Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

The Horrors have a new album out- Primary Colours.
Sea Within A Sea
I Can't Control Myself

Ahh. I am very sad. Émilie Simon is apparently playing a few places around the U.S., and I'm not going to be anywhere useful to see any of them. Ahh, well. Figured I'd post something here in case people had never heard of her or would care where she's playing. Also because I'm a rabid fanboy.

And I changed my avatar.

I'm... uh... not stalking her or anything though.

(If I was, it would be easier to see her in a live performance.)

Evans Blue
My favorite band next to
Down and Above a local band here in MN

Friend's band did the music for this trippy video.

The Wheat and the Tares by L.C. Crowley, starring Lonnie Holley with music by The White Oaks. Their music starts at about 1:12.

Zee Avi: Bitter Heart

-This girl was discovered on Youtube by Jack Johnson's label. A surefire sign of the changing music industry!

Seńor Coconut: Around The World and Sweet Dreams

-Great covers, off of the album Around the World

Let me add to this impressive thread.

Brainiac - Vincent Come On Down
Nevermind the awful 1990's Mtv video, just listen to a great band cut short by a weird death.

We Are Scientists - After Hours

The Wrens - I've Made Enough Friends
The very best song about a new intimate encounter. Ever.

Josh Ritter - To The Dogs Or Whoever
An upbeat indie/folk song with more words crammed in than "Greetings From Asbury Park-era Springsteen".

Shout Out Louds - Time Left For Love

Possum Dixon - Crashing Your Planet
A great band that never quite made it. Forgotten in the wave of '90's grunge was this surf/rock band from LA. True Story: the singer gave my friend, James, a haircut before a concert in Grand Rapids, MI.

Wild Light - California On My Mind
words = NSFW

Little Man Tate - House Party At Boothey's
Libidinous Brits who don't skimp on the catchy tunes or sexual references.

Band Of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You

The Saps - Coup De Grace

I think that's enough from me. Let's hear more from you guys. Need. More. Music. YumYum.

Dubsteppin' it out with whats hot... I would give a list but seeing as I doubt anyone here fancies this stuff.

Artist: Joker
Song: Do It

Aww, that's a shame... she's even more adorably super-cute in person! I never thought she'd tour Australia, but she did about 18 months ago I think, and we snapped up tickets to see her. She played at the Melbourne Arts Centre, which is usually reserved for orchestras, so the whole thing was a little surreal, but her and her team put on a great show, complete with fishbowl and prepared piano.

I Fight Dragons

Local Chicago pop rock band (or NES rock, as they call themselves) that supplements their music with chiptune. For live performances they add the chiptune via NES controllers, SNES controllers, a power pad, and a guitar hero controller. Probably some other stuff, too. They wear t-shirts of members of the Justice League and sometimes play the Zelda them a capella. They're shows are a blast and I've listened to their EP over and over again for the last few months.

Band:The Cat Empire

Song: Hello

Genre: Uh.. Australian jazz ska?

Amanda Palmer.

Also, as prompted by her blog, Quartet For The End of Time by Olivier Messiaen.

One of the most profound musical compositions of all time is the Quartet for the End of Time written by French composer Olivier Messiaen in 1940. Messiaen was 31 years old when France entered the war against Nazi Germany. He was captured by the Germans in June of 1940 and imprisoned in a prisoner-of-war camp.

He was fortunate to find a sympathetic prison guard who gave him paper and a place to compose, and fortunate to have musician colleagues in the camp, a cellist, a violinist, and a clarinetist. Messiaen wrote his quartet with these specific players in mind. It was performed in January 1941 for four thousand prisoners and guards in the prison camp. Today it is one of the most famous masterworks in the repertoire.

Here's a couple songs from my new favorite band (always lasts a couple weeks). I rarely indulge in techno/pop/dance music anymore but when it has flair, I like it very much.

Royksopp - Poor Leno

this is an electronica track that's extremely soothing for some reason. Can't really explain my liking it.

Royksopp - What else is there?

The very distinct voice of Finnish/Swedish/Icelandic divas seduces me, badly. If you ever found yourself liking Bjork (not Finnish, I know) but especially The Knife, since Karin Dreijer (of The Knife) sings it, you may want to give this a try.

