Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Anything by Mike Patton. (Faith no More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Peeping Tom) I'm a giant fanboy.

Here he is doing some Italian Opera.

Fun Fact: He did the zombie noises in Left 4 Dead and I Am Legend.

And the anger orb in Portal! And The Darkness in The Darkness! And the Bionic Commando in the Bionic Commando remake!

I'm a Patton fanboy too. Have you checked out his soundtrack to Crank 2? It's pretty badass.

I heard he was doing it, but I have not had a chance to listen to it yet. I'll check around for it this weekend. I have no doubt that its bad ass!

About Joe Pug again:

After all that time wondering about the free EP offer (by mail, if you asked him for a copy or more for friends, he would mail them to you). I just got a package in the mail today, containing 5 copies of the Nation of Heat EP! Yay! Joe Pug heard my cries! Now to find people to give them to, as I already own both of his EPs

Band: The Decemberists
Song: Leslie Anne Levine

The whole band is awesome but this is one of my favorite songs by them.

Some great suggestions in this thread! I've got one of my own:

Band: Do Make Say Think
song: Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
genre: instrumental post-rock(?)

Linkydink: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aywQd... (beware, poor recording equipment)
(but you really need the whole album)
http://www.amazon.com/Winter-Hymn-Co...

why: Fall is coming, and this is an album I listen to loudly to welcome the cool weather. DMST is made of many members, many of whom also play in the slightly more known Broken Social Scene. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! is one of those songs that always gives me chills at about the halfway point, but you have to see for yourself. If you are a fan of Explosions in the Sky (which played most of the soundtrack to the movie Friday Night Lights) you may like DMST.

This must be listened to in stereo, and preferably when you don't need to concentrate on something and can just get lost in the music.

That other thread about late night panic attacks made me think of this song, since it's so damn accurate to my own experiences of them.

Anxiety Attack by Jeffrey & Jack Lewis

(I think this video is not official or anything, just the first hit on Youtube)

Band: The Black Seeds
Songs: Slingshot, Take Your Chances

I saw these guys open for John Brown's Body Friday night and was extremely impressed. I was a good time all around and if you have the opportunity to go, you won't be disappointed.

Yay! New album out by Emilie Simon. Boo, not available in the US. Fortunately, I have a friend in Europe who was able to smuggle me a copy. (How long before the RIAA decides that going after music pirates is no longer enough, and music smugglers get on their radar? Alternatively, how long before these stupid regional restrictions go away?)

Ooh, I had no idea that she had another album on the way. I must hunt down a copy!

I don't think it's an issue of regional restriction so much as a lack of a publisher in the country in question. Shipping overseas probably costs more than simply teaming up with an overseas publisher and having them take the brunt of distribution.

This band looks like they're a lot of fun live:

I recently purchased the album Dark Was the Night from itunes. It is a diverse collection of 32 or so songs from many independent artists that produce a very enjoyable experience as a whole.

I was glad to find this after may years.

'keep playing till I shoot through'

Tie me Kangaroo Down, Sport

The annoyance of shipping overseas doesn't really explain why I was unable to buy a digital copy from any source whatsoever, but my friend in Switzerland was able to buy it for me just fine and put it somewhere for me to download.

Had to dig to find this thread again.

Thrice - "In Exile"

Not their best song ever, imho, but it's a new video and I rather like the song.

Band: Super Furry Animals
Song: It's Not the End of the World

I'm not sure that this is their best introductory song either, but the video was amazing. Super Furry Animals are a Welsh Pop/Techno band that have been active since the early 90's.

Metallica. Seriously, you should know this band. They're everywhere.

Artist: Rev Theory
Song: Far From Over
Genre: Rock

Thanks, I almost forgot what I should avoid

With all the talk in the 2009 Nominations thread, I looked up the Canucks called Metric and realized I've heard them before and liked them without ever really knowing who the band was at the time. I even have podcasts featuring live (and acoustic) versions of their tracks from Fantasies, their latest album. Here's a link to KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, on which Metric performed in early June.

Artist: Aesop Rock
Songs: None Shall Pass | Daylight
Genre: Hip Hop
Not his best tracks, but the most approachable.

Artist: Brother Ali
Song: Truth Is
Genre: Hip Hop

Artist: Kasabian
Song: Club Foot
Genre: Electronic / Indie
I get the feeling that these guys aren't very big outside the UK.

Gogol Bordello - Underground

Anytime these guys are playing in my headphones at work I can't help but dance in my chair. It makes typing harder but it's worth it!

EDIT:

Also, Movits! - Fel Del Av Garden

No idea what they're saying but I love it.

King Crimson meets NIN, featuring Eddie Jobson (UK), Trey Gun (King Crimson) and assorted other badasses. I know there are some dudes here that will dig this.

Artist: Matt Alber
Album: Hide Nothing
Song: End of the World

Matt used to be one of the counter-tenors in the classical group Chanticleer, then moved on to try his hand at country music, then moved into a sort of adult pop style of music.

I know he's not going to be the cup of tea for a lot of folks on here (he ain't heavy by any stretch), but I love his music and he deserves a bit of a wider audience.

That's some good stuff. The first thing it reminded me of was "Futile" by Porcupine Tree.

Double thumbs up for the Chapman stick.

Band: The Temper Trap
song: Fader

I liked it. Sounds very heavily Rufus Wainwright-inspired.

It really does, but Alber's voice is about 100x less annoying than Rufus Wainwright's. I like it too.

You mean he took some of the cotton balls out of his mouth?
