Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

My wife and I had been eagerly anticipating both Derry Girls and The Midnight Club, which arrived on the same day. We started with the latter, but can't wait to watch Derry Girls!

Anyone paying attention to Netflix's mobile-gaming service, which is available to anyone with a subscription? You can access the games through the Netflix app, and they have a few good ones on there - including Oxenfree, Moonlighter and Before Your Eyes. Recently added is Desta: The Memories Between by the Monument Valley and Alba developer, ustwo games.

EDIT: They have Into the Breach, too.

Spiritfarer is also available. I found it to be a fantastic game that'll definitely be in the top of my GOTY list.

3 hours into Spiritfarer, it is so good! Thanks for the heads up! Should we start another hidden gems thread?

Spiritfarer has a thread

Holy sh*t. Saw on NPR the real-life character behind the Netflix Inventing Anna show got out of jail, so I started watching that. Not what I thought it would be. So crazy!

Whoa! New season of Derry Girls!

That first episode of the new season was ASTOUNDING.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? Liam Neeson? So funny.

Hans.

That looks incredible. Please be good please be good please be good!

I don't know. There are things in there that looked good and things that kind of made me worry. Somehow the one-liners didn't feel all that clever to me.

Not really related to the contents of the series itself, but the music bugged me. I was certain it is a track from a company that makes music for trailers, and was likely chosen because of the snaps the track included, but parts of it sounded so familiar that it distracted me trying to figure out why. Turns out that it is an "epic version" of Non, je ne regrette rien.

Wasn't it Paint it Black by the Stones, or are we talking different parts?

Paint it Black makes everything good, but that does look fun. I have very fond memories of the Raul Julia / Anjelica Huston films.

Agreed on both points

Totally on board. Totally.

With zero marketing, it's unlikely to get a second season, but I like these characters.

I enjoyed the whole season. Entertaining characters and not too many bone headed moves. A solid B.

It is a mixture of the two, sorry, wasn't clear on that

A Paint it Black/No Regrets mashup you say? I'm not sure you could better epitomize Wednesday Addams. The only way I'd be disappointed in the music now is if the soundtrack doesn't include Halestorm's Freak Like Me with lyrics like "So write your name in gasoline and set that sh*t on fire"

We binged the entire third (and sadly final) season of Derry Girls yesterday and my god what a ride.

We have one episode left of The Midnight Club, and then it's Derry Girls all the way. I can't wait!

This actually looks good and not just for the irony.

Watched Mr. Harrigan's Phone, based on a Stephen King short story. It was... a movie. Some stuff happened. Not much, though.

I think the biggest issue here is that Netflix's trailer suggested that the film would be a heart-in-mouth suspenseful horror-thriller, whereas it was actually a glacially paced coming-of-age drama with a supernatural element. I was also put off by the movie's frequent segues into social commentary - beating the audience over the head with heavy-handed and obvious critiques of people's relationships with their phones. For example, a scene in which an entire roomful of students is absorbed in their phones while the protagonist muses in voiceover about lost connections. It's like... "Ok Boomer, thanks for your opinion, now can we get back to the movie?"

Donald Sutherland is in it, though. Always a plus.

Wachting The Playlist about the startup of Spotify. It is above average, but fun to see

Watched The Curse of Bridge Hollow and it was exactly the kind of stupid holiday movie I was hoping it would be.

Ha! Lord Varys showing up in Derry Girls was pretty awesome.

LTTP, but Arcane really is as good as everyone says it is, and I hate LoL.

I'm in the same boat. Dunno why League of Legends is so popular. But Arcane and the world/lore are pretty cool

FYI which is the basis for their upcoming MMO

Still trying to convince my nephew to see it.

Arcane episodes are just ~40 minutes and the first one is fantastic. Tell your nephew to just do it

I slept on it for a year or more. I don't 'regret' it, it doesnt matter, but its in the top 3 Netflix productions for me
