Minecraft

Anyone else find it strange concept to keep more than half a million euros (about US$763,000) on PayPal? I trust them enough to use them but if I had a chunk of change like that I'd move it to a separate bank account. One that's insured and accessible only through a bank where I could show up and person and say, "no, really, that's my money."

He says that he usually drains it, but that's what accumulated during the week he was traveling. Sounds about right for a week's income.

He probably just didn't have the chance to move the funds between all his traveling and setting up his company. And why would you think Paypal would just decide to cling to your cash out of the blue?

If that money really did come in during the last week or so Paypal may think he's an arms dealer.

Either that or they like the idea of holding onto 3/4 of a million dollars for a month without paying interest on it.

He explained it in the edit? Did everyone miss that? He took the money out every week, but they limited his account on the 25th and it has been accumulating money ever since then, which Notch is unable to transfer. So a little over two weeks worth of sales which Paypal has been holding onto.

I've had my own experiences with financial institutions definition of "suspicious transactions". It doesn't take much for a company to put a lock on an account but I'm surprised it's taken them this long to release it. Since it happened right around the time Notch says sales were spiking that probably raised some red flags in their system. If you have a pay pal account that's been taking in on average, say, 30k a week for the last few years then suddenly they get a massive spike where they're bringing in 300k a week that could trigger an investigation just because it's so out of the ordinary for that account.

I blame the sales spike on the GWJ coverage of Minecraft. So, really, you have no one to blame but yourselves. Stop making the game sound so interesting so that PayPal won't think this huge influx of sales is fishy.

Eh, because Paypal pulls that sh*t all the time.

It is fraud prevention thing that is happening with the paypal account. I would assume that paypal would have some sort of stream-lined way of resolving this issue but it does not seem to be the case.

Man I should have stuck with my programing in college! 600,000 euros in one week! That is crazy talk.

Awesome Friday Update is awesome:

+ Added server-side inventory
+ Made the server save player locations when they leave the server
+ Made chests work in SMP
+ Made signs work in SMP
+ Made furnaces work in SMP
+ Added monsters=false to server.properties. You can turn it on for experimental monsters, but you can’t hurt them directly yet. (Fire works, though!)

YESSSSSSSSS.

Yeah, I see people saying that now, but is it widely known information? I've never heard of it before, but it's the first time I've been following a situation like this.

The chance is Notch had no idea.

So....does this mean we go full survival with the MP server? I know there aren't hostile mobs yet, but still.

Oh, there's plenty of hostile mobs...

Woo-hoo!

So, are we going to start a new world or are we waiting for killable monsters? (Though let's face it; unkillable monsters would make for a *real* survival challenge.)

Since inventories work I suggest starting a new world, disabling the cheats, disabling the buggy monsters and seeing what the Goodjers can make with the tools.

Hey guys, lets consolidate chatter on MP, at least my server, in the MP thread.

Wow, the server is slammed right now.

Looks like one added feature for alpha will be an instant favorite...

Spoiler:

Compass! (assuming it really works, I haven't been able to update my client yet!)

Oh Lord yes, please yes! I'll have to "take a lunch" and check this out.

I'm curious how he'll solve the secure inventory puzzle. As things sit, chests are destructible. Indestructible chests would be a griefer's dream, right? And much easier to obtain than obsidian... Shudder. Of course, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. I suppose I'm a 'mineshaft half empty'* kind of guy today.

(* better than half full**...

** of lava!)

Apparently the compass doesn't point "north"; it points towards your spawn point.

Any port in a storm. Some frame of reference is better than none. Part of the reason I haven't ranged at all in my SP game is because I get lost in my own bathtub much less when I'm tromping around Cape Curly. I'm so bad I wrote an article about it for this site.

Correction: an *awesome* article...

At least that's a fixed point of reference! Now all you need to do to find that really cool new site is move "away" from your spawn point!

If you look up at the sky, the clouds move north. You can also navigate by the sun if you like.

Yeah, clouds always run north, the sun and moon both always rise in the east and set in the west...as long as you aren't underground, it's easy.

You spend time above ground? You can't mine any iron or diamond from there.

No strip mining for me, thanks. You have to find your way around somehow when looking for natural caves.

Points... at spawn? Um. My spawn was on a piddly island I left almost immediately. I guess I'm far enough away from it at this point that's it more or less a fixed angle, but still. Seems an odd choice when the game does have a concept of north/south/east/west.

SO I mentioned earlier that creepers blew up 2 of my strip-mining storage chests. I decided it was far past time to secure that area around the borehole. And what shows up as I'm putting up my walled area? Two creepers, of course! I was too high up on the wall to trigger their attack though. Good to know the new wall works. With 3 doors, each with some windows so I can scout the area before leaving.

I guess the compass would be useful for me, I tend to find maps that have decent spawns so I can prepare to build my home nearby. That way when I die I don't have to haul my poor soul over some mountainous terrain, and I tend to die a lot so it works for me.

For you other folks I believe there was something that could change your spawn location, most likely a hack of some sort, but it would allow you to set your spawn to your lovely fortress far from the original spawn.
