No one will survive.

NSMike, that tarantula did not molt. It launched its escape pod.

For that matter, you could have a lot of fun with an empty human skin.

They don't molt... as willingly.

Just get yourself an Edgar suit.

So, look what I found in the hall this morning:

Close up, it's not quite as scary looking:

The eight year old finally had his birthday party this weekend, and this was one of his presents.

Man, look at those little pointy foot parts. We didn't have those when I was a kid! When they wanted a new structure they'd make do with what was available. They wouldn't craft a whole new plastic mold for one model! D:

There are a lot of custom Lego parts now. It's great for building specialty kits, but not as good for coming up with your own creations, in some ways -- you end up with not enough normal bricks. My favorite set as a kid was my brothers' Lego Castle. Not a lot of specialty parts in that -- you ended up with what seemed like a million little yellow bricks.

When I was 16 or so, I was hanging out in my friends basement when he spotted a big, gross spider. He wanted to smash it, but I was going through my "all living creatures are sacred phase", so I offer to catch and release it. After I got it in the container, it curled up like it was dead, so I left it as such.

A little while later, another, smaller spider was found so I caught it in the same container and walked over to a window to dump it out. As I was walking, the other bigger, dead looking spider attacked the other and BIT IT'S HEAD OFF.

Now I didn't feel right killing bugs, but if one kills another, that's nature. So being the entranced 16 year olds we were, we went about looking for other bugs to pit against the champion. He won every bout, save for one against a mosquito-eater that had more endurance for flight than we had for a fight with no end. We named him Sid, and he was the coolest spider ever.

Here's a video to illustrate the killing prowess of this Arachnid (it's not technically a spider)-

What happened to him (I ask myself so that I can convey this aspect)? A couple of days later we found that the book we kept on top of his enclosure was missing and he was gone. We like to believe that he was to b'dass to be caged and he busted out- In reality my friend's Mom probably had his Dad get rid of him.

I haven't slept soundly in that basement since.

Is the upper-left one a Sackboy Spider?

Please tell me those two bars coming out of the top of its head don't make it playground equipment. Think of the children!

Ayup. Found it here:

50 new species in one area? That is in addition to how many previously known species? Not just spiders, but ones that jump at me? Making Papua New Guinea the most terrifying place on earth.

As an aside, darkroastedblend looks like one of those "random collection of links I like" blogs, but he tends to put some thought into what he posts together. It's generally worth the read.

This can only end well!

Unlike all spiders, this thread must stay alive!

I used to have those spiny-backed orb weavers all over my yard in Austin. It's weird, I had never seen them prior to that house but there'd be dozens of webs with those guys in the yard there.

They look like a Mario enemy. :O

I want a mouse like that so bad.
