Random non sequitur posts catch-all thread

I was surprised you saw a billboard in a farmer's field that didn't feature a bible quote and/or a fetus. Then I remembered that you're in the UK.

Nothing beats this new bus in the UK though:

(If you're a bit confused as to what's so hilarious about this, please look up "Bussy" on Urban Dictionary.)

I used to work less than a mile from this place.

If someone randomly asked me where a company with that name might be, I probably would have guessed Newark, Delaware.

Spoiler:

That's where my wicked stepmother lives; I do not have fond memories of the place

As I got closer I realised it said, ‘Radiator outlet.’ My brain sometimes leaps to the least likely interpretation.

There's a company around these parts that does something in industrial construction. I see trucks with their name ASPLUNDH on, and every time I'm all "wait, ass-plunder?"

If it's the same Asplundh that I'm aware of, they're based in Pennsylvania and at least part of their business is tree cutting. My home town used to hire them to butcher trim the trees when they would grow into the utility lines.

Tobias Funke must run his practice nearby.

Found a Vaporwave mix I liked online (the romanticization of 80s/90s mall culture by Gen Z is still baffling) and after 30 minutes I was literally yelling "this is mostly just smooth jazz with the bass turned up!"

I want to start a YouTube channel.

I used to write for a games website back in the day and loved it. I felt like I was pretty good at it too. Got a few review codes and my writing was generally pretty well received. It seems like video content is a lot more popular these days, and I've got the gear from when I thought I wanted to stream on Twitch (which my generalized anxiety said NO to after a few weeks).

I think I want to do shorter videos with the theme of "you should play" or "give this a chance". Little snippets of cool things in games, maybe hidden gems, maybe just a series of cool good stuff. The less negativity the better. Eventually going into reviews.

It's just...So hard to start. How do I brand? How do I edit? WHERE DO I START?

Realistically, I know I'll have almost zero audience so I should just start throwing things out there to see what sticks, but I'm paralyzed by decisions and what ifs.

Posting here for accountability, I guess. Advice also welcome...

It's Wednesday evening. Put a video up by Friday night, August the 6th, at 5pm local time.

I have no idea what your schedule is like between now and then. Maybe you are slammed with work and literally the best you can do is a cell phone video with your phone propped up on your car's dashboard with you yakking unedited and unscripted into it for 10 minutes before going to work. If that's all you can do, do that. If you have the time, energy, equipment, and expertise to do more, do more.

Your next video is due Friday August 13th. Now you've got more time to dedicate to it. Take what you learned from doing that first video and improve upon it. Maybe this time you write a script first. Maybe you record it into something better than a cell phone. Maybe you cut out the mmms and aaahs and add some basic transitions in post. Pick one thing and improve on it.

Your third video is due Friday August 20th. Iterate some more.

Pick a schedule, stick to it, get some reps in. As many as you can as fast as you can.

That's the sh*t I need, challenge accepted!

With the caveat that it's already Thursday here, so Saturday will be my upload day.

If I don't see a video in this thread by Saturday, I will post in this thread for everyone to gather and make fun of you using very unflattering language.

I mean, nothing coarse or uncouth, this is a respectable gathering place. But very unflattering statements about your life choices.

Boom.

I think just diving in and not overthinking was the key here. hbi2k you champion, I seriously needed that kick to get started. Looking at it, I can definitely see some areas I want to improve, BUT I STARTED.

That’s dope! Good for you!

Agreed, that is solid work! Looking forward to more.

You, my friend, get a sub from me. You pick one of my all time favorite games to shine up.

I liked and subscribed and slammed that bell as well. Great first effort!

Conversations with clients:

Client: we are ditching what little we use of your services because we want to move everything to the cloud and be all cloud all the time.
Us: ok, well if you like, you know we do clouds too right?
Client: also we need a backup of our wifi configuration from your cloud controller so we can move it to this new on-premise wifi controller we are setting up
Us: ?

Thank you for all the lovely words, everyone!

Starting off with a Dragon's Dogma video means an instant subscribe from me. I'm sure any future videos will be masterworks all - you can't go wrong.

If anyone's thinking of playing a Metal Gear Solid game save yourself some time and play the "The Case of Mr. X" mission from Saints Row IV. It tells you everything you need to know.

Can confirm.

I live in eastern PA and have interacted with them before. A few years back we had a tee lean onto a power line and eventually cause it to overheat, burn through, and start several fires on our property one Saturday morning. It was a whole thing.

That all was brought under control, but we still had a tree leaving over the remaining wires on the line. The utility guys didn’t want to mess with the tree for fear of bringing down everything, so they waited all day for the tree experts to arrive. Enter Asplundh. They get up to the tree, assess it, make one singular cut, and promptly drop the whole tree down on the remaining wires, snapping them. They then packed up and left, leaving a whole bunch or apoplectic linemen who now had to work in the dark after waiting six hours so they wouldn’t have to redo the whole run. We still have the divots in the telephone line from where it was brought down to the ground.

Uh.... is there a thread anywhere where someone entering the world of... uh... "medicinal herb consumption" can get some advice?

I enjoy eating capers with a bit of pasta salad mixed in.

If there's a thread more specific than the Questions You Want Answered thread, I don't know about it.

If there's a thread more specific than the Questions You Want Answered thread, I don't know about it.

But also just Google. Though you will need to thoroughly vet those sources. Which will be much easier to do before you partake of the sacred flower.

I mean, do that too, but posting in the Questions thread might give you a head start doing your own research if someone can point you in the right direction. Depends what the question is, I suppose.

Fruity Cereal kitkat taste like trash. Coffee Moch a kitkat taste like heaven. The key lime were all gone so I couldn't try it.

I believe you but I still want to try one

The key lime Kit Kat taste like key lime. I need to try the coffee mocha.

I'm somewhat in limbo at the moment:

There are two contracts that I might get in the next week or two. One of them is 10 months, the other 2 months, but the answer for the 2-month contract will probably come earlier (most likely later today, with a start date of tomorrow or Wednesday, maybe next week if I'm lucky), and the interviewer for the 10-month contract was an arrogant prick I hope never to see in person.

I was planning on going back to my hometown to visit my parents this week. Not sure if I should just travel tomorrow, bring my work laptop in case I need to start on Wednesday, or just postpone to next week.

Other problem is: My brother has the key to my apartment, but has lost it, so I will need to stop by his place to give him mine so that he can come here and take care of my cats. Also I need to call the landlord to let them know and ask for a replacement. At least my brother offered to cover the costs of the replacement.
