Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

I’d never heard of Chappell Roan before. Enjoying some of her songs.

She's f*cking spectacular, right?

Funny enough though, I only just got around to doing the deep dive this week. She's been pretty ubiquitous in the queer-kink-performing arts communities we frequent -- like seriously, I don't think we've been to a drag, burlesque, or kinky circus arts show in the year or so since Midwest Princess was released where there wasn't at least one act using one of her songs or being otherwise inspired by her, and every time it's great and the music is undeniable -- but I've just never been in a mood to dig in to a new artist afterwards.

But last Saturday night we went out to see Paul F. Tompkin's Varietopia show on their tour stop in San Francisco where Nicole Parker was the musical guest, and she and the Varietopia band performed performed the most mind-blowing cover of "Good Luck Babe" -- like seriously, if you've ever either heard her sing or been to a Varietopia show you probably can imagine how good it might be, but I assure you it was better than that. Then on Sunday we were watching the new Riki Lindhome song and the YouTube algorithm suggested Chappell Roan's Tiny Desk performance, and I was like, "well, guess now is the time."

Look, most of the time I'm pretty uninterested in (and unimpressed by) algorithmic content suggestions, but a broken clock is right twice a day, right? And since to my great lament it's impossible for me to provide a link to the amazing Varietopia cover, I'll instead provide another solid hit from the algorithm as I've been diving into things:

And, why not the Tiny Desk concert while we're at it:

And the banger ass video original video for Pink Pony Club:

And, the best music video from Freddie Mercury's solo career, for definitely completely unrelated reasons.

And I'll just leave it to you to get spun off down a Kate Bush rabbit hole on your own after wondering about Chappell Roan's other influences.

Today I learned of the existence of this:

Glorious.

Classic

Oh wow. Looks like over 30 Weird Al video were recently re-uploaded in HD. Time to dare to be stupid and re-watch them all.

That man is a national treasure.

Unfortunately they were upsampled with A.I. stuff and a lot of them are... kinda funky looking. That one is less egregious, but the more active they are the more little details are super weird and offputting.

There was enough of a backlash when they went up they re-uploaded the old ones too. (Al had nothing to do with it, the label apparently did the "HD" stuff.)

From Wikipedia:

Dubioza kolektiv (also known simply as Dubioza) is a Bosnian avant-garde dub rock group known for their crossover style that incorporates elements of hip hop, dub, ska, reggae, rock, punk, electronic music, and Balkan music, and for their socially and politically conscious songwriting with lyrics in multiple languages. In 2015, Dubioza kolektiv was referred to as the most popular Bosnian musical act.

Imagine something like Rancid singing RATM kind of lyrics over ska/reggae/dub, but really infectious and upbeat? It's great.

dang that's catchy af

New Bon Iver, and I REALLY dig this simple, stripped back direction.

Another one of Ice-T's bands? I'm there for it!

And always Bon Iver.

My son found this one

Cooool

That would fit right in on Disintegration.

This is just about a perfect pop song:

I can't get it out of my head. Simple but beautiful. Eilish is always annoyingly talented.

The song is cool (go Kalandra!), but I love this video.

Reasonably sure I'm way late to the HARDY party, but just in case. Catchy tunes and sharp lyrics.

And a bonus: Jax feat. HARDY:

Caroline Polachek - True Love Waits [Radiohead Cover]

Rosé & Bruno Mars - APT.

Fun song based on a Korean drinking game. The song is catchy as hell and they both look like they're having a ton of fun here.

Never heard of RAYE before I heard this

APT. makes a ton of visual, lyrical and musical references to 80's songs. I'm sure I did not catch all of them but there are plenty. Madonna, Human League, Blondie, etc. How many can you find?

The people who wrote Toni Basil's "Hey Mickey" are actually credited on APT because they use their drumbeat.

I thought that sounded familiar! Thanks for placing it for me.

Recently discovered Bear Hands but I guess they’ve been around for a decade or more. Stripped down electro/post-punk/lo-fi pop. Perfect rainy season music.

Intrusive Thoughts

Wow, that is amazing!

This just went free on YT
