Minecraft

Edited slightly and cross-posted from the GWJ server thread:

Jeb announced today that he's now working on a "code block" that allows you to execute server commands with redstone signals, so, for example, redstone signal turns on, block sends command, you gain 500xp. Part of the adventure map improvements. Exciting times! :D.

I'm currently trying out the 1.3 pre release. Stable so far, but I haven't dug into anything too interesting. The starter chest is quite helpful.

It's a little light on new features. I think the main change was bringing SP and MP together so they don't have to duplicate all their effort from now on. That was probably a huge task and broke quite a bit.

Yeah there's a lot of code stuff in this release but there is a bunch of stuff for users too.

Link

The game now runs an internal server in single-player mode
The single-player server can be shared on LAN, with LAN server detection
Made it possible to use client-side commands by enabling cheats (this is defaulted as disabled for old worlds)
Added an optional “bonus chest” to get started quicker
It’s now possible to trade with villagers. Added emeralds as a currency
You gain enchantment orbs from other tasks than just destroying monsters. Max enchantment level has been decreased to 30
Servers can automatically suggest and distribute texture packs
Added new world map elements (does not need a new map, but they’ll only appear in new areas)
Added cocoa beans
Added an Ender chest
Added tripwire
Wooden logs can be placed sideways

I hope ReiMap updates soon. Now that mcmap is defunct, I don't have a quick and dirty offline map image generator for single-player. The webapp-based ones typically take forever.

mcmap is not defunct! We use it on the GWJ server. Zahl committed code just the other day and I'm working on a patch for the new 1.3 blocks.

But... if you want something really cool that will render very high quality maps and also does incremental renders, check out Minecraft Overviewer.

Hey, that is actually super fast. Nice!

So, do you still need to log in to the MC server to avoid the stupid "this version may be pirated" line that takes up half the screen in SP? Just thinking about that LAN play.... because, if so, it's pretty pointless, IMO.

I think that was more a "this is easy, why not?" than a "this is hard, but we'll do it because people want it!" feature. Kind of falls out for free from using a server to run the world even in SP mode (which simplified the code to avoid bugs happening only in one mode or the other).

You know, you can waste a lot of time on this game.

... what year is it? THE YEAR?!

I tend to think of it like other creative hobbies than don't really produce things of value, but are satisfying. Sort of like model railroading. You build this thing and you have fun playing with it. But it's still just a crafting hobby.

I still haven't played this.

Whoa! Technic just released a huge update. It now uses 1.2.5 and most of the mods have been updated to their latest versions.

Sucks that I have to restart my world (again), but seeing as I seemed to have spawned on a lava-free zone it's for the best.

For some reason, I find working my way up the tech levels to be more fun anyway. *shrug*

I do need to come up with some kind of world project, though....

That's an excellent description of it.

I wish there was a bit more control over the random world generation. It would be nice if I could pick mountainous, jungle, or some such. It's not a huge deal, though, because Kazad Dum is underground.

Get thee to the Internet!

And if you want a large area of only one biome, pick "large biomes" in the upcoming 1.3 version.

Dude when they say Large Biomes they mean it. I felt like Dr Livingston because I was lost in the jungle biome that I spawned in just trying the pre-release 1.3. I haven't tried the big change, the new SP to MP but having two accounts in the house that should be no problem.

Oh god, a Large jungle biome is a nightmare to contemplate. I hate the jungle. It gets worse here every day.

Welcome to the jungle, baby!

YOU'RE GONNA DIE!

So the next version comes out tomorrow huh?

It's been out for several days, at this point, if you fancy trying it early and manually replacing your .jar, but yeah, it'll auto-update for everyone tomorrow.

Or using magic launcher and just pointing it at a downloaded jar. I like it a lot.

So ModLoader and Rei's Minimap have already been updated to 1.3. Anyone know of other good mods that have been updated?

Who knew my biggest challenge in Teknik would be finding enough food to survive??

Can't you just fabricate a block that keeps you fed automatically?

This question presumes I know anything about what I'm doing in Teknik. I have only played vanilla with any success, and only started a serious attempt in Teknik last night.

Easiest thing to do is play lumberjack in a forest or jungle. Take down a dozen trees, allow the leaves to decay, and enjoy some tasty apples. A few previous iterations of the technic pack had much more interesting food and farming options, but the mods either were abandoned by the creators or the developer got into a slap-fight with the technic producers.

Yeah I did try that. The funny thing is, I found lots of animals to kill for food, which was fine except I am starving to death faster than I can cook the damn stuff, so I wind up eating it raw and wasting most of the value.

Even better change the mod_treecapitator.cfg file ( found in ...\AppData\Roaming\.techniclauncher\technicssp\config ) to have the line destroyLeaves=true Then use an axe (any kind) or the chainsaw to chop down the trees. You'll soon have plenty of apples.

Personally, I use a vanilla approach - grow wheat and make bread until I've made an animal farm. I use cows as the leather is very useful for the Thaumagic mod.

I've decided not to use the Equivalent Exchange mod as it's very game breaking - though ) may craft some of it's power items eventually.
