Random non sequitur posts catch-all thread

For the record, I hate reddit. I never checked to see that r/rule34 existed; it was simply the power of your belief in it that brought it into existence. So it's all on you guys.

I finally got the guts to check and there is in fact no r/Rule34. I would imagine it existed once but was probably banned a long time ago.

My feelings on Reddit have evolved over time. It takes some curation work (with the essential Apollo app), but can be incredibly useful (and entertaining). Just like the internet, there is a ton of garbage there too. It’s akin to saying “I hate GWJ” because you don’t like the D&D section of the forums (which, to be fair, some people have left the site over).

I’ve gotten in the habit of adding “ site:reddit.com” to my web searches and have often gotten better results than regular DuckDuckGo searches - especially for tech-related issues.

Lucky for me, I searched google for "what is rule 34" instead of going to Reddit to find out.

PaladinTom, yes, it exists. I just checked. The second post I saw was from six hours ago. But you have to login as age-verified, over 18.

Huh. Weird. I guess the Apollo app (which I only use) blocks it.

Yeah, I was about to say, I definitely Saw Some Stuff when I typed r/rule34/ into my browser.

Heh, I mean that's almost a subset of the the definition of rule 34.

it was all blurred out for me.

You might need glasses.

Or maybe not.

Today, I discovered what Portillo's is, and what the hell are you even doing, Chicago.

An entire slice of cake. Inside a milkshake.

Listen, I'm not arguing it's not good, I'm arguing that you all must ostensibly have the greatest cardiology hospitals in the world.

Also, congratulations to The National for embracing The Brand.

To quote the wonderful Jane Coaston, you simply will not out-foot the midwest.

I really want a series of videos of refugees seeing their first H-E-B or Publix or whatever. I can see how you'd assume Americans are all wiping their asses with golden toilet paper if you were from Yemen and saw a video of one of those places.

I feel 100% confident that literally no-one here, and no one any of you know will get this right.

Today I learned that Elmo and Teleporno are elven names from Tolkien's lore.

Been watching House of the Dragon? Wait until you meet the Lads. (:

I have not been, no. I have heard good things, but I don't have an HBO subscription at the moment.

I'm quite enjoying it. Reason I bring it up is that there are a group of characters in the book named

Spoiler:

Grover, Elmo, Oscar, and Kermit

. And one of them has been name-dropped in the show so it seems like they're sticking with that; the showrunners have made a point of sticking to book names even where that might cause confusion, unlike in GoT where similar or silly sounding book names sometimes got changed for the show.

I'm constantly surprised that my non-native speaking friends seem to do about as well at Wordle/Quordle as native speakers do.

Conversing with a friend from Europe this evening, and reminded how the American concept of "an old building" makes pretty much the rest of the world laugh.

"It's only 125 years old? Oh, that's adorable."

Yup. The high school i went to predates the United States by 180 years.

Not the buildings, to be fair.

Europe is scary because it’s old.
North America is scary because it’s big.

That is also my favorite part of talking to Europeans.

Paris to Prague is a 12-hour drive that could see you drive through four different countries.

NYC to Chicago is a longer drive, and you're not even to the Mississippi yet.

My best friend once went to visit Oxford and was blown away because they had an arch that was almost a millennia old. It led to a gift shop, but still.

I wish I could do a key word block on youtube so certain videos wouldn't pop up in my feed.

You can do that with a browser extension.

I would like to ban "reacts", please.

I spent some time blocking some of my frequent youtube annoyances, now I finally free to find a whole new set of annoying channels!

For text messages in movies I prefer they put the message on the side of the screen or speak the message. I don't like when they film the phone. Many times the phone is filmed in a way that makes it difficult to read.

Also be nice if they made sure subtitles are always readable. White texts against a white background is not readable. This really confuses me. Do they not watch the movie with subtitles to make sure everything looks okay. Is this not someone's job?

Recently, I somehow ended up with subtitles and English voice over on for a little while during a movie and the dialogue was different in each. Now, when I have subtitles on, even though I don’t know what was said, I understand enough to tell that the dialogue from the actors and the written subtitles aren’t the same. This unsettled me a little but I quickly accepted it. I know that in different languages you structure sentences in specific ways that would sound odd in another language.
