There is only so much a fighter can do when the other fighter doesn't want to put themself in danger. Case in Point the Nate Quarry vs Kalib Starnes fight

That wasn't a title shot though. I've always been of the opinion that the challenger has to take the title from the champion.

To bad it isn't pride rules cause Anderson could've pulled a Sakuraba (1:16 for Saku ground kicking, 1:45 for a flying Saku stomp, 2:13 for the Saku drag)

Amen to that. You get a lot more spectacular knockouts in Pride precisely because of the elimination of gamey grappler protection rules.

Damn, that's a badass submission. Any idea what the "official" name is for this? Rear Naked Triangle?

Reverse triangle

CRACK!

I see stuff like that all the time and it makes me wonder if any of these fighters ever had any training regarding protecting their chins. Jeez. What possible advantage are they gaining by sticking them out there?

Is anyone else planning on going to UFC 101?

I've been thinking about it since I'm 'round the corner in NJ. Any word on tickets prices and a sale date?

By the way, I'm not sure if any of you follow non-UFC organizations or wrestlers-turning-MMA but Bobby Lashley (3-0 after tonights submission win)from the WWE is looking pretty solid. Next month he's fighting the always controversial and extremely large - Bob Sapp. Over 600lbs. of solid muscle between the two of them so it should be a helluva battle. I'd like to see Lashley get a shot at Brock one day.

Here's Bob Sapp against Cro Cop - check out the size differential!

Bob Sapp is a circus act, he can't actually fight for shit. I guess that makes him a decent opponent to a newcomer like Lashley.

Yes ticket prices have been announced. They will go on sale to the general public on 5/23. $600 to $50.

I agree with Sinatar Bob Sapp is a side show freak.

Yeah, he is a freak and I can't take him too seriously as a MMA fighter. Still though, it' hard to argue with the brute strength and punching power.

two words: Kimbo Slice.

Lots of brute strength and punching power, but zero technique will get your ass handed to you every single time by a skilled fighter.

Now watching Kimbo vs. Sap would be interesting. Provided that your definition of "interesting" includes what would look like the MMA special olympics.

I watched Kimbo fight Sapp on a Comcast HD channel. I was very pleased I did not have to pay for the fight.

Weird fight with Bobby Lashley vs Mike Cook. Looks like Cook is out around 1:59-2:00. Check out the weird spasms afterwards.

Almost looks like something right out of WWE with the weird shaking bit.

Is Mike Cook wearing make up?

Nice to see Big John in the ring. I never heard what was the dispute between Big John and the UFC.

Yeah I'm not completely sure either. Here around 14:30 he says he left on good terms. Here he praises Affliction. This one which is more recent, he is asked about the grudge Dana has. He just laughs and says he doesn't know. So no idea. To bad though cause I really liked Big John in the UFC.

Here is a link to the Bobby Lashley vs Jason Guida fight. Gotto say it looked like Bobby had a hard time with Jason Guida. He doesn't have the best mma record with 17 wins and 20 losses. If Bob Sapp is at least as good a fighter as Jason, the extra size might be a real factor for Lashley. Cause he seemed to really struggle with Jason. Anyway here it is.

*edit* Maybe this is the cause of the rift between the UFC and Big John?

With these new changes, including a ban on putting hands over the mouth or nose, but legalizing the straight up-and-down elbow strikes that had been banned, White believes he’s got a new enemy. And it’s a referee who at one time was the longest-lasting fixture in the company.

“It’s John McCarthy,” White said. “He doesn’t want to be a referee anymore, now he wants to change the rules. And he’s announcing for Affliction.”

It's a shame that non-fighters like Jose Canseco are being allowed to fight (and get destroyed) in MMA fights. He's going against 7'2 Hong Man Choi on the DREAM 9 card next Tuesday. Bob Sapp is also on there adding to freakshow-ness of the card.

On a side note here are some old, but funny animated MMA fights.

Loved the Fedor vs Tim Sylvia and the Anderson Spider one!

Japan has a weird fetish for freak fights like that, thankfully you don't see nonsense like that over that often.

Jose Canseco is a trainwreck. I mean what the hell is he thinking getting in the ring with Choi. Choi may not be a real MMA fighter, but he's had enough ring time to know how to toss around. Jose got his ass handed to him by a retired punt returner in 45 seconds.

Choi isn't a real MMA fighter, he is however a real K-1 kickboxer. Canseco is going to get KTFO.

Somebody better start teaching Canseco takedowns and submissions.

Canseco is going to get hurt.

Canseco hasn't been right since getting dumped by his super hot ex wife.

While we're on the topic of celebrity/freakshow athletes, anyone think we'll ever see this NBA star actually fight MMA?.

Hmm. I am not going to be as easy to discount Shaq as I am Canseco. At 7'2", he's a very big guy. The fact that he can actually move around at that size makes him a very different kind of freak than Choi Hong Man (who can't seem to make it up a set of stairs without getting exhausted). He may not be an MMA fighter, but his conditioning alone may make him a credible threat to another freakshow like Choi.

Two unrelated updates:

Undefeated Brett Rogers (9-0) will meet former UFC champion and recent Affliction fighter Andrei Arlovski (15-6) on the June 6th Strikeforce card.

I'm not sure what to think about Rogers. He's a pretty sloppy fighter and I don't think he's fought anyone noteworthy. I only know him because he was on deck to take Kimbo after the schedule Shamrock fight. Rogers probably would have KO'd him.

Veteran heavyweight and once again rising contender Cheick Kongo (14-4-1 MMA, 7-2 UFC) will replace Heath Herring (28-14 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and fight Cain Velasquez (5-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at next month's UFC 99 event.

A lot of people seem to think Velasquez is the upcoming elite heavyweight that will ultimately take the title from Lesnar. I have seen him fight but definitely look forward to seeing Kongo in there since he's one of my favorite fighters.

I think Kongo has really improved - probably started with his win over Cro Cop. If he can figgure out the ground game, he'll be hard to beat.

Strikeforce has been able to put together some pretty good cards lately - the last one with Scott Smith/Radich wasn't too bad with that fight being great. It is strange seeing Arlovski floating around Affliction and Strikeforce, guess he's a true free agent. It is strange seeing him and Silvia in the UFC game along with Tito.
