Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

I think they already changed the name of the next one to not be part 2. Pretty weird.

But yeah the refresh of MI after the terrible 2nd one have all been very good. One of the few recent things I actually own

Finally got around to watching Top Gun: Maverick (now available in the UK) and it was stupidly, annoyingly good.

I prefer to call it Top Gun: Top Gunner, as in:

This one is top gunner than the first one.

But is it the Top Gunnerest?

Watched Damsel and thought it was great. More people burn to death than in Avatar the last Airbender. Eleven fights a space dragon from the expanse. It makes some people cry because they think its woke. Their tears taste great. Also its the real ending to Game of Thrones.

How did you know the name of my Kenny Loggins cover band?

That’s after you split from Kenny Loggins cover band Top Gunneria

Top Gunneria is the name of your sex tape.

It does make Kenny Loggins songs sound way more risqué than intended.

I know I'm in the minority here, but the most recent MI is by far my favorite. For me, it was smart, really well paced, and super entertaining through the whole thing. And, it's a kinda, sorta loose adaptation of Neuromancer.

I don't really understand why it underperformed at the box office.

And they brought back Kittridge!

It underperformed because everything has since 2020. Cinema has changed.

I'm sure it killed on streaming. That's where I watched it.

Top Guneria is a lethal STD
You get it from doing cowboy (unclear is reverse cowboy is also effected) position to many times in a row.

I watched Past Lives (it’s on Netflix in the UK. Hopefully it’s also on where you are.) Such a beautiful film.

FYI: The final episodes of Physical 100: season 2 are up now (at least in the U.K.)

It’s a great finale. Really felt for each of the final 3 eliminated. Winner clearly deserved it.

I’m approaching the finals now. Another brilliant season. The sportsmanship and concern for fellow competitors regularly hits me in the feels.

Thoroughly enjoyed 3 Body Problem. Looking forward to the next season (which I hope has been ordered). I think I will pick up the books after watching the first season.

Also really enjoying The Gentlemen. The contrast of super polite people doing very un-polite things tickles me. Well written and Guy Richie has a knack for making good looking things.

On and off again I am sort of enjoying Warrior as well. Some episodes are really fun and good and some are... less great. The fighting is spectacularly choreographed, though.

There is a ton of good stuff coming lately which I'm looking forward to watching. Bodies, bodies, bodies, Spaceman, Tourist S2, Damsel, Southpaw, Great Pretender, etc. Just not enough time to watch everything!

Still slowly working my way through Physical 100: Underground. It is classic reality game show junk TV in the best ways, just like the first season was. I really like the design of these challenges.

Funny that for the second season in a row the "star" contestant is an ex-MMA athlete. So far this season I haven't really seen the contestants with MMA backgrounds have a proper showdown. I remember there was a duel between Sexyama and another MMA bro in S1. Well...whatever it is they did - a combination of arm slaps and grapples - was a big letdown but everyone on the show gets so incredibly hyped about every little thing that happens during the competition that it's impossible not to get swept up in the excitement.

I also may have mentioned this a few months ago but Blue Eye Samurai was awesome.

This is the same folks who produced Strike Back and Banshee on Cinemax before they got folded in. I'm really surprised they added an additional season and how popular it seems to be becoming. It's been out for 5 years or so now. Yea the fighting is good, but the story as you pointed out is an up/down affair.

Having enjoyed the Parasyte anime I’ve watched the first episode of the live action series Parasyte: The Grey. I’m glad to report that it’s as wild and as smart as the anime and has excellent special effects.

Have you watched the Japanese live action movies? I liked the 1st one a lot. The 2nd one not so much.

Oh no I haven’t. I’ll seek them out. Thanks.

Edit: Holy crap what a finale for Physical 100: season 2. A brutal game played by two super human individuals with astronomical levels of willpower.

Ripley:

More like "The Talented And Out of Shape Mr. Ripley." If he has to climb any more of those stairs, it'll be a short show.

Hot Priest is out of shape?

Piling on the love for 3 Body Problem the show. This is coming from someone who read 2 &1/2 of the books and absolutely hated them.

I finished 3 Body Problem series last night. I enjoyed it, but the last episode felt a bit overstuffed. I didn't remember much of the stuff from the books at all, and I had to read a plot summary of the book to be reminded. The changes worked great for me, and the author was an exec producer on the series, so I'm happy that he at least had some input.

I only ever read the first book in the series after reading that it went a bit off the rails in the later books. The thing I remember from it was the distinctively Chinese point of view. So much of the book was very culturally Chinese, and I enjoyed that about it. The series yoinked a lot of real world politics from the story. I suspect too much of that would have bored a lot of people.

Just finished Physical 100: season 1. That was a pretty wild ride! I enjoyed it a a lot.

Watched it only because of you Higgledy, so thanks for that!

Glad you enjoyed it. It’s the contestants that make it. Season 2 is just as good.

Late to the party but Blie Eyed Samurai really is excellent.

I enjoyed 3 Body Problem.

I tried to watch 3 Body Problem but only made it 10-15 minutes. The number of Absolute Genius Physicists [TM] and Mysterious Scrawled Messages [TM] made for a vibe I was way not expecting. I’ll probably go back—I mean I watched Geostorm twice—and I think I’ll enjoy it now that my expectations are reset.

I was hoping Parasyte: The Grey would be decent enough to be watchable but it’s actually shockingly good. Lots of smart plotting, tension and great characters.
