All Pro Football 2k8 - Season 4 - Preseason

This is the place to talk about the All Pro Football 2k8 Season 4 season before it starts. Do you want access to the spreadsheet? Who wants into the league? Any rule changes? Time to talk about it while we wait for the playoffs wrap up. Hey, the NBA can have one end of the season wrap around and touch the other, why can't we?

Also last season's spreadsheet is available here and viewable/editable by anyone from the current league.

I agree with letting folks get a game or two into the play-offs before starting this up for real.

Thanks for keeping the spreadsheet around, DS!

I cant access the spreadsheet this time around for some reason

No one has been given access to the season 4 spreadsheet, because I wasn't sure who was in and out. I take it that means you're in?

Yea if you will have me - I would like to come back

Duh, of course. I haven't added anyone yet. I was hoping people would chime in, confirm they were in for Season 4 and I'd start adding them to the spreadsheet.

I'm in!

So I did this just to be easy. I sent an invite to everyone from last season to be a collaborator on the Season 4 draft spreadsheet. If you want to be added and you didn't play last season PM me or post here. This is the text of what I sent..

Hey guys, I'm inviting you as "collaborators" on the All Pro Football 2k8 Draft - Season 4 for GWJ. If you don't want to be in the league this season, feel free not to follow the link or email me and let me know. Otherwise I'm adding everyone from last season and then removing people who don't want to join as that's easier and quicker. Let me know if you have any questions, changes, etc.? And as with last year, this spreadsheet can be an evolving document. Just make sure not to mess around with the players as that data was carefully gathered by (I think) Grumpicus and later put into this spreadsheet. The draft order from last year is still in place only because I don't know who's in Season 4 yet.

Thanks,

Preston

So the gist of this is that I'm using the same document as last year, just copied and the data cleared out. You can still go back and view the old document if you wish. I'm already doing this to see where I made mistakes and where I can remedy them for the next draft. If you want out let me know and I'll remove you.

Are we basing the draft order off of our finishes from seaon 3 or will it be random?

When are you starting a new season and are you taking new players?

maxox -- We'll probably start soon after our play-offs are over. That should be a 3-game affair for the best teams, which may or may not be 3 weeks.

I think we'll have to take a roll-call to see who's in for the next season for sure. We had one earlier that (I think) got us up to 12 teams. You may be among those that push us to 14. Check this thread as we get it going...

My copy of APF just came in the mail today so I'll probably need that much time to get acclimated with the game.

Also how does it work when someone takes a week off? I know I won't be available to play any games between September 4th and 14th. That looks like if I did join I wouldn't be around for all of week 1 or 2.

We usually play a flex schedule, meaning you can technically play any game in your season at any time. So, if you have to be out a week, you pick that week up when you come back.

I sent you a friend request...maybe we can try a game or two sometime. Try playing around with team creation a bit. Personally I recommend going with a gold HB if you're into the running game. Don't worry too much about star offensive linemen, as they seem to be less important to the game than other positions.

I'm sure you'll be able to make it in. We've always been able to pick up someone to round it out or else someone's decided that they wanted a season off only to come back the next season. So, yeah, start playing with the game. If you like it enough and you're not a jerk, we'll have a place for you.

Not sure how we test for jerks, but gamerswithjobs.com tends to sort out jerks from personable folks pretty well.

I mentioned it before in another thread, but I would like to join if there is a slot available.

I know it sounds mean and elitist, but my take always was if you're not an established and known presence on the forums (perhaps an Office Linebacker or so) then try again soon.

I got in as a rookie - hopefully I wasn't to much of a penes.

Yeah, rookies can get in. And you're cool. I think some of us are just trying to avoid GWJ being just another place for people to find a league and then they proceed to act like some of the d-bags we have to put up with in Halo, GTA, etc.

If somebody's first or second post is a request to get in a league then I could see you being wary. If you are not sure about someone why not give them a go in some exhibition games?

Anyway played my first game vs. the CPU this afternoon and I was impressed. I'm going to need to sit down and learn the play books and get a feel for passing, but the gameplay was superior to the cracked out Madden gameplay. I was really impressed with the run blocking.

I love the run blocking. You can actually follow blocks and watch as the play develops. It's fun.

As to being wary, it's just how we are here. Paranoid.

We all strive to game with people who are civil and friendly. So what Prederick or I are saying may sound unwelcoming. Please don't take it that way at all. We just like to make sure that someone didn't just sign up here because he saw a football league forming, but rather he's posted a few times and we can see he/she is a good person, non-cheeser, all that stuff.

Let me know if you want in. PM me your email address if you're interested. Setting up the league now.

What still impresses me most is the passing, in that APF actually has a pocket, and you can't throw across your body from your back foot with Drew Brees and still be laser-accurate. Setting your feet helps. Like in real life.

Ditto. I have become exceptionally jaded by the Internet (i'm still stunned GWJ hasn't had to deal with some serious trolls *knock on wood*) so I distrust pretty much anyone or anything I don't know. It's not you though, it's the Internet. And PubTards.

The pocket is nice too. See, why should I buy Madden again except that everyone is playing it?

Dang it.

Yeah, the pocket in APF is nice. And if it breaks down scrambling out if it feels real. None of this run 20 yards back and fling off your back foot across your body and across the field.

That's exactly the play that started my downfall in my playoff game...trying to do something that wouldn't work in real life didn't work in the game...fancy that!

Well it matters. Steve Young/Randall Cunninham, you might have a chance.

Steve Grogan? Hello Pick Six!

You know what I will say for Madden? You can actually tackle Earl Campbell in it on the first try.

The pocket was something else I was impressed with. After playing so much Madden over the years I was shocked to see an actual pocket. The first time I realized what was going on I just sat there kind of dumbfounded and I took a sack while I watched it collapse into me.

APF isn't perfect by a longshot, and it is does favor the offense pretty heavily (which is the only reason why I can imagine someone calling it "arcade"), but what it does right, it does very, very well. And it does a lot right. It took me a couple days of sitting down and really thinking and watching to get good at passing in it, as well as running. Don't overlook practice mode. It's a huge, huge, huge help to be able to see a Cover 2 at the line, to see your blocks being set-up as you run. You cannot, cannot play Madden like APF and vice versa. You'll kill yourself.

Practice mode was my next step. I probably need to sit down and do this in Madden as well. The delay of game penalties or not being able to call the proper defense in time always stinks. I hate that they totally changed the playbooks in Madden (at least from PC 08 to next-gen 09). I expected to not have a handle on the playbooks in APF.

My first game was a 3-0 win. I threw a pick at the goal line and missed a field goal. I guess I'm going to need to practice and read up on the kicking game in APF as well.

The kicking game can be tricky. If I'm playing in a league, I rarely attempt a >40 yarder unless I have a starred kicker on my team. I've made up to 50 yarders with a no-namer, but I'm not that consistent. Plus, there is enough of a slight delay *sometimes* in the on-line play that the timing can be a bit off when trying to kick.

BTW: It's much better to be early on your kick swing than late. If you're late, you'll almost always miss.1`

I tried jumping back and forth from Madden to APF last night. That was just ugly. I think I'm done with this game for now. Count me out for season 4. If you know anyone who wants to jump in, I'd probably be willing to part with it for a couple bucks plus shipping.

?

Really? Wow. Can we play our game first? Want to just forfeit? Madden is okay, but I personally still have more fun playing APF.
