What old games have you dredged up recently and why?

Jagged Alliance 2 for the 5th time or so. The latest 1.13 patch adds a ton of dynamic challenge to the AI, as well as a zillion or so guns. Still the best game to come out of Canada IMO.

Does Crackdown count? It's a whole year old!! I saw someone else writing about collecting all the agility orbs, and that gave me an itch I had to scratch. I finally finished the driving rank up to get the Master Agent achievement. I've been hunting down orbs and am at 485/500 agility and 190/300 secret...no maps or anything yet, but those last 15 agility orbs are going to be a bear.

The last 15 will be NOTHING compared to the last one. Two weeks to find it for me.

Dude, I just installed it last night! First JA2, then Unfinished Business, which I haven't played yet.

You're really being encouraging here...

Well, if you really want some encouragement, I saw the last one of the 500 off in the distance, started jumping towards it, when I hit a load barrier (the spot in the game where the next island loads up, usually imperceptible) and my DVD drive starts going WHEEEEEERRRRRREEEHHHHHHHH. The system freezes. I can almost feel the little plastic gears grinding themselves down, tooth by tooth, and stare longingly at that little green dot in the distance, on the frozen image on my screen. I call up for a coffin, and have to wait a MONTH for my new 360, and that last orb.

Yikes, you win! or wait, lose!

Fired up Rome: Total War again. What a perfect time sink, and being turn based it is perfect for a bit of time killing at work.

I'm actually giving the Wildfire "mod" a try.

Okay, Wildfire is just... it's just a bad idea. It's like sending soldiers against children. I like some of the stuff they did with it, but the enemy difficulty is just ridiculous, even on the easiest setting. Every single soldier is insanely more skilled than your mercs. Even my best marksmen with a rifle can't hit as often as the enemy soldiers can with pistols at the limit of my guys' sight radius. Hell, enemies even see farther. So it's impossible to sneak up and ambush them on most maps.

Back to plain JA2.

Edit: Actually, there's a user patch called v1.13 for JA2. I'm checking it out now.

You're making me want to re-install Silent Storm and look past the glaring flaws in it.

That's a strong urge to fight. I'm lucky in that while I recognize and acknowledge that its flaws are glaring, I'm easily able to look past them.

well I went into breath of fire 2. Decided to replay the old snes classic. Not really as great as I remembered it but still fun

Man, the first half of Silent Storm was so goddamn good, and then they went off the rails with those stupid Panzerkleins. Argh.

I would like to dredge up the Freedom Force games, I wish they were released on Steam or some other digital service. Who owns the rights to them now that Irrational was bought by 2k? They don't appear on 2k's website. SWAT 4 would be another great game to get digitally from Irrational.

I was going to warn you... Stay far away

JA 2 with the 1.13 patch is like a new game. More control over your militia, far more weapons (far far far more) a new inventory system, and various AI fixes. It's tougher without feeling rediculous like wildfire did. Deidrianna Lives! is the best user mod out there currently... Far superior to Wildfire.

I believe Freedom Force was published by EA, that's why it isn't on Steam. My copy of FF is on EA's Sold Out label (FF vs 3R is by some Digital Jesters here in Europe) and as I was checking, at least the US budget version is by EA as well. Still, it's not that difficult to get your hands on copy of both for cheap, eBay is full of them.

I figured I could do that, I'm trying to buy all my stuff digitally now. I didn't realize EA had it though, I might have to buy the disks now.

Get ready for a deluge of "Diablo 2" posts...

hehe, just restarted Diablo 2 again...for some mysterious reason...can't think why

I take it there was never any sort of "Baldurs Gate style" high resolution mod or anything though?
The low resolution is painful.

How about... Diablo.... 1...

Thats right. Kickin it super old school.

Did you download the patches from Blizzard. I believe they had a patch that allowed you to increase the resolution to a more appropriate level. (Though still not as high as some would like.)

Well, I needed to pick some things up at Target this evening and... Well, wouldn't you know! The Diablo battle chest. Yoink!

Jagged Alliance 2 over the years for me. There are still mods and campaigns being made for the game even now.

Xwing vs Tie Fighter if I still had a stick. Its just not the same playing those games with a mouse.

Other than that I'm currently playing old games I never got to back in the day, i.e. GBA games right now and before I got the DS I was playing the Fear Effect games and Nuclear Strike which I missed during the PS1 era.

Ever play Another World? Damn fine piece of software right there. It's really the only thing I can think of to add to the growing list.

I've been rummaging through my old GameCube games. Some MegaMan, Quidditch World Cup and Tales of Symphonia.

I'll give it a shot after JA2 1.13 is done. The inventory changes especially take some getting used to.

I seem to play a lot of games at once, jumping between them all as I find the urge.

* What I'm currently playing (older games)
Diablo II (just installed today due to the DIII's announcement)
Freedom Force
Freedom Force versus the 3rd Reich (I absolutely love the FF games)

* What I would like to go back and play
Titan Quest + expansion (never did finish the first one)
Warcraft III + Frozen Throne (just to see the campaigns once again)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (does this count as an old game? Man it's fun)
Medieval Total War 2

I don't know how long I can stay with Diablo II though. Man those graphics are just horrid. The gameplay seems to be pretty solid. I never actually played through it when it first came out....

Diablo II - graphics are dated but I can already feel that game sucking me in.

Titan Quest + expansion (never did finish the first one)

Oh, good point - still have that installed, better get through that before D3 otherwise I'll NEVER get back to it. Not even out of Greece at the moment.

Really? I'm fully patched up but didn't see anything - I'll have to run through the patch notes just in case...

Chrono Cross. I recently hacked my PSP (thanks again to *Legion* and his sterling work) and managed to get the PS1 emulation working. I dug out a few RPGs, and created eboots for them, but CC was the only one that would fit on my memory stick without erasing other stuff. I was just checking that ther emu worked, but I am now totally sucked into the game. MGS4, Super Smash Bros (which FINALLY released in Europe this week) and Ninja Gaiden 2 are going unplayed.
