Advice on 2nd sound card for recording purposes...

Hi all,

I need your help here and hopefully someone will have had a similar experience in the past. Basically i'm wanting to record an audio feed from my microphone - the problem being that when i'm running skype my sound card instantly becomes 'locked' so that no other applications can use it.

So i'm not sure whether the problem is a software issue or if it's that i can't run what i want with the hardware i've got which is a Creative Audigy 2 ZS (i'm running it on win2k). The question i need answered is, if i buy a second sound card do you think that i'll be able to assign the other applications (for recording the audio in from the mic) to that new sound card whilst being able to still use skype for a simultaneous conversation?

If hardware is the answer which card should i get? Do i go for a cheap one as this won't be doing much, or head for a more reliable solution? External USB and PCI cards only i'm afraid.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I don't think it is a hardware thing. But if you want to record skype calls here is a mini-guide that I found, hope it helps.

What are you using as recording software? I am pretty sure that the creative cards will allow you to record two different channels at the same time.

I'm using Audacity... however it applies to any programme - even windows 'sound recorder'. As soon as Skype is started up (chatting that is) then no other programmes can access the hardware. Similarly, if i'm recording in Audacity first, Skype brings up an error telling me that it's unable to access the hardware or something. My PC is down atm so i can't provide the exact message :/

I want to record both the 'overall' sound and the local (my mic sound) separately. I have a hardware setup that can do this using a couple of PCs and a mixing desk... but if the primary PC doesn't allow recording of the overall track then it's going to be a pain! :/
