Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

I'm still waiting on Relic's official details on what co-op will be. Come on guys, we're less than two months away.

If they're not selling it right now, teaching us what it's about, my guess is that it won't be much more than a bullet-point on the back of the box.

Or it's working poorly and they're trying to polish it before it's shown. Either way, it doesn't give me much confidence.

Amongst the hardcore, most consider DoW2's state at release date unfinished. Which I agree, if we take into consideration the There Is Only War update, completely reworking DoW2's multiplayer systems.

So it isn't unlike Relic to release half baked stuff.

While its been a few years (2nd edition), those hobbyists at TableTop were pretty nice people. I'd recommend swinging by and chatting with Phil.

If GW hadn't written my Genestealer Cult out of the game when they went to 3rd edition, I'd probably still be playing there. Not a good feeling to have labored to collect and kitbash and paint up an army, only to have it made unplayable.

Don't feel bad, that's what GW does, change the rules so you have to buy more overpriced plastic stuff. 4th Edition killed my Chaos Iron Warriors, and my love for 40k Table Top.

Looks like it will Marines vs Chaos and there will be three classes (or possibly more): Tactical, Devastator, and Assault that can all be customized.

I suspected as much when I saw the Iron Warriors skin up there. I can't imagine anyone who knows anything about the game would go through single player dressed like that. "For the Emperor" indeed. (Of course that does work for Alpha Legion. But . . . )

Well, I guess I have to pre-order from Best Buy... I must have that skin. I am looking at 360 or PC, which way is everyone going on this one? Sounds like a console port to PC, so 360 might be the way to go.

I'm going PC.

The developer's page says that MP details would be revealed on 7/20.

From the game's Amazon page:

Take the Battle Online - Form your own Space Marine squad or Chaos Space Marine warband and face off in 8 vs. 8 online matches. Gain experience and unlock new weapons and armor to customize the Devastator, Assault and Tactical Marine classes.

Edit: oops, hit Post too soon. Just wondering if this feature implies splitscreen co-op in multiplayer matches. From what I've read it appears the story mode is single-player only.

That was announced last month. In some of the earliest previews they mentioned co-op for the game. Relic still confirms it's in the game, but they've had nothing to say about it.

Com'on man, multiplayer and co-op are two very different things.

The Space Marine Twitter feed said that we would have details on the multiplayer the week of July 20th. I suspect any day now we will hear about the multiplayer.

Me, I'm wondering how many of the people who pre-order from Best Buy are aware that the Emperor's Children wear pink-and-black armor. I don't see the "typical" FPS player as the sort who'd be happy about showing up for a battle in pink armor.

Cool MP preview over at Gameshark.

Doesn't mention co-op (unless you count playing vs with team-mates). The customization options sound neat, but I wish it had a mode more developed like Section 8's multiplayer.

Goddamn, why isn't more people playing S8: Prejudice? Oh the humanity.

I swear that I heard them mention that there would be a co-op mode in addition to the versus. I tweeted them about it; if I hear anything back I will post here.

I really shouldn't have seen the MP video on Gametrailers... I really shouldn't.

"So, oMonarca, why do you wear a cardboard sign saying "I'm hungry and filthy, please feed and bathe me?"
"Them videogames..."

Let me preface this by saying that I hope I have to eat my words on everything I write here, and I will be proven wrong.

Alright, after watching this video:

Marine Customizer

I can say that I feel very let down by the state of this game.

When the narrator highlights "Online", the description says it is only a versus mode, nothing more. On top of that, it only has two bare bones versus matches. While the Marine Customizer is extremely detailed, it doesn't make up for lack of multiplayer options in this. I get the feeling that more substantial multiplayer options were being worked on and one of two things happened:

1.) They could not get them working and had to scrap them.

2.) They will be packaged up as DLC.

They have stayed so quiet on multiplayer for so long, and 6 weeks out for launch, we get this "big" announcement about a two mode multiplayer?

I'll still pick this up on launch day, but it seems to me that they have dropped the ball big time on this, and I am really disappointed. I guess I will have to keep dreaming about a co-op space marine game.

My pal Mitch Dyer loved the multiplayer: http://oxmonline.com/article/preview...

Wouldn't hold my breath for a co-op campaign, though.

I wasn't even hoping for that. I was hoping for a Last Stand mode like in Dawn of War 2. Seeing as how popular that is in DoW 2, I assumed it was a no brainer for it to be in Space Marine.

*Edit* As well, I swear I heard them say that there was a co-op multiplayer mode in Space Marine in an earlier interview.

*Edit #2* Here is the interview. They specifically say at around 3:50 in the video that it would have "robust" co-op and multiplayer offerings. This was only back in May of this year, so something must have happened between now and then.

Ah, gotcha. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if co-op did end up getting axed, as you speculated. And if further MP options were sold as DLC down the line? Wouldn't be the first time.

Wow - that actually sounds really fun to me.

- 10” Replica Purity Seal
- Pack of 25 Foil Printed Character Cards
- Hardcover Art Book
- Space Marine Soundtrack

It's Exclusive to THQ's store. 99.99$ for consoles, 79.99$ for PC (key registers on Steam)

I pre-ordered it. Anybody else gonna be tempted?

Hmmm, not really. The seal and the cards don't do it for me The artbook is nice, but doesn't justify the extra cash. I'd rather get a faction codex.

After the debacle I had with the CE of Retribution from the THQ store, I can say a definite "No".

Well, co-op seems confirmed(ish). Over at Eurogamer:

But it's co-op that I'm sure will see the most play in Space Marine, so here's hoping that the reason for THQ's silence on that front is for no other reason than they're saving the best till last, and not something untoward. I know I said before that Space Marines could feel no fury, but that might be cause for an exception.

But if they add Noise Marine weapons to the load out maybe they'll get drawn in by the irony and fill the voice chat with hair metal references! Oh god, that sounds awful!

Hmmmmmmmm... Maybe if the MP winds up filled with Noise Marines toting Blastmasters and Doom Sirens, we'll have the multiplayer experience that Brütal Legend should have been! I could live with that.

I'm tempted. Giantbomb has a quick look

That looked really fun. I am just wondering how it will play on the PC with the different attacks.

I'll third that. Honestly, I was fairly uninterested in what Relic showed--or didn't show for that matter--before this QL even though the concept itself is one that appeals to me.

It uses the Darksiders engine! Sweeet.
