Soul Calibur 4 Catch-All

Slight tweak...

Add me to the list of SC4 players on the 360. I forgot I had it at the top of my Gamefly queue until I got the email that it was being shipped out to me. My playtimes are kind of wacky at the moment but hopefully I can pickup Ivy's nuances enough to put up a decent fight online.

You shouldn't have too much trouble. Ivy's nuances have been getting more pronounced with each iteration of the game. In SC4, it's very hard to miss them. In fact, they could be considered her defining attributes.

...

You guys see what I did there?

I'm talking about her boobs.

How very clever of you.

I got the game for PS3 and am installing it now.

Played through Mitsurugi's Story Mode. He's such a badass.

That still sounds so weird to me.

You aren't forced to install this time around. I wanted this though, as the load time gets pretty annoying.

I just watched someone play during lunch, apparently this is the spelling now, at least during a fight. Yay Engrish.

Will Astaroth have one? Because that would almost make it worth picking up.

He can, if you give him one. >_>

Had an online session with some stranger. I don't know about the other reports, but my sessions were smooth enough that I could actually time parries. The two of us were just dicking around and playing with different characters. We (I) stopped at 4:4. It was so much fun.

It showed up on my doorstep today, but I didn't get to play it because I said I'd come in to work early today. 2 hours down, 11.5 to go before I get to go home

Friday is launch day in the UK, so I guess I'll be on the 360 Friday night. My GT is tanaraq.

I'm a Siegfried or Mitsurugi player for the most part. Unlike most, I really want Yoda, hence the 360 pick; I just think that he'll be more interesting to play as, and I have wanted to do so ever since he bounced around like the CGI muppet he is in Attack of the Clones. Vader pretty much has to lumber.

I'm sure that this has been discussed endlessly when announced, but having different characters on different platforms just blows.

BTW anyone know how to unlock the Force Unleashed disciple yet?

Yeah, my brother and I just played about a dozen matches over Live and it might as well have been couch gaming, just without the occasional sweaty thigh contact. I'm impressed!

There are a lot of weird things this time around. Random glowing that I'm not sure what for, SWT wasn't explained (figured out it meant switch, but still weird) etc. On the other hand The Apprentice is effing AWESOME. God I love him. Slamming people about with force powers, using lightning on enemies, overall just being a badass.

My roommate and I are playing with Japanese voice on though. Vader? Yeah, not so badass in Japanese.

PS3, username: bnpederson if anyone cares. Haven't tried the online yet and considering my work is going fullbore you'll probably get my roommate more often than not.

Beat Arcade mode with whichever force user you have.

This would be much easier done if the game would quit locking up on me. I've had 5 lockups so far.

Apparently you're a Segfred player now.

Wow, that's bad. You have the PS3 version, right? Did you try reinstalling?

Nope 360. It's not the box either i spent the rest of the day playing GH without a single problem.

Weird. :/ Maybe it's a bad disc? I haven't heard any reports of wide-spread failures.

Everything about the complaints of ridiculous boobs is correct. Taki's look like they were drawn by a 13 year old with a boob fetish. While I didn't really mind them in DOA they seem completely out of place on SC4.

I tried online matchmaking last night and could never get in. I would get matched up and it would say setting up the match only to say it was full. Then I'd get kicked back to the online menu. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Sigfried, Sophitia, and the final boss are all quite annoying. Taki seems to be at a disadvantage since they all seem to be able (when played by the computer) to take several hits and then break out a combo without any delay at all. I know some of Taki's hits actually leave her at a slight frame disadvantage but this was after about any hit. I was only able to beat the final boss by knocking him off the platform.

Is there a ps3 gwj group like the steam group? I'm evilhomer3k on ps3 network.

So I played for about 2 hours last night. I haven't touched SC in a while, though I spent many countless hours with 1 in college, and 2 a few years ago.

It for sure seems to move a little slower than I remember SC playing. But, it is probably partially that I've forgotten most of the moves, and it is harder to fight fluidly while button mashing. The fun in SC for me was not so much memorizing a characters moves, but in learning the style of button-mashing for a particular player, and then having them do exactly what I want without thinking much about it. I'm looking forward to relearning some of my favorites.

The online portion is great, but could improve in places. The reviews hadn't really mentioned much more about it than that it was there. I was extemely happy with the 4 player winner-stays rotation player-matches. I had trouble getting into ranked matches. Only managed to play two. Hopefully this will work better after the initial launch night rush dies down. I'm not happy about ranked matches kicking you back to the menu when they are through, though I don't really have any better suggestions for it.

Got in a good room, where the host didn't leave after one round finally. Had a great time laughing and taunting with the same three strangers for a a good hour. Watching a nymph with a hool-a-hoop do mortal battle with a triceratops was a riot & Yoda is a Female Doggo to fight.

I had promised myself I wouldn't use Kilik unless needed. But, after someone had won 2 matces by repeatedly using the same move with him, I brought him out. It was a good round, and extremely satisfying to smash someone around somewhat-skillfully with a giant stick.

