Random thing you loathe right now.

Wait, your eyesight got better after the surgery?!

They can add a corrective lens during the surgery. Basically permanent contacts. My dad got them with bifocals built in. He said the whole thing was painless and was impressed by the docs speed.

Oh that's amazing. I'm totally gonna ask for all the bionic CyberPunk upgrades! Thanks!

Today I finished the virtual Commander’s Challenge: a 5k, a 10k and then the half-marathon.

For the past 11-ish years, I have done the Canada Army Run. First just the half-marathon and then the 5k and the half-marathon.

As a soldier for 33 years, my father was so incredibly happy to see the people of Canada coming together to race and support Canadian soldiers and their families. Every year, in the afternoon after I would finish, I would get a text from my father asking me how I did.

Sometimes I would answer “it was easy” and sometimes I would answer “it was hard, but I managed to finish.” But it was just physically hard. I never understood what people meant when they had problems pushing through mentally to finish the race.

Today I did.

With about 3 kms left in my half-marathon, I realized I would never again get a text from my dad asking me how my race went. I would never again get a “nice job!!” or a “Bravo!!”

I am glad I was on a treadmill, because I didn’t need to be able to see through the tears to continue running.

I miss you papa.

Yeah, that was stupid of me. Sorry about that everybody.

Road rash.

I was just starting a run yesterday evening, failed to treat wet fallen leaves with sufficient respect, and wiped out.

Yeah, that was stupid of me. Sorry about that everybody.

I don't even remember what it was, or my response. Apologies from me as well.

Don't worry. It was an inappropriate tangent.

Why cant Twitch a website with Amazons basically infinite resources behind it operate a half functioning website> There may be very good reasons but I mean even the scroll bars are bad.

You ask this about an Amazon site? Amazon, who never met a UI they couldn't "improve" by algorithmically testing layouts and flows?

Amazon web pages are not built by designers. The component pieces that make up the web page sort of are, but the overall design is vetted by almighty mathematics.

Indeed I should expand this loathe to all Amazon sites and Apps. I really just wish the streamers I watched used another platform, from what I have read the free prime sub thing is what drives them to stream there though.

A lot of it is inertia. The big competitor to Twitch in the livestreaming space is YouTube, and YouTube has been playing catchup with Twitch on a lot of things for years, especially when it comes to monetization. It seems like they've largely reached parity, but once you've got your presence established on one platform, you need a pretty compelling reason to try to get your audience to follow you to another one.

Kick is starting to gain some traction due to a payout split that is heavily aimed at the creator as opposed to the platform, but one of the founders really f*cked up over the weekend which is causing some issues.

(Note - TW for the article involving potential sexual assault)

That shouldn't have come as a surprise to anybody. Kick is just the streaming version of all of the right-wing social media sites that get created by people that get banned from Twitter. Having gambling money to throw at streamers doesn't make them the good guys.

Kick is also much more lax in general about moderation, so I would be wary of trying to build a community over there when the threshold for banning toxic behavior is much higher. Twitch has a lot (a LOT) of issues, but their community features are still second to none, and they've been making efforts to give you more control over moderation and temporary lockdowns during potential hate raids or other abusive behavior, as well as cracking down on things like gambling streams. Amazon isn't really showering them with money at this point, unfortunately, but there do seem to be people working there who care.

This won’t probably mean a lot to most people here, but you should recognise the tree in question. You’ll also need to excuse the god awful local news website I’m about to link to below.

Last night some absolute bastard chopped down the Tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrians Wall in the North of England.

It’s the tree Kevin Costner goes hundreds of miles out of his way to visit in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

There aren’t that many iconic trees in the world that would have global recognition. This is one of them. And someone decided to chop it down. Words fail me.

Maaaan that's really messed up.

I just checked and it has its own wikipedia page - sadly already in the past tense.

That is absolutely horrific. Why? I don't get it.

It’s about a 45 minute car journey from where I live. I’ve walked past it many times

If they find the people that did it, they are going to need to be put in protective custody, that much I can tell you. People in these parts and across the whole of the UK are very cross indeed.

From what I read in novels, Vulnerable Persons wings are not as protective as they could be... True or false? I know in the US they amount to even more horrific solitary confinement in many prisons. US prisons are way more violent than UK ones, I think.

I’m not sure that’s quite what I meant!

In the UK the police will usually arrest you, question you and then let you go on bail while they complete their investigations, for non-serious, non-violent offences. Protective Custody here would be more about keeping them in a police cell rather than releasing them for their own protection. This is the sort of thing that makes people very angry and likely to form very angry mobs outside police stations.

They’ve also just arrested a 16 year old boy in connection with it as well. I fear this is a stupid stunt or bet, possibly TikTok related.

Oh damn, if there is a Tik Tok of this, people would go into a frenzy.

Thanks for clarifying for an ignorant American.

First world problem but I have really bad choice paralysis for my next game. Baldurs gate sounds great but a bit intimidating to a D&D novice like me and like a million other games I have as possibles. Probably just fire up slay the spire instead…

Baldur's Gate should not intimidate you. Check out the "Absolute Beginners" video I linked in the game thread, and maybe others like it. It's an RPG. You'll get the system as you go along. It's extremely forgiving in Story Mode, and tons of fun. Best game ever, maybe?

Yeah honestly BG3 is probable the easiest way to get into DnD. Since it does a lot of the work for you. Highly recommend.

As a D&D novice myself (I only recently just played my first-ever campaign with some friends) I can say BG3 was really easy to get into and follow what's going on. I'm playing at normal difficulty too, not using any guides - just flying by the seat of my pants and enjoying every minute of it.

You filthy enablers have worked your magic and BG3 is downloading away.

Watch a few early explainer videos and you should be fine. I was.

There's some goddamn spiders living in my car somewhere. Anybody know how to get rid of them without torching the car? I can't really google that without getting bombarded with pictures of spiders so I'm not really keen to do that.

Fill your car with scorpions. They'll eat all the spiders.

You're welcome.
