Cricket: More Than a Game

Well played sir.

Shane Watson has referred it to see if it really is out.

Let the carnage begin anew :/

Australia is going to have to play 1000x better tonight for us to have even a hope...

Just when we thought DRS couldn't get any worse we get that.

I just don't even...

Good start for the Aussies - but as usual in this fair city, rain is expected over the next four days.

Poor decision for Khawaja, but then there were millions of them in the pre-DRS days. But can someone tell me why snicko isn't part of the system ? Is it deemed not to be accurate enough ?

UPDATE - Umpires obviously felt sorry for you, gave you one back.

Smith was stone dead - another shocker. However, Broad getting run over by the karma bus is funny.

This will be a problem for a while with 8 of the 12 ICC elite panel from England and Australia, this crew are the only ones they can use and they seem to be out of form.

Yeah, Smith got away with one there, but you could argue that's not DRS's fault. Like Broad's non-dismissal, just the team not having any reviews left after a bad umpiring decision.

The Khawaja one was an absolute shocker. I have no issue with the umpire giving him out, but I can't believe the DRS upheld the decision. Utterly ridiculous decision.

@davet010: Snicko is not used as it takes too long to clean up the audio and sync it to the footage (apparently).

Apart from that, a good day for the Aussies.

The DSR set-up looked ridiculous today. Both sides where charged for unsuccessful referrals in cases where the call on the field was wrong but somehow not wrong enough to be overturned. In the case of England the correct-but-unsuccessful referral also cost them another wicket.

I've always been a fan of video replay in sports but the way it is implemented currently, with so much weight being given to the call on the field, I think cricket would be better off without it. There has always been a element of luck, particularly with LBW's, all the current system really seems to do it highlight that rather than actually fix it.

As far as the actual cricket goes it was a great day for the Australians. It was very encouraging to see a number of batters knuckle down a bit and be content to play each ball on it's merit rather than looking to force runs.

So the Aussies have come to play after all, good to know.

Yeah... we just needed some confidence. It's criminally low at the minute.

Annnnndddd

It's gone.

Reckon so - I live about 4 miles from OT and it's been pissing it down since midnight.

A lot of rained out Manchester tests....

The lunacy of conducting a major international sporting event that essentially requires 5 consecutive days without rain in Manchester has often been noted.

2 down. Fingers crossed the rain holds off.

Hey, we've had international swimming galas here.

And the Commonwealth Games. Where it hardly rained at all. Until the torrential downpour during the closing ceremony.

I like Manchester, I really do, but if it will plonk itself on the windward side of the Pennines it's going to get pissed on on a regular basis and that's just poor planning.

Blame the Romans. They sited us here.

Oh well, it was good to see Australia show some fight and really have England on the ropes. I firmly believe that if there was no rain on that 5th day, that we would have rolled them.

If they can take that kind of fight into the last 2 games, then I would think a win is very likely. And a win is a very good outcome at this stage.

(Also good to avoid 10-0)

Is it just me, or are the umpires in this series actually terrible ? They seem to be incapable of making good decisions, and seem to lean on technological second looks even for decisions which are totally straightforward. I couldn't believe they wanted another look at Smith's run out at OT, even when it was obvious that he was miles short even in real time.

Yeah, I feel like the umpiring this series has been particularly poor, although it's a bit hard to say if that is because of DSR, and every wicket (or non-wicket) being reviewed for the TV audience.

As far as the actual cricket goes it looks like Bell has done the job in this match as well, he has been absolutely fantastic this series.

Yeah, was looking good there for a short while, but Bell has been outstanding.

Happy for Chris Rogers though.

The more I see him play the less I understand how he has missed out on a spot in the side the last 5+ years behind players like Watson, Cowan, Hughes and Warner. He just looks a lot more like a test opener than anybody else we have had recently.

That said I still think it's crazy that he finally gets his chance at nearly 36 year old in a team that should really be looking to build for the future around some young talent.

Not just you. They have been utter pants. Tony Hill should be dropped he is in such poor form but there is no one else to bring in.

Very glad to see Andy Zaltzmann's nickname for Ian "The Sledgehammer of Eternal Justice" Bell has stuck.

Even the umpire isn't sure about that one, Maq

Guy on a forum I was on, at 5.02pm

"Stuart Broad is a useless c***. FACT"

Obviously a keen student of the game. Still, he does follow Derbyshire, who once went something like 4 years without winning a county championship game at home.

And at 7.45pm

"Today's performance just shows how inconsistent he is. Capable of far more than we get."

Obviously them 200+ test wickets cut no ice.

I think it's probably the Daily Mail's cricket correspondent. Or the numpties on Sky who were saying 'Australia are totally in control of this game' after day 1, when they had yet to bat.

Oh dear Aussies - oh did I say oh dear? I mean HA HA HA, that was bloody brilliant.

Few thoughts from a watch of the highlights.

- Ryan Harris is head and shoulders above the other Aussie bowlers. I just wonder whether Watson's groin injury was a key moment, as it reduced Clarke's options, particularly towards the end of England's second innings.

- Usman Khawaja...what sort of shot was that, mate ?

- Despite what the DRS said, Haddin's dismissal was awful. The standard of international umpiring seems to have gone backwards, quite significantly.

- England's fielding was sloppy, in fact it has been average for most of the series. Rogers had more lives than Pac-man, and Prior's double fluffed run out at the end just put the tin hat on it.

An excellent game though, roll on the next one. Hopefully the selectors will bite the bullet and give both Jonny Bairstow and Jimmy Anderson a rest.
