Car lovers?

Pages

Since we're all gamers I figure we all have other toys as well. How many car lovers do we have? I don't care if your car costs $2k or $200k, if you love it, talk about it.

*This thread is not for those that see these machines purely as a means to get from A to B.

Last month I traded in my Subaru WRX - I was sad to see her go (2004, never had a maintence problem in her life) but with my long commute I need to change it up every now and again. My new lover is a 2005 SLK 350, fully loaded to include the AMG package with paddle shifters & wheels (but it is not a true AMG, I'm not rich!). Certified pre-owned with only 15k on it. I wake up in the morning excited to go to work, seriously, because I get to drive my car. Now that's love!

IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Shoal07/img_0014.jpg)

Mmmm SLK has surely come a long way from the original! You even went for Arrest Me Red, brave!

Back in '99 when I was a young 24 yr old punk, I was doing consulting work and did a lot of traveling so I decided to find something without a lid. I looked briefly at the original SLK, but it was gutless and had a cramped plastic interior. Eventually I took a spin up to Toronto one day, parked at the Yorktown mall and took the subway downtown. Walked in off the street to Downtown Fine Cars and ordered a new Boxster.

It was silver, blue leather (not as odd as you'd think) with thousands of dollars in aluminum trim interior doodads. I think it was $1400 just to get the damned parking brake and shift knob in aluminum. That was actually a bad idea since if you parked it with the lid down the metal would be too hot to touch. Had to grip the stick by the shaft... dirty. Anyway Porsche is the master of expensive options and I think the stupid thing had $20K in options.

I was feeling a little faint on the way home afterwards, but hell you only live once right?

A few months later I got The Phone Call that my new toy had arrived and would be ready for pickup in the next day or two. I'd never been more excited in my life and time dragged like you wouldn't believe until finally Saturday came around and I made another trip up to Toronto.

Oh did I mention I didn't know how to drive stick when I bought it? Luckily a friend got me semi competent and I managed to get the damn thing off the lot without stalling it. The clutch pedal has about 2mm of travel between disengaged and fully engaged and boy did I suck for quite some time. You really feel like a tard when you're sitting at a stop light and stall a Porsche.

At the time, the Boxster had only been out for 2yrs and in London (~300K people) I rarely saw another one. Most people had no idea what it even was.

I had a lot of fun with that little thing and it was surprising on the mileage. I often averaged >30mpg with a 80/20 split between highway and city driving. It made this amazing spine tingling exhaust noise when the engine passed through the 6500 rpm range. I heard that noise a lot and made pretty good friends with the rev limiter.

On the 3rd year, it started wearing thin - yes, while it had never occurred to me before, it was in fact possible to get tired of driving a Porsche. Being highly conspicuous was no longer entertaining. Parking in public lead to paranoia - front fascia was keyed once. Driving around in jeans, an old T-shirt and scruff felt out of place. Having the lid up on a hot summer day instead of baking my ass would get me sooo many strange looks "why doesn't he have the top down?!? ZOMG!" - how about because I'm sweating my balls off!? Plus averaging $2K/yr in maintenance and having to have a 2nd car for the winter was getting a little old.

Eventually in Feb 03 I replaced it with an Infiniti FX45 with the High Tech package. It's my first V8 and boy is that torque addicting! The FX with stock 20" tires (AKA pontoons) absolutely sucks in the snow, but with snow tires it's fine. It's the only vehicle I've kept for more then 3 or 4 years. Basically there's nothing it does that annoys me and the Boxster did a fine job of curing my sports car lust. Although some days, buying a used $40K Boxster just for the hell of it is rather tempting... doh!

Yeah, I'm a car lover: my screen name partially comes from my 1992 Nissan 240sx that I love to death. Lightweight, well-handling, rear-wheel drive, and stick-shift is the only way to drive (except in the rain). I hope I can keep it alive until I get a garage and can "restore" it so it doesn't show its 200k miles quite as much and then take it autocrossing. My current car-lust (which changes often) is focused on the last-generation Mazdaspeed Miata for the same reasons as above + convertible.

Right now.. there's about a hundred cars I'd love to drive.