Winning in general was very vary satisfying. Losing was a great time to grab a smoke/grab some ice cream/check the internets, while watching people flail around for a minute before I was up again.

Hope to see you guys on. I forget, is there a GWJ Fighting clan?

Penny Arcade examines the platform decision that users are being asked to make with SC4.

I played for a bit last night on the PS3. I couldn't really play online because the new system update came out but wouldn't download at more than 3kb a minute. Despite that, my wife got to watch me take Vader through his paces. I am really enjoying this so far. The gameplay is nice and fluid and Vader feels like his moves have some weight to them.
I've had to go back to my alternate button style of having my fingers hover above the buttons rather than having my thumb hit everything. It's taking some adjusting, but I'm getting there.

I look forward to getting the system update downloaded today so I can play some online vs. tonight. Remember, kids, I'm "Sephirotic" on the Playstation Network.

Ars is saying that there is no penalty for quitting a ranked match right before losing. And the winner gets nothing. This seems unacceptable. I wasn't able to get many ranked matches last night. Hopefully this is patched soon. I was looking forward to working my way up (or down) the rankings.

Good God, even after all these years of games with ranked matches, developers are still making these kind of inexcusable rookie mistakes?

Man the Tower can be very frustrating. In the later levels I feel like I am racing against time. It really is a pain in the ass because all they do is block and block. This makes the matches longer and they did not give enough time.

Also, Yoda is cool but I find that I throw myself off the stage a lot with him!

What is Darth Vader's alternate costume? Light grey? Hello Kitty pink?

The character customization basically doesn't work with the extra characters, which is a shame. I was looking forward to dressing up the Apprentice in silly gear to let him have some good stats. You can change the lightsaber to be, um, a lightsaber with different stats. Meh.

You also can't create custom characters with any of the extra character's fighting styles.

Meanwhile the Apprentice has definitely become one of my favorite characters, even knowing he won't be in the next game. He's got some of Taki's evasion, a lot of interrupts, and even some long-range attacks in addition to his quick hits. He fits my play style well.

Yeeeah, that was weird. I'd rather they go with the all-white costume he had in an alternate universe comic I once read, but still... weird.

I've started getting the hang of the customization system. It's kind of what I was afraid of; you basically need to pick your skills and then pick clothing to fit them, and if it ends up looking even remotely good then you lucked out. But if you don't care about the skills it's still got some interesting possibilities in there.

Some of Ivy's combo strings that I learned in the original Soulcalibur seem to be working so I think they might've reverted her back in the direction of her original moveset. Dunno for sure though since as I noted, I'm not hardcore enough to know each and every move of any of the characters.

I've heard there are ways to get around the higher-level Tower enemies that are constantly guard impacting. I think Unblockables still work against them, and the Unblockable skills will occasionally let you do an unblockable normal attack. There are also some attacks with a lot of knockback that can send an enemy skidding backward even if they do block or GI, so you can go for a ring-out.

Just rented it. With each iteration of the series I get the feeling I enjoyed the first Soul Calibur for all the reasons that Namco doesn't care about. Playing this felt like playing a violent Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball. Every pixel of the game seems crafted for a 14 year old boy.

Put in about an hour, glad I rented it.

I finally played the game, although not for very long, yet. I like it. Made a viking.

I was expecting the character creation stuff to be more robust, considering the sh*t that James Mielke at 1up said about it, but I have come to realize that he is a horrible liar. I remember his Resident Evil 4 Wii review that said it had the worst controls of all because you pointed the remote at the screen to aim and then pressed a button to shoot. Oh, but you had to hold another button to bring the gun up in the first place. And, if you wanted to turn to face other enemies, you used the control stick. Two buttons, aiming right at the screen and sometimes pushing a stick left or right a little bit every now and then? Worst, most complicated controls ever!

You suck at life, Milky.

Anyway, I was hoping there would be more customization when it comes to the move-set. I'm hoping more options and things will be unlocked as I go, but as it is right now, whether I'm editing a default character or creating an all-new one, I essentially pick the character I want to play as and then alter his/her look and stats.

Otherwise, I love the feel of the game. Even slower characters feel good, and I usually hate slower characters! My viking is basically Astaroth, who I've never liked, but I wanted to make a viking and Astaroth made the most sense. So, I was fighting Kilik and he exploded my pants off! So now I'm a giant muscley bastard with spikey shoulder things and spikey wrist things and a big Masters of the Universe-style chest-plate thing and a viking helmet and a big cape, and my bottom half has nothing but a tiny little black thong. I laughed, and then I kicked Kilik in the chest. Awesome.

Demiurge, Nimcosi and I spent about two hours playing online. The performance was really good and we had a great time smacking each other around! It was pretty funny just setting it to "Random Female Custom" and seeing what wacky characters popped out.

Desram also tried to play, but he got booted every time we started a match. I think it was a local issue.
