Yeah, not looking to start an edition war. If I'm going to open that can of worms, I'd be selling him on Burning Wheel or Dresden Files or something.

I forwarded the recommendation of the Red Box to him, since that seems to be a low-cost way for him to experiment with it. I'll hopefully be having a conversation with him later about who he expects to be playing, etc. Advice on where to go after the Red Box would probably also be good, knowing him he's going to ask about that--what books/accessories would come next, etc.

Right around the corner is going to be summer 2013 at the earliest. My guess, based on the state of the play test, is that it will be summer 2014, for the 40th anniversary of D&D.

Play whatever excites you.

If he likes the Red Box, then you want the Essentials books. You only need the three core ones. Then you'd likely want a DDI subscription. Actually with a subscription, the player book(s) are kinda unnecessary - we haven't touched ours since subscribing. If you have a regular group to play with, you may want to split the cost of the books.

in my group only 2 or 3 of us have a subscription and I set my password to a non secured one to give to them so the can login, use the builder and then I can print night of before heading over.

Stop with your sensible ideas right there young man!

FYI the essentials red box characters aren't exactly the same as their "real" essentials counterparts.
I'd say download the free quick start rules for a really inexpensive entry point.
Or the 5e beta.

Hey, anyone looking to get rid of 4e books? My gaming group has just hit paragon path and the DM has opened up basically everything to us, so we're on the lookout for new stuff. I am looking for the 4e Forgotten Realms player's guide (for multi-class swordmage) but would love to see what you all have to offer.

*looks back at his shelf of 4E Essentials books and The Madness of Gardmore Abbey module, only used twice and the later never touched*
I doubt I can pawn them off around here, being stuck in the middle of DSA and D&D 3.5 land (read: Gernany).

Acetate i would recommend picking up a subscription to D&D insider, that gives you the online tools which has the "almost" up to date errata and book releases online.

You have Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Heroes of Forgotten Kingdoms? I would potentially be interested in those. Send me a PM if you'd like to discuss!

I only have Fallen Lands, the Compendium and the DM Book (and the Module), but shipping these would cost at least if not more than simply ordering them off Amazon.

Ah, I see. I will probably turn to eBay next, but an Amazon order could be in my future.
