Minecraft

Go with a boiling oil approach and have a pool of lava you can uncork and allow to fall on where the 'sploders camp. Then just use a cobble block to re cork. Although, I like the sound of the fist of god trap.

So, I logged into LM's server "just to take a quick look at MP". Soon enough I found myself exploring a cave complex near the spawn(You'll know I've been there by all the torches which I'm happy to see are persistent). After which I began to develop a deep underground lair. Then Yoyoson logged in, and he and I spent some time trying to hit each other with various tools and whatnot. I then invited him to go spelunking and took him down to my lair where he soon fell into lava(muahahaha), but we found that upon death he respawned in the same spot where he died. Fortunately he got out of the lava before he died the first time.

Yeah, stupid fun. I think I'll really enjoy this.

Fun times indeed. And yeah, it would've been quite unfortunate if my new respawn point was the pool of lava...

I can't wait to start making circuits so I can light up danjo's sign. With TNT. Thanks liquidmantis, for setting this up.

Also, I had an idea in the shower regarding an oubliette trap and wanted feedback to see if it would work. I have a problem with the exploding zombies camping out my front gate. I have plans to make a secondary gate, but even still, I don't have a bow and arrow so I can't safely dispatch him from distance. Enter the drop trap.

I noticed that dirt is not subject to gravity, but gravel is. Moreover, a dropped block of gravel will actually kill. So if I make an overhang over the doorway that is sufficiently high enough that it won't activate the explodo-zombie's activation radius, but is also directly overtop of it, can I put a gravel block on top of a dirt block and simply dig out the dirt when the zombie is next to the door? Will the gravel dropped from height kill it? Will it explode once it is hit?

I dunno if you can destroy a torch via wired pressure plate, but that might be one way to activate the mechanism mentioned in the link.

I like it. I wish there was a trap door you could make.

_ <--- Pressure Plate

[_] <--- TNT wired to pressure plate?

Or is that just a landmine?

Though I guess if you can use torches to drop floors then all you need to do is hook up the pressure plate to a floodgate and hope the target doesn't move.

So, I hopped on LM's server for a little while before work today.

We noticed that Signs are not readable by anyone other than the person who placed it.

There has been a diving board and ladder attached to whom evers' massive tower of bricks in the main area. Try to land in the splashdown pool when you jump off.

I also made a tree house with an entrance to and underground cave. Feel free to expand on the cave as I barely had time get torches in there before I had to run off to work.

Hmm. I like the idea of a pressure plate being used to spring a live trap. Then I can use my oubliette trap to kill the prey when I check the traps after a couple days. If I construct the walls with dirt, I can simply dig them out and reset them.

Or you could put the pressure plate in a 1-square-width hallway and have it drop down walls in front of and behind the intruder, then hold him there till the sun comes out and vaporizes him!

That would work with skeletons and zombies, but not with spiders and creepers. Plus, you don't get to harvest the goodies when they burn off.

There was a machine built for harvesting mobs at night. Not sure if it still works in alpha but it did in indev

Really? I find arrows all over the place just after sunrise.

That is many flavors of awesome. Would it work with the creepers though or would they explode and drown you?

Oh, the cave has been expanded on.

That's what she said.

If you're outside you can just look up. The clouds always move towards the north.

I'm really digging what I'm reading about this game, but money is tight and I still don't really have a solid idea of what it is.

Can someone give me a three sentence idea? Like, Goal+Method+Motivation? Sentences like this are intoxicating and tempting but also make no effing sense whatsoever:

I'd played around the in-browser free version but couldn't really figure what each kind of block did, etc.

I'm not a visual learner?

Game play can be boiled down to a few steps each with a goal. When you 1st start your goal is to survey the immediate landscape and fine an area you will want to start building in. Before the first nightfall gather some basic supplies from trees and rocks and build yourself an in closed structure to keep you safe for the first night.

Next goal would be to build some basic tools for mining and wood cutting. Look for exposed cave entrances and try to find some coal.

Once you have coal you can make torches and the real game begins. Find a spot or a cave and just start digging using the torches to light your way. when you get deep the game can be scarier than a survival horror game.

Its all free form at this point. Dig for minerals. Craft tools for building and mining. Build a home or whatever structure you like.

Beyond that do whats fun as the are no real goals at this point that are not self made. In the future there will be many game play modes added including a rogue like dungeon crawl adventure.

Just remember its an Alpha and you have to make what enjoyment you can from it. I for one have no regrets spending what I have buying it for my wife and myself. It has given me more hours of gameplay that many full priced triple A titles have.

I enjoy this more than my SC2 purchase.

Beggars can't be choosers! =P

I'm wondering, given the awkwardness of in-game text chat, if we should request a vent channel. Thoughts?

Arovin, you can't access most of that stuff in the free client (classic), right? I don't see any way to gather materials or any of that jazz. Don't even see an inventory.

Yoyoson: I lulzed.

Correct, the free mode is classic mode, you just build stuff. What we're talking about is the paid version, which is survival mode - crafting + monsters. He has begun (very basic) testing of multiplayer survival mode. If you pay now, it's 10 euros. When it's finished, it's about 20 euros i believe.

I've had more fun with this purchase than probably my last 2 years worth of purchases combined. Multiplayer is going to be amazing. If you like computer games, sandbox games, and LEGOs, then this is pretty much nirvana right now.

Correct, the free client is more like going to the lego store where all the pieces are separated out for you and you can just build. That can be fun for some people but is not where heart of the game is.

The "Alpha" survival more makes you work for your "lego bricks". There is some risk vs reward. Do I keep exploring this cave network risking the loss of what I already have or to I run home and drop what I have off before I go deeper. Gives you a real scene of accomplishment when you build something you really like.

When multiplayer is fully functional survival mode fun could increase tenfold.

I'm in love with Legos, dig some sandbox games, like a few Nirvana songs, and avoid PC games whenever possible (clearly not, in this case).

I suppose I'll buy it after dinner tonight.

I second this. Or we just take over one of the more dead channels... or one of the other lesser "craft" games. Who plays Warcraft now anyway?

I had the same idea, Minecraft channel created. I only see this getting more popular as the server software blossoms.

[Edit] I'll say that this has got to be beyond a doubt the best $13 I've ever spent. I can't remember the last time a game sucked me in like this. Even with the current server limitations, running around with GWJers and pitching in on projects has been awesome. Then it's really cool to come back up above ground and seeing someone else's massive project.
