Random thing you loathe right now.

You’re right. If it hadn’t have washed out I might have had to have said it was a new trend in sponsored jeans.

Isn't that just most modern name brand clothes? I never understood why some people want to be walking billboards for Nike or ADIDAS or whatever brand.

How else are you going to know I paid too much for this T-shirt?

Not exactly random, but currently really loathing drunk drivers at the moment. I have a 1998 Volvo V70 that my uncle game me a few years back. I fully admit this thing is falling apart, but I only drive 10 miles per day roughly so it's not like I need something insanely reliable or comfortable... I've been working on it to get it to pass emissions, which is due in about a week. So far I've replaced the gas cap, the O2 sensors, and cleaned the barometric sensor which seemed to clear most of the codes out. I was going to drop it off today for a local mechanic to see what it would take to clear out the last error code (large leak).

Last night a guy leaving the bar down at the mill near my house blacked out coming down our road and went right into the rear driver's side corner of my car. My rear brake light and signal were smashed up, a bit of damage to the trunk, a bit of damage to the bumper, and it broke my muffler away. But of course... this is a 24 year old car with over 200k miles on it. KBB is like $300. So as soon as I saw the damage I knew it was going to be totaled out.

The other driver, to his credit, knocked on our door to tell us. But I'm pretty sure mostly to try to avoid calling the police, because he was so intoxicated he could barely talk. He kept telling us how he had insurance, and he'd pay for it, but I have absolutely no patience for drunk drivers. During questioning we found out it was his second DUI as well, having already been caught on our street driving drunk 2 years ago. The guy is mid-20's, works at Whole Foods, and drives a 2019 Charger... SMH. I just... It really blows that I basically lost my cheap transportation because that guy decided to be stupid.

On the plus side, Geico (other guy's insurance) is so backed up they won't be able to assess it until the 18th, so I get 5 days of a car rental. I declined it at first, and then figured that's probably worth more than the payout I'm about to get for the car, so might as well milk it a bit.

Nicely done

For a company that actually does a pretty good job of letting me communicate with everyone else, why is every means of actually interacting with Verizon itself utterly terrible?

If you figure it out, you will become a rich man. Or a slightly more aggravated person.

Good customer service isn't a profit-making center if you're in an oligarchy. What are you going to do, go to another company with worse products and equally bad customer service? Welcome to the free market!

The one consistent thing I've seen is that the companies that are the worst at communicating, are communications companies.

In other news, my car got towed this morning to the shop where the inspection is supposed to take place. And I just got a call that they don't accept Geico, so I have absolutely no idea where to go from here... I mean, I didn't set up the tow, I didn't choose this place, I don't particularly care because it's not going to be repaired, and it's just insane that Geico sent it to a place that doesn't accept Geico... and they're not even my insurance, this is the insurance for the other guy.

So yeah... today's going to be a good day.

So, just went down there to sort things out. Geico didn't tell the place it was getting dropped off, I guess they just assumed it was OK. The place accepted it and are going to bill Geico for storage on the lot until the inspection is done on Monday.

I figured given how well this was set up, I should probably hop into the rental car area (same location) and make sure I was good to swing by in an hour or so to grab that. The reservation was set up for me to pick the car up on Monday... Lot of f*cking good that does me.

I'm just... so frustrated right now. Someone hits my parked car because they were being stupid, I'm losing my car, likely won't get any real money for it, I'm now having to juggle one car with my wife, and bumming rides from my boss, while fighting with someone else's insurance who don't give a damn about me because I'm not their customer, and I feel absolutely powerless to do anything about any of it.

Have you contacted your own insurance company? In a situation like this, it's best to have your insurance dealing with Geico, not you directly.

Yeah, they are the ones that sent my info over to Geico. I could call them back and try to get them to fight about it, but I'd imagine by the time everything got sorted out it wouldn't do me a ton of good anyway. My wife works mostly from home so we're not really stressed only having one car, it's just not convenient. We're not even sure we're going to get me another vehicle yet. So it's easier to vent about it here than actually put up a fight for it when I know I'd be spending a lot of energy fighting it and get very little return for it... as I probably wouldn't even use the rental much.

Insurance company lawyers *love* standing up for their clients. They are aggressive and often bored. Turn them loose on the situation and see how quickly GEICO offers to deliver your rental to your house (prompt that as something you'd like, who knows, it might work!).

Not really my personal loathe, just things I wish weren't happening.

