Honestly can't tell if this was a joke or not (and the edit has bumped the timestamp so now I'm less sure about timing), but I believe kudos are due to EverythingsTentative for bringing the true spirit of International Talk Like a Pirate Day (9/19) to life here yesterday.

FYI posting requests for pirate information is against the Code of Conduct.

Someone else pointed this out to me, and as much as I would love to take credit for being that clever...I ain't that clever. I am just looking for my pirate daddy.

Since Usenet has legitimate uses, I think it is ok to post this: Getting Started with Usenet.

Just stay away from alt.conspiracy.black.helicopters.

Last time I looked at the CoC it had a part about no l33t sp34|<, and I was like lol, leet speak :cryinglaughing:

What? I had no idea I could have been violating the CoC that way this whole time!

No l33t, but internet sh*tpost language I'm cool with in moderation, so long as things are kept positive (no punching down).

Legion, your location pains me only slightly.
Re: Code of Conduct. Yikes. That needs a refresh for sure

To be fair, the last time I looked at it was a long time ago (still a long time after leet was a thing ). I had a look now and it's updated appropriately.

P.S. you're not listed as a mod Amoebic, so that might need an update.

What's this Usenet? I Googled it and found what they call a logical map. Seems very illogical.

That's because the spacing has been lost. That's intended to be viewed on a wide printer terminal, with 256 character lines (ideally). It should look much more like this one from about 2 years later.

Also useful knowledge: "ihnp4 bangs everyone". Ah, the good old days.

The 1337 5|?34|< ban was probably one of the critical nudges that shaped the site's culture...sixteen years ago when gaming forums were more plagued by people who refused to write in complete sentences.

I'm still sad that so much of Usenet has been devoured by spam.

I’m still saddened by the fact that when people get their own megaphones, they use them to tear down others, rather than building a newer, better society online. #bitter #jemesouviens

I remember I made a brief foray (back) into usenet maybe 10 years ago - I found that someone had taken notice of a thing I made, so I posted to thank them for their compliments. And..... they told me off for top-posting.

So, let it burn, I say.

Netiquette is local, really. Trolling, propaganda, harassment and so forth are ubiquitous, in contrast.

I remember someone posting a link to a sort of guide to being a gentleman, at GWJ for sure but no idea where. I'm looking to improve my dressing skills, get styling tips and get a general sense of how to improve the way I present.

I tried Googling, but of course got pages and pages of links to online stores. Can anyone help me?

edit: I apparently bookmarked some links back in the day! Art of Manliness, a link to Slater (store, but with general tips), and some LifeHacker articles. Any additional info would be most welcome, or even which sites to be avoided because internet.

Do I want to know the story behind my new golden icon??

I'll start you off, Stevintendo... Wienerbomb! Mr. Site Google will take it from there, I suspect.

Thanks! I actually reread Minarchist's Employee profile as he rang a bell as our in-house style guru (every community needs one). I wonder where he's at these days...

Yes you do.

Original original thread here.

What have you tricked me into doing Robear?

I did say "site search" lol. Not full Internet Rule 34 search...

For the music streaming services do any allow you to block or instant skip a artist? Spotify use to have this but it looks like they removed it.

You can block songs and/or artists in the Spotify mobile app. Go to artists page and click the top right three dots, and then "don't play this". I haven't tested to see if it sticks, but the option is there.

On the desktop app, it appears to only be individual songs, and only in the "Made For You" auto-generated playlists. Then again, on desktop, you can tell it what songs / albums / artists you want to play, and in what order with the free account.

I'm not seeing the option. Below is a picture of what I see on the artist page in the mobile app.

This is what I see on my Galaxy S9 when I tap on the 3 dots in the top right of an artist page:

Different OS?

Man I thought I tried it on my phone but I guess not. Yeah the option is on my phone. Bye, bye chris woman beater brown.

Glad you got that cleared up. And now I know more about some random person than I ever would have otherwise.

Does any one use a product for elderly family members where you can get a message on your phone if they fall down or something and need assistance? I see one where it has a chime but I'd rather get a phone message etc

We use this and have been happy with the service so far.

Maybe there is something similar in your neck of the woods?

If you're not opposed to an Amazon Echo, trueheart78 made an Alexa skill that'll text and call him if his wife needs him, with varying levels of urgency supported. He's probably made it open source.

Thanks!

Is this a pun?

Setup: We were having dinner at BJ’s pizza tonight. My son ordered a 9” deep dish pizza for himself. It came out in a cast iron dish which was placed on a fancy little stand.

I say: You know what your problem is. You’re putting the pizza on a pedestal.

Was that a pun?
