Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Liars, "It Fit When I Was a Kid (Crystal Castles Remix)"

Genre: Dance? Industrial? Somewhere in there.

The Fratellis as in the same Fratellis from The Goonies? That's an awesome band name.

^^ I really like that.

I mentioned this one in my Golden Asterisks thread, but here we go again anyway:

Band: Katzenjammer
Song: A Bar in Amsterdam
Genre: Indie Pop / Avant-Folk-Pop / Cabaret / Sea Shanties / Girl Group

Four female multi-instrumentalists, making the first interesting pop-ish album I've heard in quite some time. My wife can't make up her mind whether she calls them the "circus girls" or the "pirate girls". They're all over the map, but they're always incessantly charming.

Another great cut from the Katzenjammer album: Hey, Ho, On the Devil's Back

Katzenjammer makes me wish I could strut across stage in a dress, bouncing between 5 different instruments alongside three other whimsical chicks too.

Here's an oldie I'd heard in a movie and loved

I needed to share

It's an interpretation of Somewhere over the Rainbow

Very smooth. I guess most people ~should~ like it

Here's one you have to listen to the lyrics and laugh with the song.

Theory of a Dead man - I Hate My Life

Animal Collective - My Girls

Joe Pug - Hymn 101

Band: Islands
song: Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby
genre: Folk-pop

I have just learned about the existence of The Smiths.

I think a lot of people know this band by name but here's a song

The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out

I recommend two listens. The first time I paid attention to the lyrics, the second I paid attention to all the small details in the music. Now I absolutely love it

I love that song since forever. Give The Smiths and Morrissey good listens, they are worth it. A haunting song in a similar vein is Morrissey's Seasick Yet Still Docked, gives me shivers every time, and I know it for 15 years now.

Band: The Whip
Song : Blackout
Genre: Rock / Electro

From my favorite album last year 'X Marks Destination'. Not a single filler song on the album, it's absolutely fantastic.

The Airborne Toxic Event's Does This Mean You're Moving On? and Sometime Around Midnight

You're Wondering Now (I'm not going to list the artist because most people won't click the link if they knew. But damn, it is surprisingly good music...)

You have made me a huge fan of that last artist! I think I'm going to need to buy that.

VNV Nation has too many songs that mean something to me for me to choose just one. One of their newer ones I like, that I almost can't listen to without crying, is Illusion. Further is an older song that was actually the first song of theirs I ever heard.

Feel free to drop by IRC if you wanna talk to me about them.

EDIT: OP, I am totally digging Autechre.

The Deadwing album by Porcupine Tree.

Elbow - Grounds for Divorce. I can't throw enough superlatives on these guys.

The Guillemots - Get Over It [edit: Wow. I'd never seen the video. It sucks. Listen to the song, ignore the video.]

Glad to see another Fratellis fan! Both their albums are fantastic.

"Nothing to Worry About" - Peter Bjorn and John : Go buy it now and you will not be disappointed, Uncle Jimmdogg would not disappoint.

"Zero" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

"Dirt Room" - Blue October

"Sex on Fire" - Kings of Leon

"Float" "Lightning Storm" - Flogging Molly

"Ghost Town" - Shiny Toy Guns

"Ghetto Love" - Spinerette

Get to downloadin'.

Also! Some comedy!

"Lollipop" (Lil' Wayne cover) - Framing Hanley
"Don't Trust Me" - 3OH3
"Careless Whisper" (Wham cover) - Seether

Band: Autechre
song: Clipper
genre: Electronica

YES!! Autechre are simply amazing. There's nothing else that comes close to touching them. I've been a fan for a long time, and they're still putting out good stuff. I'm still hearing new things in some of their records I've had for over a decade.

Here's my recommendation for something folk should try:

Artist: Venetian Snares
Album: Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett
Genre: Crazy-ass drill'n'bass mixed with East European poetry

A bonkers Canadian who makes shockingly intense drill'n'bass. Truly music for the ADHD generation. The album I've linked above it is a highpoint in his output, and is far more musical and less ear-punishing that some of his other output.

The following three are favorites of mine:

Artist: Elysian Fields
Song: Bend Your Mind
Genre: Alternative

Artist: The Knife
Song: We Share Our Mother's Health
Genre: Electronic

Artist: Pailhead
Song: I Will Refuse
Genre: indutrial/Punk

I'd say Amon Tobin and Richard James gives 'em a run for their money, at least.

I'd say you're outta your mind fella. Or that you've not listened to much Autechre. Or that you've not listened to it enough.

I jest. I love me some Aphex and Amon - seen all 3 of 'em live over the years. But at the risk of sounding like a numpty, neither of them has the same intricacy and complexity as the mighty Autechre.

Funny story about my love affair with Autechre. First album I bought was LP5 (the untitled one). Listened to it, thought "what a bloody racket", and put it back on the shelf. Fast forward about 2 years. I put it back on out of curiousity, and am completely and utterly blown away by it. I have no idea what changed in those two years, but I'm thankful it did.

I love pulling up at a traffic light or gas station, blasting out some Autechre and have people look at my car to see what's wrong with it that it would be making that many pops and clicks.

You're right. I haven't listened to it enough. Only what random tracks I can scrape up from last.fm since I don't have the money for buying cd's (and if my experience with last.fm has taught me anything, it's that the tracks it does feature are sometimes adequate). I'd say that tobin and aphex twin are more of a breadcrumb trail to a world of sound I haven't the practice to really hear, yet. Experimental electronic music is still sort of a new experience for me, so I think much of the intricacy is lost. I'm still a sucker for deep, swelling, melodic drones. I figure it's another phase in the process of discovery.

Hmm, GB Leighton is a huge deal here in the Minneapolis Area

Artist: The Mountain Goats
Song: The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton
Album: All Hail West Texas
Genre: Low-Fi, Folk

Those lyrics (especially in the context of Dollface) make a nice counterpoint to escape-themed games like Portal. I guess that means they might fit Braid?

Who doesn't like drummer chicks?

Band: Echobelly

Album: On

Genre: Indie

Can't pick just 1 song off this album, I love them all

Band: Darker My Love

Song: Two Ways Out

Album: 2

Genre: Psychedelic/Indie Rock

My friend is the drummer. I wasn't into psych rock but this album is a good listen any time of the day.

Band: Aberdeen City
Song: Pretty Pets (made famous by this Crysis Engine video)
Album: The Freezing Atlantic

This is really good. Picked the album up off emusic. They are like a less punk more pop all-girl Gogol Bordello.

I loved these two.

Some of my personal favorites:
+Raconteurs (Jack White of the White Stripes side project) - Salute Your Solution
It's rock and I really enjoyed the entire CD (Consolers of the Lonely)

+Noah and the Whale - 2 atoms in a molecule, 5 years time, and pretty much the rest of there stuff is really good

+The Editors - An End Has a Start and Smokers outside the hospital doors

+Vampire Weekend - they have some really good songs and I highly recommend their album

Also, on a less 'serious' note: Flight of the Conchords - If that's what you're into and Business time