As it is I'm not high on the income scale so I had to get my (now seemingly rinky-dink) little Focus SVT. I'll post a picture of it sometime when I can remember the login for my photobucket account. It's eluding me at the moment.

I dream of owning a lot of different cars, some of which really aren't really unapproachable, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to bring myself to get another car payment again. This one has been torture.

There a was GWJ Car Post a few years back. Just found it.

I was looking to replace my 98 Ford Escort last year. I looked at leasing a 2007 Dodge Charger that was fairly reasonable. I love those cars.

Still, I'm not big on the lease concept because of how long we tend to keep cars. While I loved the Charger and it was affordable for my income bracket, it was cheaper, and more responsible, to get a 2006 Suzuki Forenza. That has been a surprisingly good car. I didn't really want another manual transmission, but after driving it for awhile I realize that going automatic would feel weird to me.

I think once we get some debts paid off, I'm now looking at the Mazda RX-8. I want a sports car but something not ungodly expensive. I need something I won't feel bad about having and because I have two kids it has to have some kind of back seat. No two seat roadsters for me! I also really dig the new Lancers, but they just strike me as too low end. I also kind of like the Tiburon, but feel like the Mazda would have better long term reliability despite the extra cost. Plus the Lancers and Tiburon seem popular with a demographic that's a bit younger than me.

Hey my wifes Grand-father has one of the CLK AMG Black Editions and one night while drinking too much wine he actually let me take it for a spin, needless to say I was doing 100+ down PCH in like a block! It was CRAZY fast, I told him that if I drank about 1 more glass of wine before we left his house He would ended face down in a ditch and the car would have been in my garage.

I also had this funny as Plymouth Sundance 2 door turbo that was a complete sleeper, the best part about the car is it started out its life a "dusty rose" red, but with the sun it turned a light pink. I remember pulling up to lights and blowing the doors off CRX's and the likes and then at the next light rolling down the windows and yelling "YOU GOT BEAT BY A PINK CAR!!!"

I got a 01 PT Cruiser now and while it is no performance demon its very good at cruising around and I enjoy taking long trips in it and I have had no issues with it so far. Only major service that I have had done to it was the 100k tune up crap fest.

My current dream car.. dodge Challenger SRT8... I get hard just thinking of all the tires that would die horrible deaths if I got my hands on that car...

Spaz.. what you need to do is vacation in Hawaii! They rent these cars to drive around in by the day! I almost took out the newest viper for spin on my honeymoon, but then I found out my wife had purchased a new pair of shoes.

I also seen a simliar setup here in Houston but just not as big a selection as Hawaii. Maybe you got something similar in your town.

96 Standard 4-banger Jeep wrangler for the win!!

I'm in the same boat -- I'd love to have something sporty and quick (the RX-8 just sounds like sex on wheels when it revs up, though I wouldn't knock back an M3 or S4), but practicality dictates something a bit more modest, so we recently bought a baby car, the Mazda 2:

IMAGE(http://chrome.linuxgamers.net/~lsd/car.jpg)

It's perhaps not a terribly exciting car, but it's the first brand-new car I've owned, so it was pretty exciting for me when I drove it off the lot, and it's still a fun car to drive. It's definitely given me a taste for smaller cars, so I could see myself in a hot hatch like the turbo Focus in the future.

That's kind of a sweet little subcompact!

I love cars, but it's one of those hobbies I've decided I can't afford. I love my car, a 2003 Acura RSX Type-S, but my wife drives it most of the time, and I have my 2000 Jeep Wrangler. I like the Jeep, but I've got a longer commute now that I've moved to a new job, and given it's deplorable gas mileage for a vehicle of its size, it's time to put it back in the stable. While I'd love to get an M3, IS 350, or Elise, I'd like to get something more affordable with some cargo space that gets decent gas mileage and has decent highway manners. I'm looking at the Honda Element, Hyundai Tuscon and Toyota Highlander right now.

I'm going back and forth over whether to give up the idea of an SUV to go for a little hatchback, being that it's primary use will be for commuting. Or, to see if I can convince my wife to let me have the RSX back, and allow her to pick out a new car.

