Random thing you loathe right now.

Finding out an old game is quite dead. Got the urge for tribes ascend. Something in my head triggered memories of skiing and flag caps. Turns out the normal servers are dead and even the community ones are empty. I thought there was bot matches but turns out I was wrong. Surfed around that one map and just quit after a bit. It's normal that it happens but sorta sad?

Oh man, I almost loaded that up over the weekend when looking through my games list. I was a big fan of the original Tribes but didn't quite click with Ascend, and thought maybe I should give it another shot.

Another sad one for me is Dreadnaught, which was a team-based role-ish PVP type game in large space ships. It was a really neat idea, looked amazing, but ended up dying due to a really poor progression system that was linked up to a monetization system (at least that's why I stopped playing, can't imagine I'm alone there). Servers are getting shut down permanently on the 18th.

My co-worker is freaking unbearable today and it's only 1:30. I get in and she asks if I called in sick yesterday because I was hungover, then turns around and asks for help logging in (a daily occurrence). Then, she complains about how little leftovers there are after a lunch meeting and compares me to a junkyard dog because I cobble together a couple of tacos from the Chipotle the partners didn't eat. After that, she randomly gets into a heated (and loud) conversation with her daughter on the phone which goes on for 10 minutes before she gets up to take it outside. But it turns out the only reason she did that was because it was time for her lunch break. So there she goes, walking down the hallway shouting at her daughter the whole time.

No real problems. I just needed to vent.

She wants to get with you. Make it clear you are spoken for or go out with her. If you go out with her make sure you have another job lined up for when things go sideways and you are called into HR.

lol

That makes so much sense.

So I have an electric scooter that I love. I am addicted to them as I've upgraded 3 in 9 months.
I have learned an awful lot about safety on them.

But Monday, some idiot on a bike flew around a blind corner the wrong way, on the sidewalk at the base of a bridge. So I know this is a blind corner and I take it very slowly on a daily basis. (there is typically a homeless person that chills there so it is especially dangerous)

Despite my precautions, I have to jam on my brakes and upend my scooter, sending me forward to the ground. I wear a motorcycle jacket and full face helmet. I did not have my gloves on so my hands are cut up and it turns out I broke my elbow minorly. Doc says with a sling it'll heal in 1-2 weeks.

That cyclist was a piece of work for sure but they are lucky to not be in the hospital with major injuries. She was not wearing any protection and I have 100 lbs on her plus another 50 lbs from my scooter.

When riding my scooter, it is my number 1 nightmare that a cyclist is going to come flying across an intersection in front of me. Sure enough, it practically came true despite having even less time to react

I am having difficulties with basic things since it took out my dominant arm. I am comforted though that she is unscathed.

Subject of loathing: a specific elected judge in my mom's county.

So since before I was born, my mom's gone by the name her dad called her rather than her birth name. Always has & always will. Late last year, her & my dad picked up legal counsel to start taking the steps to legally change her name. For months they've been putting together paperwork, making sure everything is good & kosher. Today was the last step of my mom & her lawyer getting everything together and presenting it all before her county judge in a court of law.

So she & the lawyer get called to the stand and swear under oath, then go through a small list of basic questions, confirming her identity matches with everything on her papers. Easy peasy, no problem.

Until, after about 3 minutes and exhausting the list of questions, the judge deems that, b/c of a DWI charge my mom racked up near a decade ago, it is "not in the best interest of the county" to approve her name change, and the motion is denied.

Her lawyers knew about her record, but they couldn't think of how that would be a problem. This was supposed to be a formality. The lawyer didn't have the paperwork ready for a motion denial, everyone but the judge was caught off-guard by this.

B/c WTF?! You really think a sextagenarian who's changing 1 of her 3 names is gonna break out of the state and live a crime-filled new life under her wild and befuddling alias?! Or are you a heel flexing about how "tough on crime" you are?

My mom's never been perfect, but we've made strides to mend our relationship as we've gotten older, and she's wanted this for forever. She messed up years ago, but the most she broke was a fence & she's paid her dues to society. She was dressed her best for today and we walked away from that courthouse with nothing to show for it. This judge has my utter loathing & contempt.

I'm usually weary of Microsoft-bashing whenever Arstechnica reports on the latest big Windows 11 update. I know, I too want to drag files across apps, and while I don't care about the location of the taskbar I get the criticism. But you don't have to post it every single time, you know...

That said, I loathe that after the last big update Microsoft made Edge the standard PDF reader AND browser, reactivated the useless private Teams edition, reconfigured my standard sound outputs - even overwriting my custom naming, and reinstated the search bar again.

