Homefront - Catch all

It isn't. Team Fortress is essentially a failure on the consoles, and it was the best example I could come up with. CS and Battlefield were multiplayer only PC titles, and in Battlefield's case then got SP campaigns when they went to consoles.

The only real success I could think of was BF1943 and it was a $15 downloadable title.

Ah, I missed the 'multiplatform' part. I was thinking about the Unreal Tournament series and Quake 3, which were multiplatform but hardly successful on consoles. Battlefield 2 had the Modern Combat port for PS2/Xbox/360, which experienced some modest success, but I think it's hard to call it mainstream until the Bad Company games. Even TF2 was attached to the Orange Box, which is not exactly hurting for awesome single player content.

Yeap, I was talking about really big mainstream titles that were MP only. I can't name one. Even Bad Company shows EA/DICE intent on getting a functional SP working hand in hand with the MP. In fact, BF3 will have SP.

Heck, even UT3 had a SP mode with a ton more narrative than UT99, and UT2k3/2k4.

Spoiler:

Not that it was any good. But it had cutscenes. And dialogues!

Harrumph!

I enjoy shooters and universally buy and play them for the single-player campaign alone.

Yeah, well, lots of things are possible on PCs that aren't possible on consoles. Getting into Idle Thumbs has opened my eyes to stuff like STALKER and The Last Express that just aren't on consoles.

I think there is a pretty big difference in Functional and complaining that it isn't any good.

What would be interesting (not sure if it is possible) would be to poll the Cheev's for single player completion in MW2 and rank 50 mp. To see those with both or only 1 or the other.

I may just love numbers though.

I'm a couple of levels into the SP campaign and I wouldn't write it off. The atmosphere is great and the mechanics are solid.

Of course if you go in expecting Stalker or a sprawling campaign you'll probably be sorely disappointed. Personally I'm happy with ~6 hours of SP (I'll be honest, they had me at Korean invasion of the US) and solid tactical shooter MP that isn't Call of Duty or that abomination of a Operation Flashpoint sequel.

You'll have to pry the BFG from my cold, dead hands!

This guy needs a monocle.

I really liked what I saw here:

The battle commander seems intriguing. It is, however, very MW like (not that's a bad thing in my book).

I had a chance to try out the multiplayer and there are a lot of things to like. In some ways this feels like like a throwback to Ghost Recon. The maps are much bigger than MW maps and feel more like a real place. There are lots of hiding places and plenty of room to flank around and shank snipers. Lately, tactical shooter MP maps seem to be like a playground designed to be symmetrical and for eliminating every camping spot.

Also, the ability to buy stuff during a match isn't new but its really well balanced and implemented here.

The thing I didn't like, as Ran mentioned, is that the armory for purchasing upgrades is quite opaque. The interface doesn't tell you how much something costs or how many bp's (battle points?) you have.

I like that in BC mode that if you become the high value target you start getting buffs for the more you kill. I was up to a quicker run speed the 1 time i was tagged it.

Trashi,

What other games have allowed you to buy things during a match? This is the first game I've seen it in.

CS for starters

Well let you buy between matches rather.

Yes, CS doesn't count. I'm interested in games that allow you to buy weapons, at any location, while you're still alive. Not between rounds or waiting to spawn after being killed.

It feels like there should be some, but I just can't think of any.

Shadowrun too...I miss that game, I wonder if there is anyone still playing that.

I'm still confused how to purchase upgrades in the armory. I now see where it tells me how many points I have but you don't seem to retain points after a battle and it doesn't tell me how much things like new perks cost.

That's hard to do with Modern Warfare 2 because there are no achievements given for multiplayer and no stats that I could find for how many rank 50 players there are. You'd need to look at a game that offers achievements for both online and offline play, like Bad Company 2. (I'm going to ignore games like Bioshock 2 that are shooters with multiplayer components because I know someone'll pitch a fit that a game like that doesn't count.)

Bad Company 2 doesn't have achievements on Steam, and achievement numbers across the 360 player base aren't publicized. However, on TrueAchievements.com—which is, granted, skewed toward players wanting to maximize their gamer score—69% of players finished the single-player campaign, 56% finished the single-player campaign on hard, 56% reached rank 10 in the multiplayer, and 38% reached rank 22.

Based on what I've read from developers tracking their own metrics, I would guess that more players will play through a game's single-player campaign but more hours will be logged overall by players in multiplayer. I'm sure there's a difference between PC and consoles.

BP points are used during the match only... You can choose what items you can buy with them between the rounds.

Hmm, I was interested in this one for the singleplayer, but I'm definitely holding off at this point. I distinctly remember some large claims about how awesome it would be, and it doesn't sound like it is at all.

Myself, I like fully fleshed-out SP games, with the option to go MP later if I really like it. MP-only is a tough sell with me.... they have to really treat me right to get me very interested. (ie, I have to be able to run servers myself, and there better not be any goddamn DLC that splits the community.)

Trashi,

SR, really? Man. I loved that game, but my memory of it (apart from how good it was) is hazy. I still see people on my friends list playing it occasionally.

EDIT:
Watching an SR vid, it looks like you choose what guns and magic to buy before a round, then you get to choose whether to use what you bought while you were in it.

If that's the case, it's not quite the same as Homefront, is it? If you earned mana as you got kills it might be closer to it.

ok, good to know Ran. I shall now return to spending the sh*t out of BP's in-match.

I'm really getting a GR vibe from this game. It feels like Ghost Recon maps and hit boxes with CoD player movement. Which is awesome. I'll have to see how long it will take me to get burned out on the maps and inevitable hacks that are sure to appear.

Its similar... You set up your character's 2 buy slots and you choose what you'll buy during the match. You earn currency with killing and capturing objectives. You're able to buy those items any time you have the currency for them.

My copy is at home and am excited about some MP tonight. Hopefully, tide me over until BF3.

Shame about the campaign but I was always getting this for the online components anyways.

I got this after seeing a bunch of people playing yesterday. You guys enable just by playing.

Wow! A lot of options for PC gamers! It's nice to see they let you controll so much including FOV

Here are my Screens of the option menu

A shame when that brings out a "Wow" reaction.

Everything except options to hold crouch and zoom rather than toggle. Come on!

After a couple of MP rounds I have to say that anyone who enjoys Battlefield will enjoy this multi.

Are the maps as large as Battlefield games? I'm a bit skeptical of the videos showing cramped maps and vehicles..Why bother spawning in vehicles if everyone has AV?
