Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY

Artist: Marina
Song: Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land

Massive pop sound. Great production. Great voice. Interesting lyrics.

Edit
The whole album is great. Really good lyrics!

I'm loving that new St. Vincent album. Especially this song:

Played it on repeat for days now I'm re-enjoying all the older stuff.

40 years ago today Siouxsie and the Banshees released their album Juju. I wouldn't discover them until a decade later, but diving into their vast and impressive discography I've always found the album Juju to be one of their darkest and most powerful works.

Opening with Spellbound- about something beautiful yet sinister that calls to you and you have no choice but to listen. It also features the horror of Big Brother in "Monitor", a dark look into a killer's mind in "Night Shift", and closing with 7 minutes of slowly losing control with VooDoo Dolly

2 singles out so far...

Ok. So I’m just now understanding that y’all are posting songs from a Metallica covers album. Which sadly is much more intriguing than a new Metallica album.

I'm really excited for these girls and this comeback. This is their first song with all 12 members since 2019, since one of the members, HaSeul, wasn't participating for personal reasons. The song is Bollywood inspired with some of the strongest choreography you'll see in K-pop today.

Loona - Paint The Town

Third single from the Blacklist. Isbell with a western/blues take on Sad But True.

Have you heard of Pool Kids? You should listen to Pool Kids. They're so good! Also they have the best hair in the math rock game by FAR.

They have a new record out. It’s absolutely delightful!

I don't know how I feel about this cover. I mean, yeah it's good and provides an interesting take on the original, but it just makes me wish Isbell would go all out on some southern rock, slide guitar shred-fest all of his own.

Honestly. It sounds like a huge bite off of Sturgill Simpsons style on his album SOUND & FURY. On one hand, if you’re going to copy someone you might as well copy the best. On the other hand, be true to yourself, and don’t try to copy a genius from your own particular genre of music.

That said, I feel Isbell’s version of this song is missing something. He should have been just a bit more true to the source material. It seems like a huge pose; like he doesn’t believe his own bullsh*t. I’m not convinced.

Couple other versions...

I actually agree with all of the above, and it's not like he doesn't have the chops to lean into a Southern Rock cover:

I was at this show and when he did one final encore with Whipping Post it was a full on assault on the senses in the best of ways.

Here's a fun thing to try that isn't "new music" exactly but is a way to find out about new stuff. A game called Music League.

You create rounds with themes, and then everyone picks 2 songs that match the theme. When the time is up, it generates a Spotify playlist from it and you vote on your favorites.

I've started one up, with a song submission deadline of next Thursday, and a voting deadline of next Friday:

I hate Spotify but I want to play along.

Here’s one more reason to love OFF!.

I like both The Knocks and Studio Killers so this is win

Also Nathan Barnatt cameo

I'm very happy for you, but not gonna lie, a tinge of jealousy too. The first and only time Isbell came to Western Australia was in 2012. He was supporting Ryan Adams. I had no idea who Isbell was and wouldn't for another year or so, but I had just discovered Adams and was especially in love with his Ashes & Fire album. And to top it all off, the gig was on my birthday. And I've since learned that it was almost definitely the very first post-sobriety Isbell gig. For anyone that knows his history, that is a huge deal.

Instead, I chose to spend my birthday kind of with a girl who, as it turned out, was seeing was seeing someone else on the side. Or to be more accurate, I was the one on the side - I just didn't know it. So yeah, not my greatest moment, and definitely a big regret.

What does Spotify have to do with the Blacklist?

My bad. That was vague and disorganized. I was referring to music league. I haven’t looked into it yet but I think I will.

I signed up and submitted a couple. Could be interesting.

YEAH MAN!! Maybe this needs its own thread.

BTW. I’m Demian on the music league. I used my Facebook to login so it used my real name.

This is really cool. I can’t wait for the voting phase.

I hope I’m not stepping on Ranger Rick’s toes here. I started a Music League thread.

I linked RR’s game and started another one as well.
