Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

I played through on hard and I remember the end of that game being infuriating. The unbalance gets really bad near the end and I was very dependent on the sniper rifle.

I am the armored fury of Mankind, the fist of the Emperor's wrath, Adeptes Astartes. That is what I felt like during a good game, and the multiplayer was exceptional. I miss the Drop Pod Tuesdays, sigh.

And it puzzles me because all this player commentary I've come across highlights how you don't need cover and that you can wade gleefully into combat like an insane bad ass. And that simply isn't the case at all. You would be blown to absolute bits most of the time. And executions are practically useless most of the time because the animation makes you incredibly vulnerable and you can die so quickly. Were they all playing on easy or something?

That's what happened to me. I enjoyed the game up till the very end. I actually think I might have been on the last mission and just quit then uninstalled.

A while back I recorded a playthrough of Space Marine on hard difficulty. I intended to make a Let's Play out of it, but I never got around to it. However, I was able to put together some highlights of what I remember to be the more difficult fights. This shows the approach that worked for me. I wasn't a Shrinking Violet Marine by any means - I used cover when necessary, and I jumped into big melees when I could. I also favored grenades, explosive weapons and AOE Power Axe and stomp attacks.

Fights shown are from:
* the end of chapter 3 after you get Marksman Mode
* the horde fight at the end of chapter 5 after you get the Power Axe (which was also the demo chapter released before the game - even with all the times I played through that demo, that fight is VERY hard)
* the fight at the end of chapter 7 when you meet up with your squadmates after fighting your way through the tunnels under the Manufactorum
* the fight at the doorway to the Inquisitor's laboratory near the end of chapter 9, and
* a fight involving both Orks and Chaos in the middle of chapter 12 as you make your way toward Lt. Mira's outpost.

I didn't upload this to show off how awesome I am, because honestly, I'm not all that great. That should be obvious from how often my shots miss and how often my melee swings whoosh and fail to connect. Still, despite being relatively medicore, I was able to enjoy the game on Hard difficulty without having to retry many fights (except the last one in the game... damn!).

Also, sorry it's only 720p30, but I did that to save on disk space. When I recorded these I didn't have much HD space available!

I was always a fan of the Thunder Hammer, personally.

Yeah me too. That thing is so much fun.

I am not, especially when you are thrust into tons of situations where you need ranged weaponry and you are left with only the pistol because the game doesn't provide much ammo.

Sorry for being a filthy skimmer.
This is on sale for nine bucks, and I thought I'd buy it.

Questions:
Can you turn off camera shake? Or how much control do you have on camera and effects?
Can you go first person, or are there mods?

Thanks.

Nope, none, and nope.

There are a few mods, but most of the ones I saw are of the "turn your space marine into an ultimate badass" variety, when IMHO, he is already an ultimate badass.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2

No release date. Very pretty release trailer.

I still miss Drop Pod Tuesdays.

An insta-buy for me.

Shame it's being made by Saber Interactive. They have a long history of bad games and sub-par ports.

The first one also had great multiplayer so I am hoping it is added and expanded on in the sequel along with new factions ie like they introduced chaos and not just Orks in SM1.

Day 1.

I bet it's day 1 Gamepass.

SM1 was a "solid 7" back when it came out and I remember it not really making any waves. Perhaps it's the echo chamber of the internet but it feels like there's been this pent up demand for a sequel all these years. I'm glad for the announcement and really hope it is at least as good as the original. Keep the core gameplay, pretty things up, add co-op, do some epic level & scenario designs with the Tyrannids, and I'll be happy.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has a newly announced release date of 9th September 2024

3 player coop, sounds fun.

Lack of a pvp mode is still a bummer

Seriously? I didn't realize that. PvP was awesome in the first one.

Yep, and it spawned a bunch of new games from it. Hopefully that will continue. I keep hoping that since they keep not saying anything about it they'll surprise us, but i doubt it at this point.
