Battlefield Heroes Catch-all

As far as I can tell, there isn't a BF:H catch-all yet, just some battlefield 3 posts that it has derailed and a Beta sign-up thread.

I'll start with the bad news.

We have also been working hard on the parts of the beta that aren't the game. Sound weird? Let me try and explain: You know the old saying about icebergs being 10% above water, and 90% below? Heroes is a little like that. There's the 10% game part you can see, and the hiding 90% is what we call the 'backend'. The backend does a lot of things. From running the website's features and looking after the items you have, to collecting the results from each Heroes game and matchmaking players into games.

We have received lots of great feedback from our beta testers. So much so that we are now ready to enter our next phase. On Friday evening (6pm CET) we will be closing down the current Closed Beta and moving our focus to polishing the backend. So for a while there will be no closed beta available to play. We expect to re-open the beta early next year.

Speculation says a summer '09 release.

Is the NDA over yet?

Huh. I played a bit of the beta and found it reasonably polished and enjoyable but not all that compelling compared to, say, TF2. I guess I'll look forward to seeing what the next phase is like.

Doesn't look like it is.

I found it very meh to be honest.

I'm a big BF fan, but after a few sessions with the beta it was meh for me too. I didn't like the mmo-like ability spamming. Your character moved so slow too.

I did like the smooth crisp graphics.

I'll give it another look next year.

It's sad they changed things up because I think they had the perfect formula for fun in BF42. That game combined with a few usability options from BF2/2142 would have been near perfect.

Yeah, I wonder what the next stage will be. For me it needs a full rebuild of the game mechanics to be a good game. I like the graphics, but the special power stuff is way above my head. Give me back my semi realistic 64 player shooter game!

Y! M! C! A!

Sorry. Those models look like the village people.

I thought the game already effectively out?

I don't much care for the game either. It's like Battlefield, but they removed all the complicated nuanced stuff that made me love Battlefield and replaced it with the fiddly, nonsensical stuff that makes me hate MMOs.

Open Beta just started today. Grab your player name now before they're all gone.

I have no desire to play this.

I'll give it a try. Its free- if anything it may just keep me from spending more money on Steam for a day or two.

I heard the combat was extremely slow and MMO-ish, which sounds absolutely awful. I hate standard MMO combat.

No, not at all, it's standard FPS combat. The MMO part is you get xp points and you get to play dress-up with your soldier.

I played the beta a few months back but honestly got bored after only about two hours. The game feels like some weird experiment that just doesn't work.

Yea this is definitely a FPS. The limited maps (even though they just added a new one) does make it get a bit boring after awhile.

Played the beta months ago for one evening and the slow pace and streamlined classes and weapons just make it very dull if you have have any FPS experience. The game is aimed at casual gamers. My money is on BF1943.

No, not at all, it's standard FPS combat (though it is third person). The MMO part is you get xp points and you get to play dress-up with your soldier.
