Megaman 9

Anyone get this 8-bit goodness? Impressions? (Available as of yesterday in WiiWare and I believe xbox360+ps3 shop place)

I got it last night but haven't had much time to play it yet. Seems like it's everything that someone would want if you grew up playing the NES Mega Man's. Hard levels. Hard bosses. Sprite glitches. Plus the achievements and the speedrun aspects of this make me a happy camper. Probably going to pass on the DLC though.

Man, I was meaning to start this thread, but I was too busy playing Mega Man 9 over and over again. I agree with Jeremy Parish that this is the best Mega Man game ever made. I'll definitely be getting the extra level and Protoman DLC, but the rest I'm not sure about yet. Eventually I'll get it, because I'm a consumer whore, but for now I may pass on more difficulty settings.

It's out on WiiWare as of yesterday, out on PS3 this Thursday, and out on 360 next week on Wednesday. All three versions have Achievements, so there's no reason to wait for the 360 version. Plus, playing it on the Wii with the sideways-turned remote probably feels the most natural and NES-like. No reason not to go with the WiiWare version.

Just put the throw down on Galaxy Man and Concrete Man. Reminds me how soft modern games have made me. Concrete Man's state took 8 lives on its own ( Stupid third robot in the sequence with your tricky maneuvers! *trying to avoid spoilers ). It will be interesting to see how bad I botch up my initial run order after it's all done and done.

Within the last couple of months we've had this, Braid, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Castle Crashers and Wario Land: Shake It! It's great to see the rush to "next-gen" hasn't made much of an impact on the production of good ol' side scrollers.

There have been an incredible number of great games in all genres the last few years. This is really the golden age of gaming.

This cracks me up. I used to wish Capcom would just go ahead and make an "I'm finally out of ideas-Man."

Megaman 1 had Guts-man. His power was to make big blocks of . . . guts.

I knew they were creatively bankrupt when they made a Pharoh Man in Mega Man 4. Pharoh, guys? I mean, really?

Note: Mega Man 4 is still awesome, haters be damned.

I'm excited about Mega Man 9, but also have some trepidations about it. This probably stems from the fact that in recent years, I've become a wuss about hard games, and from what I hear, this is the king of hard games. It's like, on one hand, I love Mega Man, but on the other hand, do I really want to have a gaming session filled with fitful sobs?

Yeah, I'm okay with crying. I'll get it on the PS3 next week. Impression filled sobs to come!

My only problem with Megaman level design is the need for memorization in order to pass certain areas. A surprise enemy that gives you no time to react and leads to an instant death extremely frustrates me. MM9 certainly is no Kaizo Mario, but I do get to points where I just turn my Wii off in a rage.

Random question: is it possible to play this on Wii with a GameCube controller?

(I ask because I managed to snag one of those Hori digital controllers for GameCube. I used it with the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and it seems like the most authentic way to play...)

I think that just due to controls, I'll wind up picking this up on the Wii rather than the 360.

I don't think so... I seem to remember, during the purchase screen, seeing it say Classic Controller and Wiimote only... I haven't tried the Gamecube controller though, so I guess it could work!

So far as the game itself goes, I'm enjoying it so far, but am generally terrible at it... I had never really played the classic Mega Man games, so I'm mostly through Mega Man 1 (as in, not through Dr. Wiley yet...and will likely never make it through...) and halfway through Mega Man 2, so I'm trying to finish that one up before I hit up 9 hard core.

I've tried a few of the MM9 levels, however, and they seem pretty awesome to me! I unlocked my first achievement last night, so that was kinda gratifying, too...

Sorry, beeporama...it apparently doesn't support GC controllers...

"The Mega Man 9 Effect"

I died like 3 times in the first 25 seconds of play and gave up

I'm just not cut out for that kinda stuff anymore

Start with Galaxy Man or Splash Woman. Far easier stages than all the rest, with manageable bosses to boot. Jewel Man's stage is pretty doable as well, but I couldn't handle Jewel Man himself without having his anti-power.

I really suck at Mega Man games and have beaten Galaxy Man, Splash Woman and Concrete Man. That damn dragon in Magma Man's level is giving me more problems than any of those three bosses.

This game freaking rocks. Beat Galaxy Man last night (first boss I was able to reach in the various stages I tried) and then Jewel Man. Not sure who I want to tackle next, I've died a lot on all the stages. Might give Wasp Man a shot next.

Splash woman has been the easiest boss so far. She only has two attacks and they are easy to dodge.

I'd recommend Splash Woman or Plug Man next.

*shudder*

I just want to say this for all those people that want to try this game but fear the difficulty. It is over-hyped. Yeah, it's tough, but it's not going to bust your [insert genitalia here] with unfair and insane difficulty. You can easily stock up on lives/e-tanks/m-tanks with the bolts that you collect to power through the boss battles, and the levels themselves you can think of as puzzles. If you get stuck on a level, go to another one. Perhaps a Rush upgrade will help you pass a tough part. It's just really urking me how people talk about the difficulty of this game. Sure, it's tough, but it's not going to break you.

Another go or two and I think I'll be able to get past Jewel Man. Managed to get up to him last night and I think I've got the boss pattern down.

"The Mega Man 9 Effect"

Oh so true =D

To reference the post below, that's definitely spot on. The game can be finished relatively easily by just powering your way through; enough dead enemies and you have plenty of bolts to buy all the E-tanks and other items that you need. Granted, this may not be the "ideal" way through the game, but it's fun either way.

It's tough if you don't overlevel your character and are rusty at your MM skills.

It's tough at first, but everything has a pattern. My first time through, I died constantly. Got Game Over on almost every level. Without even trying, I eventually learned all of the patterns so well that I can now get through the game without dying. Pretty soon, I may even get through the game without getting hit.

I will deffinetly have to pick this up. Been a long time since I got to play a game where I died over and over, kinda miss the old school feel.

Argh, the final bosses of these games always seem to get the best of me ( I'm looking at you MM 1 & 2! ). After two hours of plugging away at Dr. Wily's castle, had to call it quits. Got to the final form and everything. Ah well, bought a M tank and an E tank for the next run sometime tomorrow. Too bad I have to clear the whole castle again. How are you guys doin on this gem?

You bastard, you just spoiled the story for me!

I'd never played a Mega Man game before this one, but I'm really enjoying it so far -- even if it can't remind me of days playing earlier Mega Man games, it still reminds me of the kinds of games I was playing back in those days. I kinda hope this retro thing doesn't become a fad though. With so much cheap death potential, it walks a very fine line between nostalgia and broken design, and I'm sure if more of these kinds of games appear they probably won't tread that line as delicately.

Man, I've never played a MegaMan game before, and after playing the demo, I see that it's a wise choice. Contra is like breathing compared to that game!

Was never really a mega man fan but after playing mega man 9 I am now obsessed. I've beaten all the bosses just on the Dr. Wily stages now. If you guys think the regular stages are hard just you wait. I also just picked up Mega Man powered up and Hunter X for the PSP. Great game I highly recommend it. Also if you are having problems 1up has a great superguide for the game.

Universe Man?
