Sony Press Conference Catch-All

So I just looked through 4 pages of comments and I gather that Team Ico is making a game that is on some level related to Shadow of Colossus, Gran Turismo still doesn't have a launch date, despite having a demo available for a really really long time, MAG is apparently impressive, whatever it is, the PSP redesign doesn't do it for anyone, especially not at $250 and they're ready to burn Sony at the stake for it, Sony is designing a sex toy themed motion controller, FF14 will be an MMO and that's all that matters about the game right now, and Uncharted 2 looks really sweet. Oh yeah, and God of War 3 isn't doing much of anything new, which we already knew from previous trailers.

Seems about right, with variances of opinions of course.

I approve the use of dildos in this thread

Is that dildos or dildoes? Or dildi?

Man, GT PSP looks pretty freaking hot. It's about time they started tapping into all that hardware. 60FPS too!

Interesting GT PSP video, but man was it painful to watch.

Even with the guide-line assists on, the user had no freaking clue about braking and accelerating around curves. Frustrating stuff, esp. when the guides are right there telling him what angle to take and at what speed.

Anyway, looks great.

So, if I use the dildo to do something to someone else, would it be dildam?

It's not just a dildo, it's a lightdildo!

Yeah ... that's not worth fixing.

I hotlinked the no hotlink image that took to task someone that did not hotlink.

Yay!

Miyamoto-san?!

Checking out the competition is always a good thing. I wonder what he thinks of it.

BTW, did anyone find any PSP Go impressions? I'm still curious to know what others think after handling it.

Checking out the competition is good, yes.

Impressions.

Thank you very much, Lard. The 1up video is exactly what I was looking for. The side-by-side views with the PSP 3000 and the iPhone finally provided the scale. It's pretty much the size of an iPhone. Very interesting.

Having all those buttons (music, screen brightness etc.) on the back seems really awkward.

The PSP is sortof victim of a catch 22-- It's got great graphics for a handeld but they suck by today's standard. PS2-like graphics already look horribly dated

I still believe handhelds should stick to 2d and niche genres

Regarding the price of the PSP Go, I think you guys are missing the point. There still exists ample stock of the previous model at retailers and pricing the new PSP at the same price point or near would have been disaster for retailers. I expect that when stock of the slim PSP is nearly depleted an announcement will be made regarding a price drop.

Further to the wish for a PS3 price drop, it is definitely coming since the reduction in monthly sales indicates they are close to market saturation for the current price point but unlike the PSP they can't announce it until stock of existing models (or the ones the PS3 slim is intended to replace) are near gone. The reason is that the PSP Go is handheld and the formfactor is a selling point, but the PS3's form factor will sit in your entertainment unit never to move an inch and thus the change in design is not much of a selling point (ie they couldn't release it for a higher price as it has little added/perceived value). They will wait a little longer and before the year is done you will get your price drop, but those expecting a $100 drop will most likely be disappointed to find it will most likely be only $50. If they were dropping the price of the existing unit only I'd say $100 would be a possibility, but as they are also going to drop the PS3 slim (I would hope at the same time as the price drop) they can use the slimmer design as value.

Anyway, I'll just sign this cheque and slide it across the table and you can write any number you like on there so that I can have The Last Guardian now.

Edit: Oh, and both Sony's and Microsoft's motion tracking tech will fail because unlike Nintendo it isn't standard and developers aren't required to support it. Whatever happened to sitting on your arse and playing games? I don't want to be waving my puny arms about the place, I'll get tired!

Edit #2: Also, FF XIV Online is not exclusive to the PS3. It is also coming to PC on release day and there is the possibility of other platforms in the future.

Edit #3: Sony was ok, but would have been amazing if they'd been able to keep the lid on both the PSP Go and The Last Guardian.

The only logical conclusion is a future PS3 exclusive, Dildo Hero.

PC but of course but 360? Unlikely...the possiblity is so small that it doesnt really count.

Speaking of PS3 and mmos with FFxiv coming the line ups for the console is growing pretty steady.

Agency, DCO, unnamed NCsoft mmo, and now FFxiv. There's was some speculation that they would announce EQ3 and i'm fairly certain if/when it comes out it'll also be playable on the PS3.

I'm not sure how that's going to play out. Going from having no MMO's to having nearly a half dozen.

I hope they figure out some way to try before you buy. With PC MMO's there's often a 1 week trial where you can download the game and kick the tires before you commit to a subscription. With consoles, what do you do? Walk into Gamestop and drop $59.99 for a hard copy and then test it? Hopefully they'll have a downloadable trial version on PSN.

I think that the console MMO front will be where the 360's paid online will become a big deterrent to developers. It's difficult to justify producing a game that only a fraction of the console's users would be able to play out-of-the-box and then only at their own expense. It just remains to be seen whether or not a company can properly execute a console MMO this generation.

You only need a silver account to play MMO's online on the 360.

the Last Guardian

Once it's out someone needs to spoil the game for me. If I'm not totally, completely assured the creature survives I'm not touching the controller. That trailer alone was effective enough to tear into my heart, the game could destroy me.
(It's ok if the kid dies though. Too many of them about as it is.)

PSP GO

The harware may not be quite as expensive as the Apple competition, but will the service match up? And I'm pretty sure the games for the PSP GO are gonna be more expensive by several factors. So the initial investment might not be quite as much, but in the longer run it's going to be very expensive to use.

Motion Control

So how are you going to move around in the gamespace with this? The Wii-mote has the nunchuck, Nathal can be used with the standard controller, but with this prototype the player is rooted in place.
Needs some people on board to point out the simple things.

FFXI on the 360 doesn't require a gold account. Maybe Squeenix doesn't want to bring FFXIV to the 360, but I'd be surprised if they couldn't.

Which, ironically, is exactly the opposite of the main consoles in that the 360 and Wii have a low initial investment, but are more expensive in the long run than the PS3.

So perhaps the pricing structure behind the PSP GO is Sony's nod to Microsoft and Nintendo's strategy in the console wars and acknowledgment that the majority of consumers care more about initial investment than long term costs.

Not sure how/why the only thing that is a factor is the cost of the Gold Membership.. but again like most things in life.. you have to attach value to everything.

Well $50 x 5 (years) = $250 + $50 (for 1 wireless controller b/c online is aparantly the way to go now but you might want to play w/ someone else in the same room) $300 = $600, right? or if you find the deal when it happens, 30 x 5 = $150 +$50 = $500 oh yeah. lets throw in 1 RROD repair at $100, while we're at it, so $600-$700.

And Wii has the WiiMote / Nunchuck / Classic Controller / Motion Plus / Balance Board / Host of Plastic thingies. 4 sets of all that would set you back (taking into account one mote/chuck w/ system) = $340 for 4 players + $90 for balance board + $30 (low average, probably) for plastic things + $20 for an SDHC card + whatever for GC controllers (not included) = $460 + $250 = $730! But you get to play with real people in the same room as you.

PS3 = $400 flat fee because you'd be playing by yourself.

Sorry, I couldn't stop myself.
