Minecraft

Remind me not to go hiking with you.

On the multi-player front, I extended our road system to the north through some awesome looking scenery. I'll extend it some more tomorrow.

There's so much awesome stuff on their, it seems a shame to wipe it. But, maybe it is getting a little cluttered.

I would like to see another cartograph map of world.

I think I am in favor of wiping the server too. What really want is to have a multiplayer survival mode with you guys. I think it would be amazing if we worked to build our own underground city with defenses and everything, and spawning everything in cheapens the wonder of some structures.

EDIT: I know Gamers with Jobs has a huge vent server with a Minecraft channel, but it never seems populated. We should hang out on there, or use my Mumble server. If people are interested in that I will post the details.

LM said he wouldn't be completely wiping the current world. At the least we could all download its final incarnation.

My apologies lobster, I was in the midst of cleaning it up when my internet connection kicked the bucket for about an hour or so. I came back in time to see a new valley with a bunch of sprouts planted. I wasn't much help

Also in favor of a new map with whatever update comes out on Friday. Definitely looking forward to a more primitive lifestyle for a time...but I do want to finish my Stadium before Friday.

Definitely, if you are going to reset the world upload it again for us to keep for single player.

Urrrgh! You filthy enablers are really pushing me to play this, but I can't spend the money right now. I hate you all.

I haven't decided which way I lean on the whole deleting the world question. I suppose it depends entirely upon what gets updated. If we get persistent sharable inventories then yeah, blow it away. If it just minor bug fixes and we still can't keep items after we log off then lets just keep going.

My sentiments exactly.

I haven't put as much time in the world as most of you but yeah, if this is a major update then I say wipe everything otherwise I say let's keep going with this one. We haven't dug the whole world down to bedrock yet.

Hopefully it fixes some minor stuff like, I got trapped behind a pair of doors last night. I could open them but the game kept rubber-banding me back though them whenever I tried to leave. I quit and respawned but it then wouldn't let me go back in. I had to dig out around them. (They're the two free-standing doors at the base of the Stairway to Heaven I'm building to the north.)

And I was on the vent channel but for some reason no one could hear anything but static whenever I tried to talk. I'll see if I can find out what's wrong with my audio setup before next time.

ETA: Oh yeah, I'm "paleogamer" in Minecraft; tanstaafl was already taken.

I never log on to the vent channel because I tend to play in shorter bursts. Log on, find something to blow up, blow it up, get frustrated that it DIDN'T BLOW UP GOOD, log off.

Not your fault, Druid. Just try not to build anything you wouldn't like demolished with copious amounts of TNT.

Name verification, banning, friday update and another trip!
BigJam was great! I did two interviews and a couple of games and met a whole bunch of talented and inspiring people. And Berlin is a beautiful city that I will definitely visit again!

As you might’ve seen in news posts and blog updates, some fairly important people who I consider my heroes want to talk to me (I’ve spoken with three of my favorite companies so far). Initial contact has been established, but nothing concrete has happened yet. I will go on a trip to the US in the start of September to meet with a couple of companies. I have no idea what will come out of it, but hopefully it will be cool.
If anyone in the northwestern area of the US wants to say hi somewhere around then, I’m sure we can work out some meeting. I’d love to meet you!

Now, to minecraft;
I’m working on name verification, a flag to start servers in offline/insecure mode, and banning support at the moment, and will probably release it today. It will require a client, server AND launcher update. :-O

Tomorrow, I will do a seecret friday update. Ooooh! I wonder what it could be? Perhaps hamsters? Perhaps turnips? Who knows!?

Server-side inventory is coming next week, including shared chests and so, and this is also when I will fix some of the bugs in SMP, like the ladder thing and the looking through walls bug.

Big company attention? Notch is already well-to-do; now he's gonna be *rich*.

I wonder whether Maxis is looking at this? Might be the thing to bring them back to their roots. But I'm still holding out for combining this with Dwarf Fortress. (I'll take Lego as a backup strategy, though.)

Northwestern US? Valve maybe?

And we've got a couple of TPTB up there; maybe someone can snag him for an interview for the conference call?

Anyone else use gravel for making roads? I mine the hell out of gravel for the obsidian, but (aside for use as fill or elevators) don't have much use for it afterwards. I have well over 400 gravel sitting in chests and figure it would probably not be a bad material for making roads.

+2. Backup the current world for download in case someone wants to go back and screenshot their stuff, but otherwise starting fresh might be nice.

/agreed, this is totally what I'm waiting for.

Client changelog:

* Added support for more records
* Added online authentication for online servers

Server changelog:

* The server can now be started in either online/secure mode or offline/insecure mode. A secure server requires all connecting players to first authenticate on www.minecraft.net, then checks that the authentication matches, before letting the player in. A server running in offline mode won’t do any such checks, nor will it ask the client to authenticate, but you can’t be sure that people who connect really are who they claim they are. Offline mode is meant for LAN plan where you know the people connecting to the server.
* Added ban/pardon commands to ban and unban a player from the game
* Added ban-ip/pardon-ip commands to ban and unban a specific ip (you have to kick the player manually)
* Added op/deop commands to add/remove a player from the op list
* Added player ops. They can send server commands by typing a slash followed by a server command. Server ops can also build/destroy blocks near the spawn area.
* Made the server save terrain more frequently

Sooo.... Valve then? After they did pimp him on the TF2 blog.

Well, looks like we have another week to play around with our current world.

Ok, the mod still looks to work with the new server update so I've gone ahead and switched to the new version. You'll probably need to update your client.

In Notch's blog he just recently updated it with a blurb about Bethesda and said he'd met with three companies so far but doesn't say who. He's about to head to the northwest somewhere for another meeting.

latest update says you have to download a new version if you use the stand alone client.

Doesn't seem like Bethesda's style. Then again, they are trying to branch out, right?

Hmm. Fallout: Minecraft.

Trying to pick up more stuff to publish, yeah.

Yeah! We Lobster wants to blow it up and create our own dystopia!

It's true, dystopia requires a lot of TNT.

Or a texture mod.

So we're building Megaton tonight?

Oh and it was kinda strange. I build this nice big road last night to the northlands. I came back this afternoon during lunch and sections of it were missing. It's almost like parts of the map reverted to an earlier version.

I managed to fix it up though.

There are a lot of nice empty places to build along it though.

Bethesda has now given a shout out to Minecraft. Notch has got to be happy with the recognition he is getting. Good to see the indy developers can still get noticed.

Come to think of it, maybe Bethesda wants to buy Minecraft to improve their character models?
