Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Yeasayer - Rome

album: Odd Blood

Oingo Boingo reincarnated in 2010.

(no members of Boingo included, just talking inspiration.)

Has anyone said Fela Kuti yet? Because they should've.

His son, Femi Kuti isn't half bad either.

Awesome stuff, Pred. I've been hearing a lot about Femi Kuti on KCRW recently, I'm surprised I haven't heard them mention his father, given most of their DJs' affinity for breaking off into "Six Degrees" tangents. Or perhaps I just missed it.

Good call either way.

So I totally skimmed the last 8 pages...

Back in my college indie-rock days (early/mid-90s) I was knee-deep in the Chapel Hill/Merge/Matador scene with bands like Guided by Voices, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, y'know, cool stuff like that. But now 15 yrs later, other than some Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion that keeps me sort of cool, I listen to a lot of Nancy Sinatra.

So I solicited some new music from some trusted friends. Here are some of the suggestions (and I've never heard of any of them): Surfer Blood, Japandroids, Hot Chip Any of them any good? Should I even bother checking them out?

Hot Chip is feuding with I Come To Shanghai, so you need to pick their stuff up so that you can pick a side and know your enemy. Also Japandroids are f*cking cool.

And Yo La Tengo is still around, their new album is neat. Especially the first song:

OMG, just heard some Hot Chip, it sounds like the soundtrack to The Neverending Story. *Not pleased*
This I Come to Shanghai band, despite their dumbass name can't possibly be worse.

I did pick up the newest Yo La Tengo. It wasn't bad, but it's no 'I Can Still Hear the Heart Beating as One.' *sad*

I ask for GbV and Superchunk, and this is the best I can get?!

A couple indie tunes for your sampling:

Artist: Elliott Brood
Song: Without Again
Genre: Banjo Rock / Death Country

Give it a minute, it'll grow on you.

If that's not your cup of tea, try:

Artist: Holy f*ck
Song: Lovely Allen
Genre: Dance Punk (whatever that means - I just call it pure awesome)

If you like either artist, the links I provided allow you to listen to a pile of songs from each.

If I'm not mistaken, I Come to Shanghai is Robert Ashley's band, which means something to some people. Not so much me. I've listened to A Life Well Wasted and it passes time, but doesn't really do it for me.

Japandroids is what you're looking for.

Some hip hop picks as I catch up on everything from last year:

Possibly the best-named rap group around, Cunninlynguists had a good year in '09 with two full-length releases (Strange Journey volumes 1 & 2), although the second was definitely weaker. They bring a great energy to their old-school low-fi beats, best heard in the live version of Lynguistics. The album is among my favourites from last year if not the most accomplished.

There were a few good collab projects last year, Sum & Belief a.k.a. The Lone Wolf were probably my favourite, just for doing something a bit different. This is the opening track from the album, best described as a hip hop western, http://open.spotify.com/track/5SkUnXu5tIR4gr7td7bNPa. Sorry, I couldn't find a link on YouTube.

Speaking of collabs, Felt (Slug & Murs) released their third album last year, produced by Aesop Rock, which was a real disappointment. A few good tracks did make it through though: Permanent Standby is probably the best but tracks 1 and 4 are also worth a listen.

Lovage: a Dan the Automator supergroup, including Jennifer Charles, Mike Patton, Kid Koala.

The album is Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By - the cover art is worth the price of admission alone:

Here's one of the songs. NSFW-ish lyrics:

That Lovage disc is awesome. I wish they'd do another one.

I'd be happy to forgo that, if it meant that Faith no More would be doing any East coast touring..

Band: The Bambi Molesters
Song: As the Dark Wave Swells

I've not been a fan of Joanna Newsom's previous efforts, but this song has me floored:

Swinger of birches?

You could do worse than to be a swinger of birches, but no, I don't think there's a connection there.

Indeed, sir.

I'm not the only one who thought that poem was intensely sexual. Frost loved messing with people like that.

I'll start it off with these guys... found them last year and since I have a soft spot for anything that involves lyrics having to do with epic battles, ancient myths and the old gods influence, I got a few of their songs and have enjoyed them immensely.

Band: The Sword
Song: the Maiden, the Mother & Crone
Genre: Heavy Metal (but not scream-o)

Band: Efterklang
Song: Raincoats

Artist: Brad Sucks
Song: Making Me Nervous

A one man band with no fans, his albums are pay what you want on his site.

Thrice - "In Exile"

Not their best song ever, imho, but it's a new video and I rather like the song.

I know this post is old, but this is one of my favorite Thrice songs, so I'm giving it the repost it deserves.

That said, I really enjoy this purely piano song by Mae. It's called Seasons.

And a considerable step to the more dramatic side of music, the video for Green Screens by Sleeping At Last is fantastic:

This is one of the coolest videos I've ever seen...plus the song is good too.. (video was a contest entry that I believe won)
Band Dashboard Confessional
Song: Thick as Thieves

Los Campesinos - Romance is Boring

Saw them in Reading a week ago; great live, very nice people.

I'm liking the Surfer Blood stuff, but i'm of your ilk, so i may be biased to that sound. Check out the new Spoon record too.

Don't much care for Japandroids, sounds like rehash to me.

Check out Amazon's Daily Deal: Curse Your Branches by David Bazan. $2.99 today.

That album is really good. A bit overly didactic about the singer's atheism/agnosticism at times, but it's still great - especially if that subject matter speaks to you personally.

I got this cd after listening to it at the record store

band: Mumford & Sons
song: White Blank Page

Youtube

My favorite Yeasayer song, Tightrope, doesn't appear on any of their own albums (only appearing on a Red Hot compilation), but here's a great studio video of it.

Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me: Her new album is an epic 3 disk album. I preordered that awhile back on vinyl and have been enjoying it immensely the last month. I see someone mentioned Baby Birch earlier which is a great song from the album (although it isn't nearly my favorite). Most people don't like the harp combined with the childish voice, but I love it.

Olafur Arnalds - I guess he opened for sigur ros sometimes. He composed 1 piece a day for seven days and released the songs for free mid-quality-mp3 download at http://foundsongs.erasedtapes.com/
I ended up buying the 10" vinyl version which was definitely worth it. My favorite is the piece from day 2.

Tomas Dvorak - Just got the limited edition Machinarium soundtrack on yellow vinyl today. The music is fantastic and listening to it ended up bringing me to this thread!

I've also been thinking about the recent suicide of Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse which has me kind of bummed. Everybody should check out his stuff. The Dark Night of the Soul project was the last thing he worked on I believe. I imagine that album was probably mentioned earlier in this thread.

Also, can't wait for my Broken Bells (DJ Dangermouse and James Mercer) album to arrive this week!

Devo - Fresh

New single for the upcoming album due out soon (first one in 20 years for those keeping score at home).

Me likey.