Was talking to my uncle today... Apparently there's a string of just seriously sad & unfortunate sh*t going around. His neighbor's niece, 19 years old, was out on a lake with friends as a passenger on a jet ski. She apparently fell off, and her hair got sucked into the intake of the motor. Unaware of the exact nature of the predicament, the driver of the jet ski circled for a bit looking for her. It wasn't until he had rushed back to the dock to get help that he noticed her... The news said she died later at the hospital, but the cause was drowning.

In addition, my uncle's wife's niece, who was opposite me in the wedding party of my uncle's wedding many, many years ago, recently found out her husband had colon cancer. They operated to remove a significant portion of his colon... Only to discover inoperable liver cancer.

My boss's husband was recently given three months to live after discovering liver cancer. He died about 2 weeks ago, less than a month after diagnosis.

All of these people are pretty far removed from me, but damn, what a sad f*cking world this can be sometimes.

My nightmares are taking a toll on me. I’ve already had some trouble with anxiety and depression, and now every time I sleep I have nightmares where I or a loved one dies or is injured. I’m tired of this. I just want a pleasant dream for once.

Have you tried Lucid Dreaming? When Michael Meyers kept stalking me in my dreams as a kid, I taught myself to dream of better things.

Not quite at the stage I can do it intentionally. It seems some are stuck at “bystander mode” and some I can … hijack? For lack of a better word. I just haven’t quite figured it out yet. And most of the time I’m caught up in the dream thinking it’s reality. Sometimes it can take me over an hour after waking up to realize I’m not still dreaming.

Second this it's been a week of high heat and high humidity. It's pretty awful.

Paid a contractor to do our roof and siding. Roof was done last year. Paid half of siding. No response for several months now and their website is no longer up, called again today and the guy said he didn't know our contractor and he did siding and gutters. The company's been around for a while but seems to be vanishing before my eyes. Emailed again. Facebook messaged again. I really don't want to have to get lawyers involved.

Hm are you sure the roof was done? That's crazy

You could also contact local TV news or newspaper. A lot of times they will call to investigate and just that fear of publicity will get a response.

I know the roof was done. I watched them do it and went up there. It's not perfect but it's at least as good as I could have done (I'm not a pro but i've helped with 5 different homes and a garage).

Cedar Rapids had a major derecho in 2020. There are hundreds of people with the same experience. Lots of contractors who agreed to do work, took payment, and never did anything. We were actually pretty lucky as we got our 20 year old roof done. As for siding Iowa has a law that requires insurance to replace it if you can't match the siding. Ours is aluminum from somewhere around 1980. It still looks fine and we only lost half a dozen pieces (which I've temporarily patched). Honestly, it doesn't really need to be done. We do need our gutter replaced but that's not much. I'd be quite happy if we can get it painted for what I have left (though that's unlikely). What's odd is that this company has been around for about 10 years doing roofs and solar panels.

I plan on calling insurance (it's actually their money) and then probably finding a lawyer.

I googled a favorite quote from a favorite author, to show it to somebody, and found that every one of those "clever quotations" sites gives a mangled version of the quote that reverses its meaning.

It's a tiny thing, but lord, it's annoying on an intellectual level.

I heard a church group sing Imagine with the lyric changed to "And one religion, too" and felt white-hot rage.

What did they do with the 'no heaven' and 'no hell below us' part?

Don't remember, I think I partially blacked out from overwhelming anger. Probably skipped that verse.

Slammed my foot (by accident) into the leg of a chair.

Wasn't sure last night if it was just sore, or worse.

Woke up this morning to swelling and a nice-sized bruise.

Looks like I broke another toe...

I was also at a church that had a group of kids sing a version of this! The song opened with “Imagine there’s a heaven, it’s easy if you try, with hell down below us, and god up in the sky.” I’ve never liked the Beatles so I thought it was funny and cringe more than infuriating.

It’s 1am in these parts. Mrs Sorb and I have just spent 40 minutes chasing a mouse around our dining room because one of the cats decided to bring in a plaything for the evening. There’s a very peculiar sound of silence from our cats when they do this - we know instantly what they are up too.

Of course the mouse isn’t stupid and makes a beeline for the massive dresser that’s full of the really posh china that was inherited from Grandma (both of them) so just pulling it out isn’t a great option unless you unpack it first.

Still it’s out now and still breathing when we caught it and let it go. The cats however are distinctly dis-chuffed having spent the 40 minutes locked in the kitchen watching the ongoings from the door. They’re still going around downstairs trying to find it.

I’ll be repacking the China in the morning.

I don't know how many fruit flies I've killed in my apartment today. Probably more than 15. I think I'm close to getting all of them though.
