Random non sequitur posts catch-all thread

Chris Pratt voices the Monday-hating, self-centered hero and Samuel L. Jackson animates his long-lost father, who abandoned Garfield in an alley one rainy night, leading to lifelong trauma.

.........................................what.

Ghost of Tsushima is so pretty. It may not be able to be my game of the year, but it still might be my game of the year.

I hope they announce the second one soon. I adored the first game.

The pandemic really has changed all of the American public's entertainment habits.

Box Office Meltdown: ‘Furiosa’ or ‘Garfield Movie’ to Win Memorial Day With Worst No. 1 Opening in 31 Years

Based on Friday numbers, George Miller‘s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga or The Garfield Movie may only open to $31 million to $33 million from 4,035 theaters over the four-day holiday, the worst Memorial Day No. 1 opener since Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger debuted to $20.5 million 31 years ago in 1993 (and that’s not adjusted for inflation).

The two films are in a closer-than-expected race, but most rival studios expect Warner Bros. to take the top spot with Furiosa ahead of Sony and Alcon’s Garfield movie. Neither film aced it with audiences, with each receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Furiosa grossed $10.2 million on Friday, versus $8.4 million for Garfield. That’s a small gap considering the latter is a family film.

It could maybe also have something to do with an outing to a movie theater costing an insane amount of money.

The pandemic has absolutely killed going to theaters for my wife and I- the only movie we’ve seen in theaters for the last several years has been The People’s Joker, and that was only because we were afraid Warner Bros was going to cease & desist the filmmakers before it was available to stream.

EDIT: Man, does that ever have some Darmok and Jalad vibes…

The problem for theaters is that it's never been more accessible to watch movies at home. When I see an interesting movie releasing, my first thought is usually: "Cool - I'll catch that when it hits one of the streaming services in a couple of months." And when it does, I have a 4K TV with surround sound, which is... not as good as a theater experience, but it's immersive enough, usually.

Compare that to when most of us here were growing up. There was no guarantee that a movie would ever be screened on TV, so you'd need to schlep to the local video store, hope they had the film in stock, hope the copies hadn't already been rented by other people... Then you'd take it home and watch it on your 24-inch CRT TV with its tinny speakers...

Yeah, no sh*t more people prefer to stay home now.

I got curious to see what's playing at The Mall (as in one of the big malls in Athens, Greece is literally called "The Mall")...and all of the movie titles are in Greek, and then Google translates them back to English for me.

Best one right now:

Ryan Gosling in "The Stunker" (ΡΑΪΑΝ ΓΚΟΣΛΙΝΓΚ = Ryan Gosling)

You can see the Greek page here.

Since 2022 I think we've gone to the movies 4 times. Dune, D&D, Godzilla -1, and Dune 2. Pre-pandemic we weren't prolific movie goers but we'd still see 6-8 a year.

I think it boil down to time and cost. The pandemic really shortened release windows on to streaming and not being able to go to the theater demonstrated to me how much I was spending both in time and money on what was only a marginally better viewing experience.

I will say of the 4 movies above only Godzilla had a full(but smaller) theater. The other three probably had less than 30 people in them. I'm not really sure how movie theaters are surviving.

There were less than 10 people in the theater watching Furiosa with us, BUT that was a 10am showing on Memorial Day, so I get it.

But wow the adverts before the movie - the theater was trying to flog itself to any and all - want to rent our movie theater for birthdays? Bar mitzvahs? "Theater Church", whatever that is? Sure, you can do that here!

‘Mike Judge’s Beavis And Butt-Head’ Renewed For Season 3 At Comedy Central

There were Seasons 1 and 2? Like, I'm not super-duper plugged into entertainment TV stuff, but I pay some attention and I had NO idea this was even airing.

The first season was fine. Just like the original show the actual cartoon part can be pretty hit-or-miss. The problem is that all of the music video parts are pulled from stuff on Youtube or TikTok or whatnot. So, while there is a music video every once in a while it's often just some sh*tty vlog that they react to.

So, like @fter Midnight, but with Beavis and Butthead as the panelists. And the host. And the audience.

