I giggled.

Looking great!

I had hoped that the sp would have some replay ability with something like being able to play as a librarian or something in addition to a space marine. I also thought the space marine was broken up into assault marine, force commander, scout etc instead of playing a space marine that will turn into an assault marine at certain points in certain levels.

Details about the co-op mode have surfaced.

Co-op is indeed confirmed, though no details yet on what the mode entails.

However it will be patched into the game about 30 days after launch.

The developers are saying that the mode is not ready and they want to polish it up. Given the existence of the online pass system in Space Marine, many are speculating that this was a deliberate move to circumvent second hand game sales.

Either way, this seems like a poor way to market your game. Less than a month away from launch and they are still saying nothing about a mode that they were hyping months leading up to release. Not to mention that Gears 3 is launching two weeks after Space Marine with a newly revamped Horde mode included from the get go. I doubt the initial player base will still be around 30 days after launch, and will have moved on to Gears 3.

I'll still be picking up Space Marine on release day, but they certainly have fumbled the marketing on this one. A few of my friends who said in the past that they were picking this up have changed their minds and will instead be waiting for Gears 3.

Yeah I saw that as well. My hopes for a co-op campaign have gone from moot to non-existing. I imagine it will be similar to Last Stand, or as Dr._J mentioned hoard mode in GoW. I can imagine this being a ton of fun, but it's not quite as special as running through an orc army with your battle brother(s) wrecking hell in the name of the Emperor. I haven't pre-ordered this yet, and I will remain patient to see how reviews turn up.

I expect it to be a solid "B" grade, in which case I will likely be purchasing it. However if things look worse than that I might continue to hold off.

I'm in the same boat. What sells me on action games like this is the fiction, art direction, and aesthetics. The Gears of War universe has never appealed much to me, but there's something about the 40K universe that clicks. The extent of my 40K experience is Dawn of War II and browsing the Warhammer 40K wiki, but even though Gears of War has the same big burly dudes fighting big burly aliens as Warhammer does, there's something about the Emperor and the religious fanaticism of 40K that I find much more compelling.

Dr._J, I couldn't agree more. I wonder if THQ is forcing Relic to take this thing out of the oven before it's fully baked or if it is a cynical (and ill-advised) ploy to discourage buying used. I'm not alone in getting awfully sick of the trend to remove features and sell them back to you piecemeal.

A month seems a long time if this is an attempt to combat used copy purchasing. Without coop, the online community can only be so large. So unless deathmatch is so compelling, this game will be out of sight out of mind by the time coop comes.

I know what you mean. It doesn't affect me with Space Marine (no one I know shares my interest in 40K, so I'll be going it alone) but it's still an annoying trend.

I won't be moving on to Gears 3, because I don't give a crap about Gears. I'm really looking forward to Space Marine, co-op or no co-op.

PURGE THE INFIDEL!

Also I think it's more than a little cynical to accuse THQ of used sales paranoia. THQ are the good guys; at least my experience with their games has always been solid.

In this business environment, I don't know that any publisher has the financial security to be "the good guys" anymore.

It might be a little of both the used sales part and the polish part. A little more polish on a mode never hurts though, right? At least it's going to be free (well... should be).

As a PC gamer, Gears 3 really is rather irrelevant. Still looking forward to this, the versus multiplayer is what has got my attention, and it's looking pretty darn awesome. Plus it gets bonus points for being in the 40K universe.

I really hope Space Marine sells well despite these marketing hiccups. The guys at Relic have been excellent stewards of the 40k universe, from what I understand, and I'm excited to see what else they can do with the license.

A faithful recreation of Necromunda? Yes please!

I'm praying there is a good level of polish on this title and it does well.

Though what I would really like is a new Space Hulk.

I would preorder that right now, sight unseen.

I always thought Necromunda would make a superb MMO

Yeha Necromunda and Mordheim (possibly GorkaMorka) were always my favourite experiences. Blending Turn based strategy and RPG elements.

I don't understand why we haven't seen a Warhammer 40k armada game from them. You would think it would be right up their alley. And a good Fantasy Battles game. Although, maybe that is a separate license?

Yeah, the deeper I dive into the insanity that is the 40k universe, the more I'm loving how many opportunities for different kinds of games it affords. A few of us at Kill Screen are really into it right now and were recently tossing out ideas for the kind of 40k videogames we want to see. The highlights:

- Stealth RPG starring an Inquisitor
- Reboot of the canceled Gorkamorka racer
- Space sim/tactical RTS set during the Horus Heresy
- Imperial Guard tower defense
- Sisters of Battle game, aka LICENSE TO PRINT MONEY: THE GAME

As for Relic, I've heard Dawn of War III is already in the works. No surprise there, I suppose.

On a side note, how about an Ultramarines movie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DXzr...

I came here looking for some demo write-ups. How is it?!

It reminds me a lot of Republic Commando. Small team running through getting random ammo and powerups. For instance, you can stun opponents and then get health from them when you perform an "Execution". It isn't a tremendously complicated game. Your squad mates just follow along behind doing their thing. There isn't really any attempt at tactics. You run from point A to point B, press the "button" to do something, killing everything in your way.

Despite the lack of depth, it seems fun. It feels like the 40k universerse has been faithfully created in the visuals. The jet packs are a blast and the animations are entertaining. There isn't any way to block that I can see. You can either hit the enemy or dodge out of the way.

Just the same, I want to play more and I can't wait for the game release.

That may just pull me in then. Orks, Chaos in the Warhammer Universe. Just concerned the multiplayer will end up being repetitious after a few go's.