*special treat: Trentemoller's Mix of What else is there?*

The Cult - Love

Do you miss late 70s rock?

I may not have been born, but I know the good stuff when I hear it.
The Holy Angel Fire delivers, and it's kinda hard to stick them in one genre. I prefer their first album, which is under-represented on their myspace page, but hey, the new one is good too. "Your Blood Matches My Dress" and "Revenger" are both off Make it Electric, the album I like more, but they're oddball tracks. I wish they had some other ones posted.

Matt Mays and El Torpedo - Terminal Romance

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. And this song is the greatest form of Springsteen flattery.

Joe Pug - Hymn 101

Ok, this guy is amazing.

And I'll also recommend Glasvegas, to go along with the recommendations on page four.

Cheers to that.
Its My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry kicks off my Summer '09 Mix. It fades in after a sound sample of Natalie Portman from the movie Closer. Good stuff.

Update:
Just listened to that Joe Pug song, along with a couple more, on Youtube. I am now a fan. He's like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan's lovechild. I like it alot.

The Coven has a ridiculously funny song called Boneless Christian. Of course, this could be highly offensive to an awful lot of people, but it makes me laugh. The rest of the album of same name has to be a joke, it would be sick if it wasn't. The lyrics are absurdly funny, not as funny as Cannibal Corpse, but funny nonetheless.

Thanks for the Joe Pug recommendation. He's fantastic.

If you like him, I'd recommend some Tim Easton as well — 1 & 2.

This one just got stuck in my head as soon as I heard it.

Her album is called Youth Novels and it's pretty good. It's kinda like chill dance music.

She's great live. I caught her completely by chance when I was in Toronto playing with Anna Ternheim (who I'd really gone to see) and El Perro Del Mar.

Sticking with Anna Ternheim I'd recommend:
Anna Ternheim - What Have I Done

Really great acoustic performance from another female Swedish artist.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive - Slapped Actress

Man, if you ever get a chance, see The Hold Steady live. Order a bourbon and a beer, sit back and enjoy high-quality bar room rock.

Wheras the Hold Steady I just didn't get. I saw them live earlier this year supporting someone else and although the music was really good I hated the vocals and they completely ruined it for me. I looked on message boards afterwards and comments seemed to be split between those who loved the band and those who hated them, the samed seemed to be true with most of the audience from what I could see.

Anamanaguchi - Blackout City. They're a chiptune band. Just hit up their web site and hit the flash playback at the top to hear it. It'll put a smile on your face.

Ha! When I tell people about him, I describe him as bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen's lovechild Glad you all like it, the whole EP is great, I got it on iTunes (first iTunes purchase ever! I feel like my granddad when he first got internet access!)

Speaking of, you can find a podcast from KCRW in which Blitzen Trapper performed live, including Black River Killer. Good stuff!

If you sign up for his email newsletter at joepugmusic.com, you'll get a download for another five songs (the "In The Meantime EP"). It's good as well.

Picked them both up last night and have been listening to them all morning. I'm already looking forward to when he stops in Ann Arbor in November. Add my thanks to the pile.

If you're talking about Ann Arbor
Michigan, then I might just have to attend that show.

November 6 (Friday), Ann Arbor, MI, The Ark. His last American show before taking off for Europe.

EDIT: Show starts at 8. $15.

A while back he offered to mail CD copies of the Nation of Heat EP to who ever asked for one. He said, if I recall (and will double check the blog in a moment for that other EP D/L), that fans could ask for as many copies as they want, to spread his music to friends. I e-mailed him, but he never responded. I imagine he was probably overwhelmed with requests and couldn't get through the whole list. Oh well, I bought the EP as I wanted to support him.

EDIT: The offer is still up, but my request must have been lost in the ether. Oh well!

I thought about emailing him:

"With shipping and production costs what they are, and my friends being more of the 'digital music' types anyway, any objections if I give them a copy of the .mp3s?"

I'm carrying them on my USB key, my iPod, and my BlackBerry. Let me spread the love Joe!
