Random thing you loathe right now.

I loathe all the fake accounts that sign up for GWJ and pretend to join in discussions, only to drop links to whatever it is they are spamming. I loathe it almost as much as bad coffee. Fortunately, I found this awesome site that sells great coffee beans from all over the world, and you should definitely check it out!

My 12 y.o. son is sure that he and his friends, here in Greece, are the true orginators of your "coffee" site.
The disdain in his voice, that I just would *not* understand the sophisticated nuances of said coffee...

Funny...AND loathsome.

My wife is seeing a dermatologist and allergist for her terrible case of hives.
It can get so bad that it leaves bruising. She gets further anxiety because domestic violence protocols have her repeatedly being asked if I hurt her. I am totally glad those protocols exist and are persistent but I want my wife to get relief above all else. So something meant to help her that only creates more strain is a loathe on top of loathe

My iPhone 7 has had a long run and is finally dying.

I want to replace it with something as close to the same size as possible. I do not want to shell out for a 13 Mini... but I also can't find an SE 2 in stock anywhere.

What about an 8? Identical to the 7 with slightly better camera.

I swear by Apple refurbs too. Comes with a new battery and warranty.

I have no idea what happened, but I checked again last night and Apple had the phone I wanted in stock. So a new toy is on its way to me, and this no longer belongs in the "loathe" thread.

The USPS. I've got three packages in flight right now and two of them are in limbo at a place a few hours or less away from where they should be delivered, with no updates for a couple days now.

I realize it's probably not the staff, considering that the Trump crony heading up the thing is deliberately sabotaging it, but I think the next thing I'm sending is going via UPS instead.

Think I have to avoid Reddit a little. Every now and then there's a post of people being asshole or worse.

These tend to just make me angry and self righteous. Not a healthy state of mind but it makes you feel good. Realizing that's a bit dangerous.

I think I understand that whole Facebook rage hole people fall into now.

Some work is being done on the building I live in, and it requires sawing through concrete. This work includes my own balcony. In addition to the dust that somehow found its way into my apartment (not a huge quantity, but still), the noise is constant and annoying and makes me happy I have noise canceling headphones. I do wish I had a job and an office to go to during the day though. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my cats, who are going crazy at the moment.

(I should point out: I'm glad the work is being done, my balcony (and, I assume, the other ones) was usable but not in great shape, but still.)

Dump.
All.
The.
Socials.

All of them. Including Reddit. Delete every account you have. Your life will be measurably better.

GWJ is the closest thing to a social media outlet I have left, and I've been this close to dumping that too a bunch of times.

Yup to all of that.

GWJ, reddit, and imgur are my socials. And only here do I have an account. After that last post I've changed my phone so I can't read the last for most the day. Not cold turkey but better I think.

Find myself fiddling with my hands instead of opening Reddit.

All of this pandemic and coup politics has me so on edge that my wife refused to allow me to read my email for one evening. I am helping out some family with technical issues and started screaming and swearing at my monitor because I've just lost it with having to repeat myself and the stubbornly ignorant requests. (note: one of my strengths is my patience)

So my wife said "no more emails for the rest of the night". And it worked. I was able to get sleep. (I called out sick for the first time at work because I had exhaustion from lack of sleep from stress; I slept for 15 hours)

Nah, you're Redditing wrong!

Subscribe only to Subreddits you're interested in, and then use the Apollo app to browse your 'Home’ (your subs only) feed. That’s it. Stay away from the 'Popular' (Home Page) feed. Mine is all tech, cooking, photography, and chock full of wholesomeness like Aww and WhatsWrongWithYourDog to name just a few. I can give you several tens more uplifting subs if you'd like.

You can sort by chronological and there’s no algorithm showing you increasing levels of garbage like Facebook.

I've seen so many of my subreddits turn bad when they got a little bigger and attracted a different crowd.

That's when you simply click the button to unsubscribe and forget about it.

Never really wanted to actually make an account but might be worth trying. For now I'm weaning myself off it. Added another limit to the total amount to view in a day, and with that I'm feeling better. Still have my youtube and manga to read/watch. So it's not like I'm bored. Last time the internet got to me like this was the last presidential election.

Had to do the same for my mom and politics. Got here to at least limit it to just a newspaper. At one point it was affecting her sleep.

There's got to be some platonic ideal number for internet groups. Just enough people for it to be interesting. But too few before it becomes a cacophony of trolls.

I'm coming to the conclusion that that number is zero.

Reddit is my internet addiction writ large unfortunately. It desperately needs a ‘block subreddit’ function, but I also understand why it doesn’t have one. When Reddit is being useful it’s one of the best sites on the internet for hiding helpful advice and recommendations, or for discussing stuff with like mind individuals. When it’s being a toxic cesspit, my word it operates at a level of toxicity not seen outside of 4chan.

I’ll check out that Apollo app, sounds like what I might need.

Another nice Apollo feature is IF you choose to browse the Popular or All Posts feed, you can tap the ellipsis menu on a post and select 'Filter Subreddit' to hide that subreddit from the feed indefinitely.

I find the problem with Reddit is not Reddit itself, per se, but my own lack of discipline. I know I can just sub to things I'm interested in and stick with that. But the temptation, when bored and tired and slightly down, is always strong to just flip over to the Popular tab and enter the forever-scroll fugue state.

It's kind of the internet equivalent of mindlessly stuffing yourself with junk food, I guess.

Apollo sounds good, but is apparently iOS only.

Reddit Enhancement Suite allows you to block subreddits.

Are they arguing over who loves you the most?

Fake ads that lead to scam web sites claiming that your PC is infected with viruses. My wife's uncle has been bitten by those a few times, including again a few minutes ago.

Malwarebytes and Avira and Firefox all have protection against this sort of thing...

Fool me once...

Just to be clear: He hasn't actually fallen victim to these, but he does panic and call me. And for that, I loathe.

Having my balcony jackhammered at 8 in the morning is... not great.

Edit: And someone sent security to my unit to complain about the noise. It's not like I can do anything about it.

Ah. One of the professors I support is like that. We have made a lot of changes to information security systems over the past year and just about every time he comes to me like "Is this real?" He was also one of the people who decided to setup his 2FA (we are using Duo from Cisco) using his home phone number.

I've been reading these forums for too long I think. The first thought that popped into my mind when I read this was "Sounds like the title for Chuck Tingle's next book"
