Random thing you loathe right now.

Christian Bale does a singularly terrible job as Howl in Howl's Moving Castle. He takes a character who is romantic and enigmatic abs makes him sound lifeless and bored. He nearly wrecks the dub all on his own.

Heheh. Yeah, I totally agree with that particular dub which I've tried briefly. I recently watched Only Yesterday which is amazing. I got my mom to watch it, and she went with the dub which has Daisy Ridley doing the main character. It seemed okay but less than perfect.

That's too bad. I just picked up the Miyazaki collection. My wife hasn't seen any of them, and I want her to like them, but I'm not sure she'd be willing to watch the subbed version right now (baby's only a week old), so I was going to go with the dubbed, but bad VO is why I usually don't do that. Boo.

Most of the Miyazaki dubs are okay. I don't like Bale's work in Howl's, but otherwise the cast is good. The only dub I think is bad is Mononoke, but that's as much because of the poor translation as it is the voice acting.

Didn't Mononoke get the English version written by Neil Gaiman? Back when I had it on DVD, I don't think I ever listened to it, but I probably used those subtitles. It also had a more literal translation as a subtitle option, and comparing the two was interesting.

Miyazaki/Ghibli movies in general should either go to the random love thread, or have a thread of their own. Now I want to hunt down a copy of Castle of Cagliostro.

While that movie is good, you should REALLY just go watch Lupin the 3rd Part 4. It's incredible and probably better than that movie and the original material and anime series that it's based on from way back when. It's all available to stream on Crunchyroll, and it's a masterpiece. So good! I still haven't quite finished it because I don't want to run out of episodes.

Whaaat? I didn't know they made a new series! Yup. Going to go watch that.

"Is that, like, a six-pack you got in there, or...that, that's not an ab. If that's the singular, which makes sense. That 'ab' is actually a boil or infestation of some kind."

I think the anime series over the years were really hit and miss (I haven't gone back and watched them because I've heard that), and Castle of Cagliostro is it's own thing which was probably the best thing until now. All I can say is this new thing is pretty much perfect.

Hehe Thanks, swipe keyboard.

Been there, done that. I am sure I am not the only here who would be happy to discuss things if you want.

Service call for the A/C that I expected to be $500 - loathsome enough on its own - turns out to be "hole in the coil, can't be fixed, replace the whole unit, probably $3000". Gotta find the money I suppose- it's not gonna get any cooler going forward.

I succumbed to buying The Knick: Season 2 for $25. Season 1 was just so good, and there isn't a way to rent it or pay a more reasonable fee just to watch each episode once.

On the plus side... it's soooooo good.

The pain killer I have to last until I have my surgery causes anxiety, depression, mania and mood swings, in addition to the the regular side effects. Sometimes more than one of the above at a time. ><

sh*t, that sucks! If it had happened one week earlier, I had three spare window units...but I gave them away. Have you considered getting another estimate?

An historic old town just up the road, Ellicott City, was devastated by flooding last night, the worst since a hurricane hit the area in 1972. Six inches of rain in two hours (over a month's worth) produced a 13 foot rise in the Patapsco River, and wiped out the downtown business area. We were at the local hospital this morning, for unrelated reasons, and they reported 3 dead and 2 severe injuries just to them (others may have gone to different hospitals, as it's on a county border). Some folks are listed as missing but I think that's due to the fact that the death total has not been released publicly. This comes within 18 inches of the worst flooding seen in the city.

The Weather Channel has three video reports here. Please note that one of them shows at least two people being swept down a street towards the river.

The way the town is set up, the Patapsco forms the top of a T, with a small but fast river called the Tiber running down parallel to and under streets and buildings along Main Street. Both flooded catastrophically. Some wooden buildings sustained major structural damage, from the pictures. The old stone buildings mostly were washed through (many of them are late 18th and early 19th century construction). Roads were first stripped of asphalt, then the old bricks, and then scoured deeply.

The oldest US railroad also runs through the town, and it's still in use. I expect it will require repairs too.

It's really horrible because the businesses along Main Street were seeing a boom this summer, due largely to new investment in restaurants and shops, and of course a whole-hearted acceptance of Pokemon Go. Luckily this happened relatively late at night (after 10, I think). If it had been earlier, many more people would have been killed or injured as crowds are common on Saturday nights, and people would have retreated into ground floor shops at first. Now, instead of a boom, it's going to be a year or more recovering. Luckily it's an affluent county and businesses will come back.

We're waiting for the quote from the salesperson and to talk to someone from MassSave about rebates & financing. It's just the downstairs zone, and a lot of trees cover that part of the house, so it's not as bad as it could be. But it might also be more expensive to fix since we'll need to get one of the more efficient models. I'll get another install quote before picking one though.

MassSave is freaking awesome. Good call.

Facebook, what on EARTH makes your 'recommended' algorithm think I have even the remotest interest in liking the Facebook page of Milo. Seriously.

YouTube has the same problem. If you watch a video about, say, social justice or feminism you get a bunch of "recommendations" for misogynistic "men's rights" channels. Presumably because users from the latter visit the former to watch/downvote/post horrible comments, so the algorithm goes "Oh, so if Y likes X then X must like Y".

I've had to install an extension in chrome to block a bunch of those channels, and more keep popping up.

I like to think that somewhere there's a Gamergate supporter who is really ticked off that YouTube thinks he'd really love the new Feminist Frequency video.

The good news is there is, because it's direct corollary of all the sh*t-vids in my suggested for.

Thanks to being unable to lift my arms over my head all day on Southwest Airlines, I am presently unable to lift my arms over my head without severe pangs of pain.

I have only irreparably damaged 5 devices in my six years working IT here and 4 of them were yesterday. Was moving 4 All-In-One touchscreen PCs down to our new building using a utility cart like this:

I hit a rock with one of the front wheels and the whole thing toppled over. I'm not in trouble for it or anything (everyone understands that sh*t happens and it is far from the worst thing someone has done around here) but I still feel like an idiot for doing it. I used the cart instead of a dolly because I was worried the screens might get scratched on a dolly.

I've toppled machines off carts exactly like that one. The wheels will stop dead on the slightest obstruction. I dropped a couple monitors when one of those carts ran into half an M&M and tipped over.

To be fair, if I had multiple johnsons, I'd probably do all kinds of crazy stupid things too.

We have an entire thread for that.
