GWJ Chess Club/Tourno?

Also, I completely missed a mate of Don's in a winning position I had. God, I'm so stupid. Good game, Don.

I had that happen with FogRob the other day. I thought I had him against the ropes and tunnelvisioned. Missed a blimey queen/pawn checkmate.

It happens to everyone. It is a rather auspicious start to a tournament, though.

I'm slowing down. I walked into a trap and missed a easy win I think. Got to put more thought into my moves. Got take things more serious. Got to go all super saiyan on you guys.

I try sitting on my hands as much as possible before even thinking about touching the mouse. The minute I get all clicky, bad things start to happen.

Who broke the site?

Yeah site is down. I blame the Crab people from planet 9.

Aw, right before I checkmated fogrob, too...

I'll do anything to stay alive a little longer!

I can't help feeling like I've met my match with this group. My first win was a pretty lucky opportunity when I was struggling to stay alive.

One of my other matches has me gasping for life support as well.

Site appears to be back up now.

So, where's the button to throw the board in the air in disgust? I'm sure I'll need that later.

Laptops aren't that heavy, really. I'm sure you'll be able to throw them just as easily!

Don't worry Elysium, I'll be gentle. I'm not sure if being in the small group is a good thing or a bad thing, I haven't got as many games to click through and overanalyse.

I played a couple games against the computer at lunch today... wow, am I ever rusty!

My first loss (of many I'm sure) goes to Minarchist. Good game, sir. Congratulations on your win. And now for my REVENGE!!!

I get all OCD when I have too few games to play. I sit and think about every move for 30 min, and in the end I miss the most basic crap... a real fool.
Take this piece of humble advice from me: avoid the analysis board at all cost! It's the gateway to a world of indecision and pain. I hate you, analysis board!!!

Yay!! I have lasted 17 moves in my rematch versus LiquidMantis, regardless of whether he checkmates me in the next move or two, I am considering it a moral victory since that is more than twice as long as I lasted in the first game.

Darn one move short of lasting almost four times longer than my first game versus LiquidMantis.

Odd openings probably aren't a good idea in internet chess. A lot more time to see the holes in them. On the other hand maybe they are so odd the other person is at a complete lost.

That's funny, I was just thinking the opposite, how everyone opens the exact same way. I have yet to see anyone play something other than 1. e4 to open against me, and I have yet to have anyone decline my Queen's Gambit when I'm white (although DonDGT held out the longest in our most recent game; it may have ceased to become QGA by the time he took that pawn).

The thing about odd openings is you have to know what to do with them. In other words, you have to be studied enough to remember the sequence of moves, the variations, and the pitfalls if you stray.

Defending against one brings up the same issues, so while you can decline the gambit and look for your own opportunity to switch momentum, often the easiest and most comfortable thing to do is to get the board back to some semblance of what you'd see if you opened with e4 and played from there. Take the pawn, move out bishops and knights, and move forward.

I've been watching other people's games while I sit here at work, that's about how exciting it is here

I've noticed DonD is quite an agressive player more than happy to exchange material to exploit position.

A great use of forking can be seen in Baron of Hell's game against fogrob, which is something I know I'll have to watch out for since I usually undervalue my knights and sacrifice them too cheaply.

As per usual, my chess play is a perfect example of what not to do.

Ohhh so now you tell me, that I shouldn't be following your every move. That is just great, I was wondering how I was down two games already.

Ohh so now you tell me that I shouldn't be copying your every move. I was wondering how it was that I found myself down two games already.

So there are eight games completed in the tournament and five of them are mine. I'm not sure what to make of that.

First blood in my group as the mighty Elysium falls to the impertinent Aussie! I hadn't even seen that possibility of mate.

I hadn't even seen that possibility of mate.

Funny you should say that. Clearly, neither had I.

Since I joined up after the cut, if anyone wants some casual or rated games, hit me up! I haven't played in a while, and the computer is really frustrating me.
