Yes, boats are faster than running.

Does boat travel in a straight line go faster than running? I'm pretty sure it does, but haven't tested it for sure. If so, building a sky canal would be sort of like building a monorail or elevated train.

If you can, line the sides the the half height steps (44) that way its harder to break apart your boat by accident crashing into the wall.

Yeah, the increased ease of building a single straight row is great.

I haven't tried playing around with the mine tracks yet - How do you make the moving cart? (cart + forge?)

...or has he just given it a shove before taking the video?

What I am curious about is how he got the creepers in the carts to begin with. Do they get stuck when they jump in?

My guess is he baited them in via that block of land that come up to the track like some sort of a cattle chute.

Ok, I whipped up an autohotkey script that will make crouch a toggle.

Download Autohotkey if you don't have it installed.

Grab the script from my site. Run that, and when Minecraft is active pressing CapsLock will cause your crouch to be toggled.

Here's the code which I sure will get mangled:

#NoEnv
#singleinstance force

crouch:=0
run:=0

#IfWinActive, Minecraft
Capslock::
If crouch
SendPlay {LShift Down}{LShift Up}
Else
SendPlay {LShift Down}
crouch:=!crouch
return

XButton1::
If run
SendPlay {w down}{w up}
Else
SendPlay {w Down}
run:=!run
return

t::
SendInput t
crouch:=0
run:=0
return

[Edit] I went ahead and added an autorun. Mouse4 (back) will toggle run. I renamed the file to just minecraft.ahk since it's expanding. Link above is updated. Not sure if anyone is using this but I dig it.

[Edit2] Tweaked it since T causes run and crouch to stop.

Annnd I'm hooked. Where did the last two hours go? I found a nice peninsula with a great view to build my house. I've started to go to work leveling the ground, getting everything ready. At night, I swim across the bay and work on my mining complex. Everything seems to be progressing well. Until I left my cave this morning and almost got killed by a spider. I had a moment of panic when I realized that I had absolutely no idea how to get back from my spawn point. So I just spent the last 20 minutes building a spire as tall as I could in hopes of being able to see it from a distance when I inevitably die. And now, somehow, I have to take a break... in just a few more minutes.

Mobs and animals inherently like carts. I have come back to my carts many times to find a duck or cow just sitting in them. If you are getting cased by a mob (not sure about spiders due to there size) and run them past a cart most of the time they will just jump in.

You can put a furnace in a cart and feed it coal and it will run on its own pushing other carts in front of it. Its not fast. most people who use carts for travel use a "cart launcher" instead. Its a bug where two carts on separate tracks next to each other collide and can be used send them off at a really fast speed.

As for mine-carts, I believe that when animals get "hit" by a cart, they go into it and can't get out until they are pushed or killed.

Fortress defense tactic: The perpetual moving moat o' mine carts. Also works as an excellent shooting gallery.

Nope, Minecraft resets those states. I added a reset to the script that will keep those states synched so you don't have to press the toggles twice to resynch now.

http://mantisonthemountain.com/minec...

[Edit] New version fixes that! I didn't care about renewing the autorun, but that's easily added too. I just got tired of falling off edges after I pulled up inventory. This version will put you back into crouch after chatting or opening inventory.

Looks good but again, I wouldn't want to be in the hot tub during a dragon or giant attack

Not as much as yours!

I was considering taking my gold ingots and making myself a solid-gold bed.

I just found my first monster spawner, and my first lava fountain. Ironically, it's on the first "floor" of my diggings. I've been walking past the thing to explore for the last three real days.

How do I kill the spawner? Every time I get close to it the thing spawns two creepy spiders who push me into the lava fountain.

Quintin, that's amazing. Did you do that in survival mode?

Put torches on all 4 sides, and nothing will spawn from it.

By the way, don't destroy the spawner! You have a thread farm there. For spiders, make your room like this:

(Key: D - Dig out, S - Spawn box, B - Block, G - Glass, W - Water Spring)
Note: This is from the top down.

Place the water springs from above once everything but the blocks with the torches on them is done. Then bust the blocks with the torches and get the heck out of there (you might want a door to run out and slam behind you)! You can then seal off the ceiling of the room. Spiders will be swept into the flooded pit and drown, while you safely collect their thread in the area to the left, on the other side of the glass wall.

A similar farm can be built for zombies with a 1x5 pit and only 5 water springs. I was lucky enough to have a zombie spawner right near the surface by my base. Feathers++!

I'll give it a try later tonight. I've copied the save to my laptop so I can 'speriment there. I'll probably be back to ask questions.

Yes, a lot of hours devoted to mining & spelunking.

Quintin, color me f*cking impressed. If it were real I'd want to live there.
