GWJ Chess Club/Tourno?

Pages

Hi fellow gamers!
I've recently been picking up chess again after 15 years of abstinence. I'm now going to the Josh Waitzkin school (AKA Chessmaster) to study the basics that I never really learned in the first place when I was a kid.
Of course playing against the PC is fine and serves the purpose of improving my game, but I was thinking it would be great to get my ass kicked by some real people instead. Problem is, I hardly know any real people who play chess, so I was thinking I'd turn to my imaginary friends at GWJ
I get the feeling that a lot of people around here play chess online, so wouldn't it be nice to get together in an organized manner at one specific site, and if it works out get some real competition going?
Now, I've no idea what site we could choose, since there seem to be a million and I haven't tried any. What's a good place, with free subs, good interface and other-good-features-that-might-be-good-to-have-though-I-can't-think-of-any?
Anyone interested, by the way?

There are a couple of online chess threads here (that I'm too lazy to search up right now). We had some activity on redhotpawn.com but I think it may have fizzled out. There's also a very recent thread about using chess.com. The two games I got challenged to on there timed out for some reason though.

What exactly were you doing with those pawns before you quit?

Horrible, horrible things that left them emotionally stunted and incapable of capturing other pieces.
Aaaah, now you made me remember!!!

I, too, would like to know about any good online chess sites where I can challenge my friends.

Did the Goodjer activity fizzle out, or the site itself? And was it any good to begin with?

Don't know about the redhotpawn stuff, but we're a tiny group now at chess.com (well, I haven't been accepted yet... hello? jakeleg? mr group master? please take me!), so you might check us out there. Quick easy and free to make an account. Have no experience of other sites, but this one's good enough for me! My username is albertoluigi if you want to challenge (and subsequently crush) me.

Bump! il dottore has been resurrecting the chess.com group and I finally got a game in over there. I'm sure the time out errors before were some user error on my part. I was hoping to stir up some GWJ interest again. We have the chess.com group and I don't know if people are still using redhotpawn.com or not.

If you want a mediocre game feel free to send me a game challenge. I'm Liquidmantis on both sites.

Chess is more than a game. Chess is war. Two forces of equal power clash in a test of skill. Some are driven mad. Some come back only to find they have nothing left. But the chosen few, the ones that live for this contest of the gods, come back changed men, better men. For this few nothing is beyond their reach. God help you if you face one of them.

Another bump and stir to try and get this thing going. There's 8 people on the chess.com group, maybe we could do a little tournament action?

1. What is the Chess.com group? Did a search for GWJ and didn't see it.

2. How do we join the group? Is there a special person we need to ask or some other hoop to jump through.

3. I only had two questions so why did I feel the need to number them?

To answer my own questions after playing around on the site

1. The name is Gamers with Jobs

2. Once you have the group up on the site you will notice a Join button on the right hand side.

3. If Sesame Street has taught of anything it is that numbers are good.

I somehow got admin rights, so Old_Man_Pi and BaronOfHell are both in the group. I guess it's time to get those challenges out!

I have been playing at red hot pawn for well over a year. Very nice site there, but apparently I am not very good, since I just play against one friend of mine primarily. I invited another friend to play a game and he soundly stomped me and wasn't interested in playing another game.

I just submitted a request. I really enjoy playing, but I am very unskilled.

Well, come on over to chess.com and get in with the GWJ group. I'm pretty terrible, so at the very least you'll have me to smack around! I've already approved 3 more members just tonight, so it looks like we might have something going.

Just joined chess.com and sent a request to join the group... lets start some challenges... I am a real lousy player that has not touched a chess board in maybe 8-10 years...

Hey I am sawu on Chess.com (I am super-admin of the GWJ group.) I believe I made everybody who was in the group last year admins. I approved your request Sonrics. I haven't played much in the past year, but I'd be up for a game if someone wants one.

I signed up, but had to lengthen my username, so I'm in as DonDGT.

When I played on Chess with Friends (iPhone), I won more than I lost, so I suppose I'm a better than average player. It may be selection bias though.

I used to play a fair bit on http://gameknot.com

I could be interested in some long turn time limit games given the timezone differences.

EDIT: Just signed up and requests a join to the group over at Chess.com

Wow! This thing is growing fast! Woke up this morning and found two more applications waiting. I went ahead and sent friend requests to everyone in the group. Not sure if this is necessary or not, but I"m sure it couldn't hurt.
Has anyone spent the money for the premium membership? I was curious if it might be worth it, even if it's just to kill the horrible ads on the site. I may also need it in order to have a private tournament for us.
Speaking of a tournament...What is everyone thinking for time controls? One move per week? One move every three days? Would you want more than one game going at a time? I figure we'll be pretty solid as far as membership in the next few days, so maybe we'd start the tourney Friday or Saturday?
Let me know what you guys think. (and how many are interested)

One note, chess.com seems to be really unreliable with email notification. Just because you haven't gotten an email alert doesn't mean an opponent hasn't moved. I think what happens is if you've been on the site that day you won't get email for anything that happens that day. So, should you check in and then some one moves shortly after you won't ever get a notice. I know I've had games sit on hold for a while because I just forgot to check.

Jeez fogrob, you got the magic touch! Me and Liquidmantis tried a few times to get get this going and nobody gave a damn! Well done, well done.
It would be great to get a tournament going soon, but maybe we can wait a few days and see how many more will join the group. Maybe start next Monday? I'd say 3 days per move, otherwise we'll never finish. As far as simultaneous games, I'm fine with however many, guess it depends on how we set it up.
In think everyone can start a tourney if they have a timeout ratio lower than 5% (which I don't ). Are you willing to be the MC?
BTW, I'm albertoluigi over there.

Is this primarily played slower, like be emial, or do you guys match up and play head-to-head? If we play live, do you use headsets, or do we just text during matches?

I'm in for a tournament, 1-3 moves a day.

I'm in, 1 move every 3 days gets my vote, but I can play as many simultaneously as you want.

It seems the favorite so far is the one move every three days with multiple games going at once. I'll try to set one up where everybody plays everybody. Although, should you find someone who's willing to play faster, I see no problem with getting some games done a little quicker. I know I usually have far more time when the girlfriend is away at work for the day!

Jayhawker: We'll be playing a web-based version of correspondence chess. In the one-off games, there's a little chat window off to the side. I assume it will be the same for the tourney games as well.

I could probably get a couple of games in while I'm healing in Left 4 Dead 2. Don't tell anyone I play with though.

Same.

I have sent in my application. I hope I meet the criteria.

I played a bit of chess in high school (Chess team, but really bad). I seem to be good enough to consistently beat really casual players, but not good enough to be even respectable against people who know openings and things.

Then I'll probably drop like Frazier to your Ali. I'm just now working through the "mate in one" problems in my newest book. Welcome to the club!

Just sent a request, looking forward to trying to get back into the game. I'm not too bad at tactics, but pretty terrible at strategy, and I have no openings memorized because I flatly refuse to do such a thing; I think it's against the spirit of the game. Does anyone know if chess.com allows for "Fischer Chess" setups?
