Public radio rocks.

You are correct, sir. I anticipate my weekly This American Life podcast almost as much as the GWJ podcast. Almost.

Anything by the band Morphine.

Very much yes. I grew up on Morphine and Tom Waits.

...And Sheryl Crow.

Cool. My former coworker is related to one of the members (brother-in-law). He plays Guitar Hero with Rob Crow and reads his comic collection.

as for me:

Artist: Elliott Smith
Song: Thirteen
Genre: Indie/Acoustic Rock

Why: Elliott Smith rocketed to fame when some of his songs were chosen to appear in Good Will Hunting. One of them (Miss Misery) was nominated for an academy award. He wasn't a big fan of all the hoopla, though.
Smith battled substance abuse and depression his whole life, and his lyrics often reflected his struggles. I first heard him in my senior year of high school and thought his sound was a little "guy in bathroom", but his deeply personal lyrics grew on me.
"Thirteen" isn't one of his better known songs (it's a cover song, in fact), but there's a certain vulnerability and wistfulness that's transmitted by Smith's whispery voice that's really beautiful. It's a very innocent song, and he handles it very delicately: with only his voice and his acoustic guitar to guide the way.

Zombina and the Skeletones
I'd have to say my favorite is Nobody Likes You When You're Dead.

Artist: The Shaggs
Song: My Pal Foot Foot
Genre: ??

For context, which only increases the weirdness: http://www.shaggs.com

Arist: The National
Song: Daughters of the Soho Riots All of it, really.
Genre: quality

It's a little sappy, but man oh man is it good stuff.

Artist: The Drive By Truckers
Song: Decoration Day
Genre: Also quality

This is a slow one, but their hard stuff is where it's at. Their recent stuff isn't the same level of quality, though.

Group: Bond

Explosive: One of their hit songs.

James Holden ft Kirsty Hawkshaw - Fine Day
Elektronica/Trance

I love this song...

I have just learned about the existence of The Smiths.

I think a lot of people know this band by name but here's a song

The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out

I recommend two listens. The first time I paid attention to the lyrics, the second I paid attention to all the small details in the music. Now I absolutely love it

Mmm. The Smiths. Yum.

The Smiths - "Rusholme Ruffians"

Lately I've been listening to the Long Blondes a lot.

The Long Blondes - "Separated by Motorways"
The Long Blondes - "Giddy Stratospheres"

Also the new Ladytron album Velocifero:

Ladytron - "Ghosts"

Of course, everybody's heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from Rock Band, it seems, but "Maps" isn't their best stuff, in my opinion. I get this one stuck in my head too much:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Gold Lion"

And, because a comment elsewhere made me think of it, older stuff: Siouxsie and the Banshees is always good.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Peek-a-boo"
Siouxsie and the Banshees - "The Killing Jar"

And to close the circle:

Morrissey & Siouxsie - "Interlude"

Bumping this because I have Amazon.com Reward credit in my account and need to purchase some tunes. Get recommending, people!

Protest the Hero's "Fortress" came out early last year and was the first CD with any amount screaming/growling (just here and there, not prevalent) that I enjoyed. Overall it really blew me away - a completely new experience for me.

I also checked out Opeth's "Watershed" and while the growling is a bit much for me in parts I overall enjoy the body of work.

Any recommendations that could match the musical power of these groups without having Cookie Monster on lead vocals would be sweet, sweet heaven for me.

Try this one :

Racoon

This song is just one of many good ones.

Also try Ilse de Lange

Nice to know, she used to work in a shoe store and published
her first album and now an upcoming star.

Both Racoon and Ilse de Lange are Dutch. Therefore not that much
known yet in the US and Canada. Songs are in English of course.

That one did cause a bit of a storm when it came it. It's really good.

As always..
Type O Negative-
Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity from the album Slow, Deep, and Hard
In Praise of Bacchus & Love You To Death from the album October Rust

Carnivore's Jesus Hitler from the album Retaliation

JBO's cover of Sepultura's Roots Bloody Roots, from the album Laut

The Fratellis' Flathead

The Airborne Toxic Event's Does This Mean You're Moving On? and Sometime Around Midnight

You're Wondering Now (I'm not going to list the artist because most people won't click the link if they knew. But damn, it is surprisingly good music...)

I love these guys. The whole album is great. Especially Rise Together. Probably my favorite next to Handlebars.

Seconded, as I have a Zune with 50 gigs still open just begging for more sonic goodness.

I'm really liking the Pinback that was suggested. What I've heard so far reminds me for some reason of The Sea and Cake, which is a band I tend to listen to a lot of in the spring. Naussau and Oui are good albums for giving them a listen.

As for my own suggestion, That 1 Guy has some really great stuff, and puts on an amazing show. Highly recommended if he's ever in your area. He's a one man band that has built his own instrument that's played like an upright bass and sings mostly absurd goofy lyrics. And he plays a boot and a saw.

Woa - this guy is unreal! He's apparently going to be in the area in March...I'll try to go and see him.
