Hey I'm white, and yesterday I was always labeled a racist cause you know the man is white, now that a black guy is in the white house does this make me not a racist? Or am I a minority? (being white male I consider myself the only minority left. Because no one gives any special treatment to white guys )
So will Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton no longer be allowed to play the race card? What do you guys think?
PS: I know there has been something of a thread about this but this is a post Obama victory thread.

Gosh I hope so. I have no idea why the media keeps pandering to those old useless airbags.
[EDIT] I make absolutely no comment on the parts of the post not directly quoted. =)
I've got an idea... Why don't we transmute hundreds of years of systemic social oppression into a single person, and use that to tweak our political opponents? Just a thought.
(As a white person, I've gotten special treatment all my life. Maybe you're living in the wrong area or something, Phara.)
Another fired poster posting? They just don't stay fired like they used to.

This statement is exactly what I miss about P&C when I am not posting. Nicely done Robear.
Tasteless...and not the least bit clever imho. Something about Obama girl doing a striptease on girls gone wild would have been much more interesting.
I'm white..I dont feel like I require any special treatment. I believe all peoples should be treated equally. I also beleive that just because Obama is president now, the jokes and craziness dont need to stop. I mean..who stopped hating on bush when he was in office? Oh well, this society of political correctness kinda makes me sad. There is still Freedom Of Speech is there not?

Maybe they say fired, but they really mean paid leave.

are you joking or honestly trying to be serious here? Either way it's not funny.
Regrettably, this will actually be a theme in the media in the coming years. Pundits and talking heads who wish to ignore real inequalities facing black people will now just point at the president and go 'eh? eh? see!'. You will see many priviledge white people, tired of going through the harrowing task of hearing but ignoring inequalities, basically say 'what more do you want?!? the president is black!'.
The ultimate tragedy is of course those black people who now cry 'free at last, free at last, thank god almighty, free at last' as they are thrown in jail for 20 years shortly after taking up a crack habit because their home was forclosed on. As the black majority in South Africa has so cruelly discovered, just because whitey ain't in power does not mean you will be getting your share of the pie. Today whitey don't run things, richy does. It just so happens that 200 years ago richy WAS whitey and, barring idiocy, social position tends to persist.
I am very happy that the hurdle of a black president has been jumped, it is an important landmark, however the idea that larger social attitudes, let alone the vast inertia of vested interests, just flipped is naturally silly.
Actually, it is kind of funny. Low brow perhaps. But funny. Robear's high-brow riposte was funnier though.

Just because you have the Freedom to say what you want does not mean others do not have the Freedom to disagree with you.
Steering things in a different direction, one strange thing for me about the Obama victory is that the imagery of jubilant black crowds brought the OJ Simpson verdict to my mind. And it bothered me that that's what came to mind when I saw that. But, being born at the start of the Reagan era, the civil rights movement was well before my time, while OJ occured as I entered adolescence and was more aware of things happening "out in the world", so to speak.
Of course, in reality, far more than just black crowds were cheering Obama's win, but understandably, that's the imagery a number of press organizations have run with.
I hope this is a big, permanent step away from the sort of widespread racial tension that would result in one side* cheering a murderer.
* (not just the "black side" - given a different climate, roles could very easily be reversed)

up to the point i quoted... sure.

What White America failed and still fails to understand about the OJ "victory" was it was far less about OJ and more about Rodney King.. it was in essence "pay back"
Doesn't make it right or logical.. I'm just pointing that out.

It's hurdle # 27 in a race consisting of approximately 13,878 hurdles.
Everything you said (I just quoted part of it) is very true, and listening to NPR all day and hearing version after version of "god almighty, free at last," I too am very, very nervous that this will be a subtle step back for civil rights.

I never thought I'd type this but Michael Irvin actually offers and explanation of sorts:
"What a historical moment that was last night. ... From an African-American standpoint, I watched my people -- watched my people -- celebrate the not guilty verdict of O.J. Simpson. They were so hungry for a victory of some kind that they celebrated -- we celebrated -- the verdict of O.J. And I was thinking to myself, 'Two people are dead. Two people are dead' Now, I'm not talking about my people, I'm explaining them here. They were just so hungry to say 'We have a victory.' And I cringe when I even think about that."But last night I watched a celebration. A real celebration. A real celebration, and it was a celebration for everybody, and everybody celebrated, and they kept showing this shot, and I was watching, of this little black girl and this little white girl, just sitting there crying together, and I thought, wow. I thought about Martin Luther King and his 'I Have a Dream' speech, and I thought about him saying, black kids and white kids playing together. ...
"Last night we removed all differences and became just one, and I thought that was a beautiful thing. It was just a beautiful thing. I stood here with my kids, we watched it and we cried and we prayed."