Yeah the goddamn search bar. I already hid that and suddenly it's baaaaack. On both home and work computers this week, blah.

I'm still over here using Windows Classic Shell to make modern Windows behave as much like Windows two decades ago as possible.

I hated the search bar in the start menu when it first got added. After a few years of using it though. I don't think I could ever go back to the old xp menus.

Now Cortana and that weird sidebar on the right can just go away forever.

Oh God I realized they are going to put their knockoff chat gdp bot in the start menu at some point...

The two versions of Teams is a royal, incredible PITA!!

f*cking contractors who f*cking install things without looking at the directions because they've done it a million times and don't need to look at the official guidance. And I know they do this because my dad has done it forever.

Anyway, our sink was leaking from the top of the disposal. So I go through the process of finding the manual (something I always do because there's a very good reason that I got a degree in CS and it's that I'm a complete disaster when it comes to doing anything manual labor/home improvement related) and disconnecting everything from the sink only to find that it wasn't even installed properly in the first place. The fact that it took ~6 years before it started leaking was a miracle in itself.

Yeah we looked at some video review for this kids riding toy the other day. And the unboxing is this doofus who throws the instructions to the side and then starts jamming pieces together. Lucky it didn't snap as he tried to force some parts in there. And no way I would let my kid on that particular one.

Hell I really miss instruction manuals with video games. A little backstory, a control diagram, some tips. I loved them

Have you played Tunic yet?

Ooh wishlisted.

It's on Gamepass, if you swing that way.

Ha! Prepare to get sucked in.

Spectrum

They have once again jacked up my bill, saying a promotional credit ended. I guess they raise prices and then grandfather you in for a few months before hitting you with the big jump. Either way it sucks.

TMobile 5G is my only realistic option at this point. I'm not going to pay $80 for shoddy 70 down from spectrum.

Maybe when I call to cancel they will offer something reasonable but mostly I'm just tired of their sh*t

I hate not having options / competition. Sometimes the retention staff can offer new discounts, though I've found I usually have to pay a month or 2 of the main rate before I can get them to budge. Sometimes changing tier of service is enough to trigger offers of discounts. It really seems to come down to the person you're speaking with.

This damn thumb(?) injury.

It started 3 months ago when playing particularly difficult guitar riffs, I assumed I was just tensing up too much. Took a few weeks off, no improvement. Got some scans, no signs of arthritis or ligament injury. Sucked it up and booked into physio who confirmed de quervain's tenosynovitis (or "gamer's thumb"). Anti-inflammatories, rest, massage, and I'm doing all of the proper stretches and exercises, no improvement. Now I'm starting to think it's more of a forearm tension thing, but it's just not getting better.

I can't play guitar, I can't use a game controller, I can't paint miniatures, and using a keyboard is starting to hurt too. I'm thankful that I can AT LEAST remap Switch game controls to function on a single joycon so I can comfortably play most JRPGs.

I have Resident Evil 4 and God of War Ragnarok sitting here taunting me, and I just want to let off some steam playing guitar...It sucks.

Have you thought about a Monoprice fighting stick controller? What about an Azeron controller? Extremely minimal movement with those.

I've definitely been thinking about my fightstick! I haven't played shmups in a long time, but that should be safe assuming it's a thumb and not a forearm injury . I realised after a brief stint playing Guilty Gear Strive online that my fighting game days are long behind me, lol!

Never heard of that other controller. Interesting! Thanks for the suggestions.

Speaking of injuries, getting old sucks. There's always something going on with me these days that was unfathomable only a decade or so ago. Either I'm on a diet because I gained too many extra pounds eating a quarter of what I used to, or I'm dealing with a hangover for drinking a quarter of what I used to, or I get out of breath trying to do a hike that I remember being a literal walk in the park in my youth.

Right now the loathe is random injuries slowing me down. After months of rehabilitation failed to improve things, my doctor gave me a cortisone shot to treat my shoulder bursitis. Things just started getting back to normal in terms of my workout routine and just not obsessing about how I carry things, and low and behold I now have tennis elbow. Put me out to pasture because I'm done.

Attention craving farting exhaust pipes on little cars.

I have 12+ hour lecture/lesson for work. Have to split it up an hour a day at a time. How I handled the 8 hours of school as a kid I don't know anymore.

Lumpy went to the emergency vet at midnight and mom came back around 5:30 am. He has pancreatitis but the good thing is we are able to run the tests to see if it’s a common cause or a more uncommon cause. We’re all nervous of course but he should be back home Sunday some time. Edit: sorry for the pings, had a typo that was bothering me.

Quote is not edit. Oops.

Lumpy bounced back quickly and will be coming home sometime later tonight.
