Yesterday I decided to downland a N64 Emulator and some roms and play some good old games. I did not want to dust the N64 of and blow into some cartridges so I thought I would would give the emulator a go.
The first game that immediately came to mind for me to download was F-Zero X. I have so many memories of me and my friends playing that game rocking out to the awesome music and super fast and dizzying tracks.
Once the menu screen popped up I got the chills and immediately was into the game again. The speed and twisty turns are still as fun as they ever were. For me, no other racing game (aside from F-Zero GX) has ever mad me feel I was going to insanely fast.
My runner up was of course Goldeneye which still hold up surprisingly well.
So what is your favorite N64 game and your runner up?
First to say Ocarina of Time, definitely won't be the last. Goldeneye was also great, and Mario 64.
Mario Golf. My friends and I put so much time into that game.
Second would probably be Mario Kart. Mario Kart 64 is the peak of the mario Kart series
I spent a ton of time with Super Smash Brothers. Having 4 players on the N64 was awesome.
Second to the it was probably Mario Kart.
Zelda and Goldeneye. I can't decide between the two.
Zelda: Majora's Mask.
Close runners-up:
Mario Kart 64
Super Mario 64 (truly a genre-changer)
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Zelda: OoT
Banjo Kazooie (just a fun, fun platformer)
I still have my N64 and pull it out to play with a few friends periodically; it may still be the best party console ever. A few highlights if you can round up others:
Mario Tennis
Super Smash Brothers
Mario Kart (again)
Goldeneye
I really liked Ocarina of Time, but I only got a few hours into it before I got distracted by something else.
Goldeneye was killer for its time, but it was mostly cool because I could deathmatch with my non-PC-gaming roommates.
So I think I'm going to have to give the nod to Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Minarchist beat me to it, but Majora's Mask. It's my personal favorite game, and it knocks the socks off of not only The Ocarina of Time but nearly everything else released since then.
I too enjoyed Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina (couldn't get into the time aspect of Majora's Mask). The game that I spent a lot of time on was Turok 2. Yeah the fog was annoying but we loved the various weapons in VS mode. Played a lot of that.
Conker's Bad Fur day is still fun.
Paper Mario is oddly fun as well.
Aww jeez, I can't pick just one.
Mario 64
Ocarina Of Time
Mario Golf
Smash Bros
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Mario Tennis
Goldeneye was the dog's danglies, but it's not aged well at all.
Pilotwings 64 was brilliant, and holds up surprisingy well.
Ocarina of Time, of course, Mario 64, of course.
You could mark me down for the usual classics (Mario 64, OOT, Majora's and Goldeneye, specifically), but I think I actually spent more time playing the AKI wrestling games, specifically WWF No Mercy, than any of those. All sorts of hilarious match types that were scalable from two to four players, tons of character customization possibilities, and decent gameplay for the genre that is still unmatched, even by current-day wrestling games.
Aside from the standards already mentioned I would add Battle Tanx. Loved it.
Goldeneye is number one for all the obvious reasons. Other than that... i played the hell out of Blast Corps and Shadows of the Empire. Blast Corps was such an original idea. Here is a bunch of different vehicles, use them to destroy everything.
Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Goldeneye, Blast Corps, F-Zero X, Smash Bros., Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64. All fantastic titles that rank among the best of that generation. It's a pity the N64 suffered from a dearth of quality rpg's, if it weren't for that it would easily be the top console from that generation.
Some second-tier greats (only in that there are better titles in the top echelon, these are still top-notch games) that shouldn't be missed include Mario 64, Majora's Mask, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Rogue Squadron, Perfect Dark, and Turok 2. I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting right now.
The N64 and the PS1 combined into an incredible era that marked a tectonic shift in console gaming, imo.

Those pioneers and their pop-in 3D graphics....we owe it all to them.

Yup! The generations since then have been more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Refining and extending what was pioneered in that generation of games. I specified console gaming since pc gaming had already started in that direction by that time.
Paper Mario is oddly fun as well.
Seconded. I'd forgotten about that one.
Me & my friends loved some WWF wrestling game that I forget the name of, but it was awesome, and had La Parka and other popular characters at the time. Best 4 player game evaaarrrr =)
Star Fox 64 by a long shot, and I'm always surprised more people don't feel similarly, although I don't deny the genius of the Zelda games. I do agree Mario Kart 64 is the best of the series; I haven't enjoyed any of the others as much.
Star Fox 64 hands down.
Running in second is a tie between Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Cart.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on an N64 and Mario64 on launch day. I distinctly remember being totally blown away by Mario, so I have to include that.
Oddly, I'm one of the strange birds who actually thought Turok 1 was a better game than GoldenEye, but then again, I never was big on multiplayer.
I also have to give a nod to Tetrisphere. To this day I think it's the best Tetris sequel to date.
Forsaken, Starfox, and Blast Corps for me. I could never get Body Harvest at retail, and the emulators I've tried never ran it properly.
I totally forgot about Star Fox ( i know... I'm horrible). That was our number 2 multiplayer fix after Goldeneye with my brothers and myself.

There are a lot of really great N64 games (I can't believe nobody has mentioned Beetle Adventure Racing!) But when I think of the one that i've sunk the most time into it would probably be Starfox 64. Goldeneye definitely runs a strong second though.
Killer Instinct Gold. THE greatest button-masher fighting game there is. Primarily because I had figured out that it was a total waste of time to try and learn the moves and you'd get more done just by mashing buttons before my friends had, and I totally pwned them every time.

I loved that game. I used your button-mashing strategy, which worked pretty well until my friend who owned the game started reading up on combos and I discovered that this game allows for rounds that are entirely comprised of a single chain of moves. I never did master the C-c-c-c-combo Breaker, either.
