Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Nobody Wants This was great. Enjoyed every single minute of it.

Uprising was great but seems to be the first of two or a trilogy.

Hoorays for JC, KramNesnah and DoveBrown
In a rare move for Netflix “Nobody wants this” has actually been renewed for a second season.

The Tomb Raider animated show is bad bad BAD. It has a horrible mischaracterization of Lara. It’s fine that they went younger, but she's a completely different character from the games. She’s uncultured, uneducated, and constantly needing to be rescued by her friend because she just cluelessly rushed into danger. She has a ton of emotional angst which plays as bad teen melodrama. We couldn’t get beyond the second episode.

I never played Metroid Other M, but I imagine the complaints people had about Samus would also apply to this version of “Lara.”

My understanding is the animated series is taking her from the Lara in the “Survivor” trilogy to the Lara in the classic games. Or that’s the intention, anyway.

I wonder if it’s just a budget thing. There are no special effects. It’s all filmed in LA as far as I can tell, mostly in people’s (very large) houses. The cast is pretty small. This must be one of the cheapest scripted shows they have done?

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

I was really looking forward to The Shadow Strays.

Director/writer Timo Tjahjanto has essentially made a spiritual successor to his own The Night Comes For Us from 2018, except he's swapped in a bite-sized 17-year old teenage girl for the lead role. It's the same movie. The runtime is crazy long for the simple story it tells and the amount of plot armor heaped onto our heroine begins to strain all credibility as it dives into the third act.

As with Night, the film approaches the level of slasher horror. There are many crazy-violent set pieces: think stabbings, impalements and chunky giblets caused by gunfire. The choreography is generally very good but some scenes suffer from being too dark and by the end the constant barrage of action numbs the drama and suspense of the fighting. Also, see: plot armor comment above.

Unlike The Night Comes For Us, The Shadow Strays tries to set itself up for a sequel. I'm not terribly down with that idea. But at the same time, eh, why the hell not?

Kubo and the Two Strings was pretty good.

I adore Kubo - I think it's absolutely brilliant

I love how Kubo opens his storytelling session in the village near his cave. I can't think of another preamble that goes harder than this one:

If you must blink, do it now. Pay careful attention to everything you see and hear, no matter how unusual it may seem. And please be warned: if you fidget, if you look away, if you forget any part of what I tell you, even for an instant, then our hero will surely perish.

I need to give it another watch. Now I have renewed motivation to get my Xbox and projector talking 4k to each other again...

Good advice for the viewer. There is so much that is revealed in the background that is super easy to miss if you aren't actively looking for it. The movie holds up so well to multiple viewings as you notice lots of details you missed the first few times through.

Watched Fresh 2022 and liked it. A young lady is a having trouble dating until she finds the perfect guy. The guy is not perfect. This is billed a a horror comedy. I didn't find it funny. I thought it was rather dark.

Not exactly Netflix content, but I figured anyone reading this thread might find it interesting:

Netflix shuts down 'AAA' Team Blue gaming studio, amid gaming shake-up

Stephen Totilo wrote:

The studio, also known as team “Blue,” seemed poised to break the mold of what Netflix is doing in gaming. Early hints about the team’s work suggested it was pursuing a big-budget multi-device strategy, signifying the ambitious edge of Netflix’s initial mobile-focused expansion.

They had hired some heavy hitters, too. Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, Joseph Staten from Bungie and 343, God of War art director Rafael Grassetti.

Watched the first episode of Territory which is set on a cattle ranch that is, reputedly, bigger than Belgium and run by a deliciously f’d up family. It has the feel of a classic drama like Dallas (but less cheesy) that could, if backed by those involved, run for dozens of seasons.

When I spend so many first episodes of a TV series willing myself to be into a show it was refreshing to be onboard from the first moment.

I thought you were describing “Rivals” at first, but then I noticed I was in the wrong thread. If you love yourself some good Dallas style shenanigans, you should definitely watch that, too. David Tennant is a delight as always. (In Europe it’s on Disney+)

Thanks. I’ll give it a go.

Season 2 of The Diplomat is great, and annoyingly short (6 episodes). Not as good as the 1st season, but close.

Me watching Season 1 of The Diplomat last year: "I like it, but the plot's a little crazy."

Me watching Season 2 of The Diplomat this week: "I fully believe this crazy shit can actually happen."

Hot Frosty comes out soon. So excited.

I caught part of the auto-preview thing of this and...two actors from Brooklyn99 as...police? My teenaged kids and are probably in just to catch glimpses of them...

Arcane season 2. Just as amazing as the first season.

Yes, it's incredible. Cant wait for the final episodes next week!

I’m on episode four and have no idea how they are going to wrap the series now that they’ve introduced a bunch of new characters.

Cobra Kai, Season 6 Part 2

I guess they're not getting invited back to Barcelona.

Perfect telly, basically takes that genre and goes, how can we hit every beat perfectly? Sure it's never going to have the depth of Game of Thrones, The Wire ect but boy is it entertaining from start to finish. But give me this over the dull table talk of season two of House of Dragons any day of the week.

Oh nice. I've loved it all so far. I for sure feel like at Season 6 we are starting to run out of steam but honestly when Cobra Kai was first presented to me, I thought "no way in hell does this work" but it did.

Kudos to everyone involved who took it seriously and didn't just treat it like the nostalgia cash grab it could have been.

They've been very adamant that this has been planned as 2 seasons from the start, but even after episode 6, I have no idea how they're going to wrap everything up. I hope they can land it. I've read that the last 3 episodes are going to be a bit longer than the first 6, though I'm not sure if that is confirmed.

Regardless, I've been enjoying it immensely. It moves so quickly and is so densely packed with detail that I will probably watch it all again soon to catch some of what I've missed. Plus, I need to soak in more of this mind-blowing animation.

While waiting for the rest of Arcane to be released before I start in on it, I decided to check out Murder Mindfully. It's a German series about a defense lawyer who deals with drug dealers, criminals and other unsavory elements while learning mindfulness and living in the moment and reconnecting with his daughter. I've only seen one episode so far, but it's really great so far.

I know we should be praising shows here but I really tried to see Hard Target 2 through and just couldn't do it no more. It really is straight-to-video garbage at its worst.

Which is a shame because I like Scott Adkins. I often see internet comments about how he's so underrated and hasn't gotten his big break yet, etc. etc. Either through the fault of his agent or himself, he's just got to choose his roles better. He has been in higher profile movies in recent years but of the ones that stick out in my mind, those were villain roles: Ip Man 4, John Wick 4. Or I see him in bleak, anti-hero mode like in Avengement.

I really like his YT channel where he interviews action movie icons and luminaries. He's got the charm and the martial artistry but for some reason he's forever stuck in B-movie land. Anyway, that's my random Scott Adkins rant. I'm going to go rewatch JCVD's Hard Target now, which isn't even that great of a movie either...