I've got/had cars that would demonstrate reasonable car lover cred.

The romance wears off.

I'd trade all the fat tires, thumpy suspensions, and vroom-vroom in the world for a car that could drive itself autonomously. The future can't come soon enough.

I'd love an RX-8 for almost exactly the same reasons (although no kids yet!). I've always wanted an RX-7 FD3S, but I know that they're completely impractical. I almost get the impression that the RX-8 was a result of the folks at Mazda saying "well, the RX-7 was awesome, but let's make a car based on a similar principle that more people will buy".

By "low-end", I assume you're talking about luxury/class rather than speed? Or were you meaning the lower-spec lancers rather than the Evos?

The non-Evos. I think the Evos are sweet, but for that kind of money I could just get a nicer car.

The real issue I have with cars in general is that I have a hard time pumping too much money into a low end car before I realize I could just get something bigger and nicer for the same kind of money. I know people who have upgraded the crap out of a Ford Focus but they got the car originally because it was "cheap". Mad props to Ford, if you can build a $50,000 Focus (not saying it's possible that I know of) they'll gladly sell you the options packages. I got nothing but flak from Toyota when I tried to get a car with the options I wanted on it. Silly of me.

The funny thing about the Lancer is that I hated them for the longest time. They were just this low end sports car with 4 doors! What kind of insanity is that? Then the latest models came out (2007?) and when I saw the commercial I thought someone had pinched the design for the Skyline and realized it was the new Lancer! How dare Mitsubishi make me like that car! Dirty rotten bastards!

Anyway, I do love the Charger, but I have been burned by one American manufacturer after another. I get really tired of these Honda and Toyota owners complaining about their cars going to pot at 150 and 200k when I can barely milk 90k out of my American car. I had a Pontiac Grand Am just fall to pieces as 60k. Regular oil changes, regular maintenance, and the smug jerk who clearly neglects his Civic has been driving it for 10 years without a problem. We replaced our two Fords this year with a Kia and a Suzuki. Not only is it the first time I have owned a foreign car, but now none of our cars are domestic. It saddens me, but I think US car makers really need to earn my trust back at this point. I can't "Buy American" if they're going to screw over the people supporting their business.

I'm a big car fan, and I've seen pretty much every episode of Top Gear. As a kid I was really into European supercars, then in high school I got into the modified import scene, but now I'm more into sophisticated and practical sports cars. I'm thinking about getting a Lancer Evolution X, but if money were no object I'd get a Nissan GTR.

It's in the blood. My brother works here. You can safely assume he loves it.

I do like those little SLKs, more for my wife than me, but I bet it is a fun car to drive! I don't think he has to worry about speeding too much if he's commuting in Laurel, MD.

I drive a 2006 TL, compromise car between a nice sedan and decent performance. My wife and I actually share a car so had to get something we could both live with. I would love to get a 2009-10 Elise to add a second 'fun' car though. I have wanted one since they came to the US and they are just getting better with the 09 redesign.

I've never wanted to visit Florida before. Not even for DisneyWorld.
You've changed that today, buddy.

That looks like a nice place to have a part-time job on the weekends or something. But how does one get so close to those cars for any amount of time and not go crazy with longing?

First off, that's a damned shiny beauty, Shoal.

I used to be strictly utilitarian. A car gets you around, so it should be economic and plain.

Yeah, I was a bit of a moron.

It wasn't until my girlfriend introduced me to this baby that I started seeing automobiles as sexy, sexy pieces of machinery. I think it's the fairy-lights. The Camaro in Transformers also piqued my interest. Then I got Forza 2 and was amazed at how the risque initial swoosh of the car's body, followed by the full monty, could get me excited about the car models.

I VoD'd a few episodes of BBC's "Top Gear" and I was hooked. Also, amazed. They talked about cars with the same giddy effervescent attitude that I approached games with.

I'm driving an '07 Saturn Ion right now. Pretty plain, so I put a Decepticon decal on the hood. Makes a nice pair with the scooter I own that sports an Autobot decal. If I had to choose a car to upgrade to, it'd be the Audi TT hardtop. Of course I'd have to hit the lottery first, or talk myself into a sweet, sweet job to do so.