Consider that many Christians consider themselves a persecuted minority. David Limbaugh, Rush's brother, wrote a book called 'Persecution' all about this. The idea is, in essence, that unless the country is living by Leviticus then Christians are being totally screwed. Its the same kind of absolutist mentality that says that when you destroy most of a country, kill 4 million people losing only 58,000 and complete the declared goal then somehow you lost. That was Vietnam, by the way.
You will see something similar in the media - black president = african-americans win. Therefore any further comment about any greviences disproportianately effecting the black population is just ludicrous whinging about some social abberations that the system, who brought you a black president remember, will surely address in time.

I'm white and I've never been called a racist. I'm not sure what your doing to get labeled as such so often.
Or am I a minority?
Last I looked, there were still a helluva lot more whites than anything else in this country. You are safely in the majority.
So will Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton no longer be allowed to play the race card? What do you guys think?
Unless and until President Obama and the democratic congress enacts legislation forbidding the race card from being played, I would suggest that they are perfectly within their rights to do so, both early and often. After all, it is a free country.
In last night's Grant Sq footage there appeared two men -- a black and a white male. The black one evidently had two kids with him -- one, a little girl, sat on his shoulders. The white guy took his other one, a little boy, onto his shoulders, and they stood next to each other.
It's nothing extraordinary by NYC's standards, which is probably not to be extrapolated to the coast-to-coast sense of the country's standars. But the image that little scene created was so befitting the moment and very powerful nevertheless.
Also: everything what Conglacio says.

BOB PORTER
I looked into it more deeply and I found what happened was he got layed off about five years ago and no one ever told him about it. But through a glitch in Payroll, he still gets a paycheck. I went ahead and fixed the glitch.
BILL
Great. So, um, Milton has been let go?
BOB SLYDELL
We, uh, we fixed the glitch. So he won't be receiving a paycheck anymore. So it'll just work itself out naturally.

We always like to avoid confrontation whenever possible.

It wasn't just Rodney King either, King was a microcosm of what was perceived to be a much larger pattern of police brutality.
But regardless of the impetus, the imagery remains. (And as bad as King's beating was, that dude is still alive - but we're not going down that road)
Bear's Michael Irvin quote really puts it well.
Re: The Man keeping you down:
I would really like to believe that the Republicans will abandon this digusting Nixonian reliance on resentment to mobilize their base. We're supposed to resent the lazy brown-skinned people who are soaking up our tax dollars, filling up our prisons and sneaking into our country. We're supposed to resent the liberals, who have somehow been keeping us down over the past 8 years in spite of the Republicans' best efforts. We're supposed to resent the gay people for wanting to take away marriage. We're supposed to resent the educated people who think we're stupid and want to take our guns and religion away. The "party of responsibility" has spent decades looking for places to point the finger and lay blame for all of society's ills.
As a disillusioned conservative, I sincerely hope that the GOP uses this opportunity to point that finger up their collective ass. Identity politics got them into this mess and it won't get them out again.

Yeah, whoops. I always forget the new site requires two steps to ban instead of one.

I think I have a pretty good idea of the remarks that will follow.

QFT.
If this is all they can come up with to define their identity, maybe it is best for them to remain anonymous.
Are you really Michael Irvin?
I'm not sure. Induct me to the Hall of Fame and see if I cry.
A related question - will Obama's race help him avoid some of the press roasting Bill Clinton received? Will some of the normal bile spewers bite their tongue a little for fear of being labelled a rascist?

Not sure about the rest of the press, but you know that the Daily Show & Colbert won't pull punches just due to race. If he earns a ribbing, he'll get one.

They don't have much choice. They won the white vote handily. It was losing the minority vote 60-40 or so that killed them this time. And it will kill them again in 2012 if they decide to cater to the base. I remember earlier in the cycle supporters of Hillary Clinton were saying that Obama couldn't win based on a coalition of minorities, leet starbucks drinkin' white people, and the young. Well, he did. So much for that theory.
Granted, the pubs still got 46% of the popular vote. And it took a major financial crisis to swing votes Obama's way. And a recession. And two endless wars. So . . . . maybe it was a fluke.
