecraft.exe file. The readme on one talked about a minecraft.jar file - what? Do I need a different version of the game now?

Question for those playing free, when you launch the game do you just leave the username and password blank? I have someone I've told to try it asking.

That works since there's no authentication check. You can enter whatever you want there. For those doing that and trying to join the MP server though I can't give you any rights.

Hey liquid, is it just me or is the server down?

It will be under C:\Users\Username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft in Vista/Win7, be sure to turn on view hidden files under View -> Folder Options -> View

Everything looks good to me. Can you ping liquidmantis.com?