I'd like to drive the R8 before I die, though. Maybe not own one, but drive one. Aside from the R8, I have a technical fascination with the Bugatti Veyron. I'd do terrible things to get a chance to drive either of them.

Spaz wrote:

This should be a thread all on it's own. For me that car would be the new Nissan GT-R.

pneuman wrote:

Good luck with that. They only ever make them for Europe. The highest powered focus they've made so far here was the SVT from '02 to '04 at a mere 170 horsepower. It's fun to drive, but could use another 50 horsepower or so. At that point you could turn in better track times on a lot of autocross courses than far more expensive cars.

Why Ford continues to build all their best cars in Europe and Australia I'll never understand.

MikeMac wrote:

I can only imagine... kinda funny though... That FX45 is also a sweet ride and while not a pure sports car (damn close really), it's 300 something horses still make it a seriously fun drive.

My wife's car is a 2007 Infinit G35x (yes, I picked that one out too). The Miata is a F U N car to drive. For the price, there is no better roadster on the road, not even close, and you have to spend atleast $10k more to get a comparable car. Mazda has got a really well designed roadster, and the SPEED version of anything is amazing.

Chager = very nice car. From friends that have one, get the AWD version - the HP + RWD = sucks if you live anywhere that gets snow. As soon as I saw your post about the RX-8 I was going to say "get a miata". I've driven both, hard, at Mazda events, and the Miata is, hands down, a more fun car to drive. Don't get me wrong, an RX-8 is pure joy as well (and I like the recent cosmetic upgrades) so you'll enjoy either. Too bad you have to cart kids around

Ok, if your girlfried has an Audi R8, wanna trade (women)? Next, I too would love to even be close to a Veyron, but I think that comes with a $50k deposit... I have a great video somewhere, It's on my iPhone so I have to figure out how to move it.

I've never heard of the Mazda2 - I don't think they sell it in the states. Since it's a Mazda, you might be able to dig up a turbo from a wreked Mazada Speed and see how that does it for you. They're very small sized turbos in the Mazda and I bet you could make it fit, if you were willing to spend the time. Don't forget the intercooler!

Very true. Lots of sports cars in my past, but now I am waiting for the caddy DTS to drive itself, then I'm in! As I get older I am reminded of what Samuel Goldwyn once told the actor James Dean, "No sports cars!"

This thread is just the fix I need right now. I'm going nuts waiting to pick up my new car tomorrow. I actually don't mind, I love doing stuff with da'boys. They like to hop in my car because they always ride with mom. I could get a two seat roadster if I wanted to, but then it wouldn't be as much fun for them.

1st my daily driver
Bought it at CarMax while shopping for a truck Found this in 05. It was a 02 with 3k miles. It was sold at a government auction it had sat in a Dallas TX evidence warehouse for 3 years. I got it real cheap.

I have kept it stock for the most part. Minor Intake, stripped the exhaust and an aggressive tune.

I swore that I would only toss in a K&N and a cat back and that would be it. That lasted about 2 months when I made my first trip to test and tune at Route 66 in Joliet, that night the bug bite me hard. It’s been a fun, yet aggravating experience ever sense.

I see what you mean -- until I checked Wikipedia a minute ago, I'd just assumed all the current Focus models were sold everywhere these days, so I was really surprised to see that America misses out on them. We do get a 166kW (225HP) turbo Focus, which I think is called the Focus ST in Europe, though Down Under it's the XR5. I wish they'd export the Falcon to the States, too -- I'm sure a few muscle car fans would love to get their hands on an affordable 310kW (415HP) sports sedan, and Ford Australia could probably use the business.

I love to work on those WRX's
A buddy just bought a Saabaru for about 7 grand and and a long weekend we are going to have that thing screeming.

Oh yeah I installed a lift in my garge at home to make life easier... The wife LOVES it.

I love my Jeep Cherokee, even though it gets lousy mileage and it's slowly falling apart. Kind of to be expected at 238,000 miles though.

A pox on Chrysler/Jeep for abandoning the true Cherokee for all those abominations it's putting out now.