I had another vivid dream the other night, about a job from a long time ago. Mixed with coworkers from multiple jobs at one location. A few very recognizable faces I remembered when I woke up. One was one of my friends from almost 30 years ago. Today on Facebook that person was in the "people you may know" row so I clicked to see how she was doing, it's a really empty page. So I looked up on Bingoogle, and come to find out she died 14 years ago at age 39.

Weird and surprising.

Amazing to get this recommended to me after a night of a bit more Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

He mentions GR: Wildlands at the beginning of this, and I think it's accurate. They are absolutely 7/10 games. Atrocious writing and characterization, plots that fall apart if you spend more than 3 seconds thinking about it (an island in the South Pacific that appears to have been entirely bought by a company, and a Chinook full of SEALs trying to go there disappeared, and the U.S. did not immediately bomb it to smithereens? Also, everyone there has apparently been living there since WWII, but everyone is American? Just to name a few things!), but the gunplay is surprisingly fun, even if repetitive.

It's not bad, but it's not particularly good. It's "good enough" to entertain me for a couple of hours every week or two. 7/10.

(Although arguably, it should be 6/10 because even after they changed a lot of stuff, the game CLEARLY is trying to get you to spend money on microtransactions, like every Ubisoft game these days.)

I received a link from my local GP to sign up for a blood test that would check for prostate cancer. It took me to a website where I participated in a short survey. Turns out I’m in a higher risk group (i.e, old.) I was ready to sign up but it then went into a little chat like sequence where it went through all the problems with detecting prostate cancer, symptoms, etc. Finally it got to the part where I though I would put my name down but instead it simply said, contact your GP to arrange a blood sample.

Feels like it was a long winded way of doing that but perhaps it’s useful for more reluctant patients. I’m up for any test, scan or investigation that will check for cancer.

My wife's car was rear ended and it's been declared totalled. We live in Orange County NY, but the valuation if her vehicle was based on cars in NJ (they do a three cars in your area.) I know we're technically close to NJ by 30 miles or so, but they couldn't find a way to value it with 3 similar cars in NY? The valuation is significantly less in NJ, that's the only thing we can figure out, they want to pay out less.

Research additional comparable vehicles. USAA takes the average price of three similar vehicles in your area to help determine the actual cash value of your automobile.

Insurance is a scam bucket.

Hold up. Are they also charging you NJ premiums? Because that would be a total racket. IIRC, New Jersey has the highest premiums in the country.

Contest the evaluation? Sorry to hear about the accident, it is always such a hassle. I hope your wife is ok.

Don't tease.

My girls have been watching a LOT of Frozen 2, and every time Anna starts singing "Some Things Never Change" with "Yes, the wind blows a little bit colder" I always follow it with "And Leon's getting a bit larger!"

I love this little thing that's been added in the Windows toolbar next to the time & date where it shows you the temperature and if it's raining or sunny.

Even better is when you click on it it fills half the screen with clickbait-y headlines and one little window where you can click to bring up a full weather forecast.

EVEN Even better is how right as you click on that weather forecast, all the windows decide to reorganize themselves and you wind up clicking on one of the clickbait things instead of the weather which is the only thing I want to know right now.

Yikes. Glad I somehow never had that feature turned on.

Our current landscape of non-stop nostalgia baiting is starting to drive me insane:

Possible return of Limited Too sends internet into a frenzy: 'Please be for adults'

After weeks of teasing social media followers about a possible return, Limited Too appeared to confirm the brand's revival in a social media post Tuesday.

"Here to tell you this is for real. Launching in July," the brand said in an Instagram post.

The tease about coming back started on June 3, with the brand's Instagram account posting a photo with a cryptic "Share the Nostalgia" caption. A few days later, on June 7, the account posted another photo with the caption "We promise - we're not playing with your emotions."

............

Social media response to the brand's purported comeback has been largely positive, with fans of the brand clamoring for it to have adult sizes.

"I don't know if y'all understand how much millennials need this right now. Please be adult sizes," one Instagram user commented on the account's June 18 post.

"Please be adult sizes because we NEED THIS," another user wrote.

"I'm scared this isn't actually for us millennials who grew up with this store, just a rebranding for tweens," a third user wrote.

Oh my God, the store was for tweens and teens to begin with. You are 38 now. Are you scared that if Osh Kosh B'Gosh makes a comeback, that it won't be for people who need to schedule their first proctologist's exam soon?
